Kojima On Rising: "I Thought Nothing Good Would Come Of This"

The transition and rebirth of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (originally dubbed "Metal Gear Solid: Rising") is well known, but here's another interesting tidbit:

According to a recent CNN interview, franchise creator Hideo Kojima said he actually canceled the project at one point in time.

"I canceled it. I made the decision. I just thought that nothing good would come out of this."

Kojima Productions shelved the project and turned their attention elsewhere, primarily because the younger team Kojima had assigned to the game just wasn't up to the challenge. "It was almost lost when they were making it," added Kojima. And it wasn't because of a lack of talent; it was simply due to a lack of expertise in the action genre. When the project was on hold, Kojima and Co. worked on the high-definition remakes of older titles, which eventually became the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, an absolute must for long-time followers.

Lastly, Kojima had this to say about Revengeance:

"If this game becomes hugely successful and popular, then we might make it into a franchise."

And what do the fans have to say about that?

And people hating on this because they wanted Kojima to make it at all cost xD, the man know the limits of he can do and that's great, MGS5 sure gonna be stealth after reading this.

MS should feel trolled after make Kojima announce this game like if was his next big project coming to the 360.

I had some interset in Rising at first mainly because I thought Raiden's backstory had some potential. I thought we were supposed to witness the events that turned Raiden into a cyborg ninja, Maybe they can still do this with flashbacks. I do admit I liked the original stealth/hunter concept more but I'm going to try to keep an open mind.

Not many will admit they dont have what it takes to complete a project. Im happy Kojima passed it on to Platinum.

Of corse it will sell because it has "metal gear solid". Of course they will make a sequel.

Well, gotta love the honesty and solves the puzzle why little was said about it since it's announcement. I hope Platinum delivers. Another title another wait and see approach for me.

I can't help thinking it was announced too early in order to give Microsoft their shock announcement at E3. It just raised its profile too quickly when it was in an embryonic stage.

I think that is a given. Microsoft was going for that Final Fantasy shocker.

I enjoyed Vanquish and MGS is my favourite series of all time. I trust Kojima and doubt he'd put the Metal Gear name on a P.O.S., so I'm gonna definitely check this out when it arrives.

But the "Revengeance" sub-title NEEDS to go. It's disgusting.

I don't like that subtitle either. I thought it was terrible at first but might grow on me. Nope, it's still awful.

Platinum games loves over the top action and corny humor, the title fits them.

It's as dumb as Bennifer or Bradjelina.

And Bayonetta was called dumb a lot of times, and IMO is one of the best 360 games(suck we didn't get a solid version like them).

Bayonaise may have had a nice fighting mechanic, but the rest was trash from characters to level design to story. Vanquish was like a fun shooter, but again shallow. MGS kind of needs a good story.

Have to disagree with World on that. The design work in it is actually quite wonderful. It isn't just the combat that is great in Bayonetta, I would say overall design is great with some real astounding set pieces and levels. Unique too, that is a real rarity in the industry today.

About the only weakness it has is the story, which is a bit muddled and silly but that almost goes with the tone of the entire piece.

I just wasn't impressed, bits and pieces of city areas floating in space and a whole lot of black and gold didn't do it for me.

I knew you wouldn't like it World, me and you are very different at gaming taste...I fall in love with the likes of Demon's Souls and you just returned it asap xD.

The entire purpose of Bayonetta was tongue-in-cheek. And it did it perfectly.

This is why I have a great respect for him. It should however have just stayed cancelled. The best path for MGS as a whole.

said before and will say again, Raiden is a boring figure to start with and it is Kojima's great gut instinct and clear sharp vision to cancel it, rest need not to be said...

I fully look forward to the MGS5 with the story of the Boss and Cobra Unit in WWII Normandy invasion secret mission (as Kojima indirectly implied in his interview), it will be beyond epic with these bunches of legendary soldiers, and maybe a young "Jack or John" aka Naked Snake practicing and developing CQC with his greatest mentor The Joy aka "The Boss"...:D

I'm a huge MGS fan, and I loved Bayonetta, but have some serious doubts about this.

MGS pioneered cinematic story telling in gaming, so story and character development are crucial.

This reminds me a lot of Metroid Other M... love Metroid, love Team Ninja, but it just didn't turn out well. Mainly because Team Ninja can't write a story to save its life. The fact that the game was marketed as a story driven game, made sitting through the hokey dribble all the more painful.

Bayonetta and Vanquish have tight action, but crap story. I can see MGS: Revengance turning out the same way. Hopefully Kojima continues to keep a close on eye on this.
