Kill The Fan Rage, Give DMC The Benefit Of The Doubt

Hey, we all know what it's like to see a favorite franchise flounder. It's just painful.

But as far as I can tell, there's absolutely zero basis for all the fan rage flying around concerning Ninja Theory's new project, the Devil May Cry reboot, also known simply as "DMC." There are just so many problems with this irrational backlash.

First of all, this is not a series in trouble. DMC4 was awesome, although the hardcore will say DMC3 remains the best. Secondly, why does everyone keep forgetting that Capcom has had the final say in all sorts of creative decisions? Both sides have made it plain that this is a combined effort; Ninja Theory has even said that if you have a problem with Dante's new look, talk to Capcom, 'cuz they approved it. Thirdly and lastly, I really don't see the evidence that says Ninja Theory is going to stray from a winning formula and annoy the long-time fans.

If you missed out, here's over three minutes of gameplay footage. I don't see a problem, do you? They've since released more gameplay videos and although I could nitpick and complain about a few things, this does appear to be vintage Dante. It's fast, furious, and presumably, the combat depth, flexibility, and diversity is there. I suppose if I were to worry, I'd be concerned about the latter category, because Ninja Theory has made Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West...both great games, but not especially deep in terms of combat.

Still, we're talking about a talented developer. On top of which, we're talking about a talented team that has had experience in this very genre. Death threats? Really? You've got to be kidding. I'm not saying DMC will be a guaranteed winner; I'm saying we probably shouldn't freak out until there's something to freak out about. Remember, I was one of many who out-and-out despised Dante's new design. And I still do. But one fact has always remained, and it goes double for this franchise- the gameplay reigns supreme. Make it unbelievable, and the fans will be satisfied.

Ninja Theory doesn't deserve the nerd rage, people. There are other game makers who do, so save your strength for them.

I look forward to trying this despite it's dreary makeover. Now if I had to choose between this and this here tasty bag of yogurt covered raisins. Sorry, I'm going to have to stick to my yogurt covered raisins.

Bravo! I think those that hate it will get it and play it on another psn account so no one ever know they actually like it. I don't get the hate either.. I like NT and I want to see where they take DMC.

Based off the demo, Asuras Wrath was complete garbage imo. If DMC is anything like that, i wont bother.

I'm buying it when it comes out. The game looks awesome and Ninja Theory hasn't made a bad game yet. Well Kung Fu Chaos wasn't that great but the last 2 games were awesome in my opinion.

The main thing that bothers me is dumping the story from the first 4 games. At least tie it in somehow.

If the gameplay still retains that DMC feel (of which so far it's looking like) then I'm definitely going to play it, but I've been excited about where the story of the DMC series is going after the 4th game for awhile, only to find out it's meaningless in this new iteration.

I remember awhile back the lead designer said he was designing the new Dante with what he was like as a teenager. Uh-huh. So you were an emo angsty looking smoker? Well then, Mr. emo angsty looking smoker, you had better surprise the world with how these changes makes the series better.

With great remakes like Mortal Kombat, the new Lara Croft game looks great as well, remakes aren't really such a bad thing. But we can't blame the developers for trying to re-hash DMC. It faltered quite a bit the way it was...

It's all good for me, DMC NEEDS a good storytelling dev on its side and I like this new kid. Dante isn't emo, he is genuinely disturbed.

BTW, I only watched the first episode of the Devil May Cry anime and it was kinda blah, does anybody know if it gets any better?

There is only backlash because of Dante's redesign. Making him look like a character from twilight will only garner backlash amongst everyone except women and girls ages 13+ that likes twilight.

I agree though that as long as the game play remains unchanged or is better we should not complain.

It's not hate or rage I feel towards the DMC reboot. It's more like a feeling of apathy. Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure most DMC fans would rate DMC4 just above DMC2 which isn't saying a whole lot.

This isn't the only game copping sh!t from the masses. Anyone seen the latest uproar on SCV & it's Alpha Patroklos & Omega Pyyrha? Alot of people are sayng the Namco devs are being lazy by giving Setsukas moveset to Pat & wasting a character slot due to rushing the title out.

It's crazy i tells you.

