Kojima On Rising: "I Thought Nothing Good Would Come Of This"
The transition and rebirth of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (originally dubbed "Metal Gear Solid: Rising") is well known, but here's another interesting tidbit:
According to a recent CNN interview, franchise creator Hideo Kojima said he actually canceled the project at one point in time.
"I canceled it. I made the decision. I just thought that nothing good would come out of this."
Kojima Productions shelved the project and turned their attention elsewhere, primarily because the younger team Kojima had assigned to the game just wasn't up to the challenge. "It was almost lost when they were making it," added Kojima. And it wasn't because of a lack of talent; it was simply due to a lack of expertise in the action genre. When the project was on hold, Kojima and Co. worked on the high-definition remakes of older titles, which eventually became the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, an absolute must for long-time followers.
Lastly, Kojima had this to say about Revengeance:
"If this game becomes hugely successful and popular, then we might make it into a franchise."
And what do the fans have to say about that?

But the "Revengeance" sub-title NEEDS to go. It's disgusting.

About the only weakness it has is the story, which is a bit muddled and silly but that almost goes with the tone of the entire piece.

I fully look forward to the MGS5 with the story of the Boss and Cobra Unit in WWII Normandy invasion secret mission (as Kojima indirectly implied in his interview), it will be beyond epic with these bunches of legendary soldiers, and maybe a young "Jack or John" aka Naked Snake practicing and developing CQC with his greatest mentor The Joy aka "The Boss"...:D

MGS pioneered cinematic story telling in gaming, so story and character development are crucial.
This reminds me a lot of Metroid Other M... love Metroid, love Team Ninja, but it just didn't turn out well. Mainly because Team Ninja can't write a story to save its life. The fact that the game was marketed as a story driven game, made sitting through the hokey dribble all the more painful.
Bayonetta and Vanquish have tight action, but crap story. I can see MGS: Revengance turning out the same way. Hopefully Kojima continues to keep a close on eye on this.
