Capcom: "Makes Sense" For Resident Evil To Have More Action
When Capcom announced Resident Evil 6, they provided anticipatory gamers with a debut trailer that clocked in at over three minutes.
We saw a lot in those three minutes, but the RE faithful seem to be split: one side says the developer is returning to their roots by giving us a true-blue survival/horror game, and this theory was reinforced when Capcom said one of the key concepts of RE6 was "the fear that lies ahead." The implications are obvious, right? Besides, we're already getting the action-oriented Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City from SOCOM developer Slant Six, so Capcom would give us a traditional horror experience with RE6. Yes?
Well...maybe not. The other half of the RE faithful saw way too much action in that trailer, and recent comments from the publisher haven't been encouraging. According to MCV, Capcom UK head of marketing, Dave Turner, said it only "makes sense" for them to "more fully" explore the action element with the RE franchise. And why? Because RE5 had the most action of any entry in the series, and it turned out to be the biggest seller in franchise history. Oh, and one more thing:
"The dream would be that the millions of Call of Duty fans that are enjoying these fast-paced online games are attracted to this Resident Evil."
No. Not again. Please. Another Japanese company mentions Call of Duty and tries to turn a beloved franchise into something it shouldn't be...? Perhaps we shouldn't be too negative; that trailer did seem plenty bad-ass, and maybe it'll be an engaging mix of survival/horror and third-person action. We're allowed to be optimistic, right?

I'm not saying RE5 was a terrible game but I do think it was a bad Resident Evil game for the most part. RE4 had plenty of action but it at least got the atmosphere and setting right. It started off in a desolate woods which led to that creepy village. It was daylight but it still managed to deliver some genuine Resident Evil tension and atmoshpere.
What did I not like about RE5? Where do I start? I pretty much disliked allmost everything about it. The atmosphere, the setting, the ROIDED up Chris Redfield, the medicore boss fights, the poorly implemented cover system, enemy design, and finally the co-op dynamic. Too much action and not enough horror, It played more like a bad Gears of War clone. I think the co-op dynamic really hurt RE5 as a survival horror game.
Anyways, I'm going to ignore the marketing spokesperson and concentrate on "the fear that lies ahead" concept that Capcom talked about at their RE anniversary event.

Yes RE5 was the best selling blah, blah. Many of those sales were hype sales. RE5 damaged the franchise because it was too centered on action and because it lost all atmosphere and tension the Resident Evil series has been known for. If Capcom gives us another RE5 type game they might as well kiss the Resident Evil fanbase goodbye. They will end up with neither the COD crowd or traditional RE fans imho.
Having said all this...it's just some tool from the UK marketing team that is speaking here. I'd be far more concerned if this was coming from the Japanese game designers themselves. I want to know what they are saying.

The whole Call of Duty movement is for the casual gamers...unless RE goes completely online mindless multiplayer shooter they will never reach Call of Duty status...

Though I can sorta see why adding more action to the next installment, 6, can be a good thing but not for the reason of winning over COD fans (myself having played them). I mean the entire plot of the series itself has sort of been escalating as the whole Resident Evil Universe gets closer to a world ravaged by Bio-terrorism. I personally think it would be hard to demonstrate that sort of level of chaos depicted in the trailer (the President dead, attacks in what seems to be a possibe chinese metropolis) through the previous system of gameplay that was given.
Regardless, I'm just glad to see they haven't forgotten their older characters (Sherry Burkin is apparently the blonde woman, not Ashley) and I hope they explain just what happened to Rebecca & Billy after the Raccoon City Incident.

What this means, though, is that (like KZ3 and SOCOM 4 did) Capcom will throw out it's traditional fans in a misguided attempt to try and grab a slice of the CoD pie. I can understand Guerilla and Zipper making these mistakes, but after the failure of so many CoD-wannabes in the last year, surely someone would start to wise up.....

If only the competitors tried making something *else* with equal social potential they got a much better chance at succeeding.
Just look at Wordfeud! Who could have seen that one coming? "Everybody" are playing that now. Some fools are probably going to try to make a wordfeud clone but they will fail.

I'm giving this a fair chance and I'm the one who got a refund on RE5 the next day! I just played RE3:Nemesis and was reminded of how much better classic RE is.

They never stop to think that maybe one of their unique games will explode like Call of Duty did. I think CoD was just in the right place at the right time, as there are far superior shooters, and action games out there that don't get the attention they deserve. Plus I think the next generation of gamers and humans in general want everything to come easy. Give a teenager super gouls and ghosts, or even the original super mario world and I bet most would stop playing because either its too hard, or they aren't leveling up some aspect of their character.
Where have the days of leveling up our personal skills gone? Playing a shooter online and dying until YOU learn how to adapt and get better. Its called practice and I think people don't want that in their games anymore :(
Its why rayman origins is my favourite game of last year. The later levels were insane fun and very challenging especially the speed runs and collections. I think CoD will die but only when people keep making what THEY love and like to play...just look at Mine crafts success. Who would have thought that game with those graphics would be so successful? End rant.

For the love any god that's ever been prayed to, will that series please burn in hell already. So the games sell like crazy, I don't friggin care. If I wanted to play a game like COD, I'D GO OUT AND BUY A DAMN COD. WHY DOES EVERY JAPANESE DEV SUDDENLY WANT TO CATER TO THE SAME MARKET? I don't want a mindless, super fast-paced zombie game calling itself resident evil, I just want RE. I miss the good old days when hearing about a japanese dev made me think "this should be good" and not "oh PLEASE don't mention COD". This is driving me crazy...

Even with this stupid comment this spokesperson made, I'm willing to give Capcom the benefit of the doubt for now. That trailer was impressive, and I've wanted to buy another RE for a long long time now.