On DmC, if the game ends up bombing, then NT will cop it & deservedly so. But lets atleast wait until the game is out & the fans have played it before we shed our E-tears & write up death threats like it will mean something.

As a DMC fan, i hope Ninja Theory can pull it off. I'd love a new quality Devil May Cry. Fingers are crossed.

The game on it's on would not be bad, if it had no ties to Devil May Cry, heck it would be considered interesting. However the fact that it is a reboot is the sore problem.

As you said, the series was not in trouble at all. DMC4 while a better than average game, still managed to hold up the series (Unlike Resistance 3 - heavily disappointed with that.) There is no reason to not have a DMC5, DMC4's ending left it in such a position I was really looking forward to a DMC5.

The point is there is not need for DMC to be rebooted and now it has done, the series is left incomplete aka redundant.

And as for the actual reboot, I hate the art direction. I do not like the urban design at all. Heck, the DMC series is no stranger to cities, just look at DMC3's brilliant first few stages. But the art direction was just better somehow. This new Dante just looks like an emo street punk and if I cannot connect with a character the game is lost.

I have nothing against Ninja Theory, I really enjoyed Enslaved and I can at least respect Heavenly Sword. But I just cannot support this project. I feel the same with Christopher Nolan and Batman, Inception proved he is capable of so much more, so i will be waiting to see what he'll be doing next instead, same iwth Ninja Theory.

I was nt too happy about the change of look but after a while i did nt mind it at all .

Especially once i saw the combat , all i m hoping for is that they make the combat a little faster and the enemies obviously have to be more active .
Now that i think about it , all they have to do is make the enemies more aggressive since it will surely make the combat faster you won t have all day to combo an enemy .

As is the case for most games, it's probably better to wait until a game releases to pass judgement.

This whole gen, I've had experiences where I've either expected awesome or terribleness from games, only for them to release and turn out to be quite the opposite.

Sometimes you can predict how good or bad a game will be before it comes out, but it happens enough where you can't to cause me to be patient for a release before passing judgement.

The look probably isn't enough to make a game bad, though. Although, if they cut Cloud's or Squalls hair and changed it's color, I'd probably be pissed too.

I couldn't agree with you more Ben. People need to give this game a chance and focus their "fanboyism" somewhere else. Dont get me wrong I'll be the first to admit that I liked the way Dante has always looked...hell I like most of the heroes that come out of Japan, ie. Cloud, Tidus, Chris, Leon, Squall, Ryu and so on and so forth. And I can say I wasn't sold on the new looking Dante that both studios came to the decision on but I'm still willing to give the game a try because its by two studios that have proven themselves.

From the videos I've seen when Dante powers up his hair goes completely white so whats to say that he wont turn into the Dante we all know and love in later games if this one does well. The gameplay and artistic feel also looks great so I say give it a chance people.

It's not the change of Dante that irks me. It's the fact DMC didn't need a reboot. I had tons of fun with DMC 4 and couldn't wait for DMC 5 to see the connection between Nero and Dante. Now..it doesn't even matter nor was that a proper closing to the DMC series.

I'm still going to play this reboot. The gameplay looks good. Just hope the story makes enough sense..Bottom line this better be a hell of a game if they felt DMC needed a reboot.

As others said, it's not that they changed Dante's look. It's everything else. So far, very little has sounded appealing about this game.

Unreal Engine 3, 30fps, slow and sluggish combat, disappointing music choice, etc. Just seems meh so far.

Devil May Cry is known for fast-paced action. Ninja Theory said they want to rival Platinum Games' 'Bayonetta' but so far the gameplay seems to rival 'Dante's Inferno'. It's decent but nothing amazing.

Basically, I'm not raging anymore. I stopped a while ago after the announcement two years ago. Now I just plan to wait and see. Maybe I'll rent it someday.

The only thing we've seen changed is his aesthetic look. Gameplay trailers show the gameplay is very much the same, along with the themes. There doesn't seem like there's much "turning on it's head".

the gameplay is slowed down as well underdog. 60fps down to 30fps due to it switching over to the unreal engine. Kinda makes a rather large difference for those who are use to playing the other 4 dmc games
