Reckoning Online Pass Gets You Seven Extra Quests

In the continued battle of publishers versus the pre-owned game market, the Online Pass is becoming more prevalent.

But some game makers want to give you even more incentive to purchase a game new. Take EA's Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the upcoming role-playing game from 38 Studios.

New copies of the title will include the Online Pass, which has become standard fare for EA titles. But here's the unexpected bonus: seven House of Valor faction quests. That's right, only the Pass unlocks these quests so if you wait to buy the game pre-owned, you'll be missing out. Now, it's very possible that those seven missions will end up as downloadable content at some point but of course, you'd have to pay for it.

As for those thinking this is content that was taken out of the game to create such a ploy, don't worry. As 38 Studios community manager "Muse" said in the game's official forums:

"The House of Valor content was not in the finished game/disc at one point, then removed. It isn't there and we're locking you out of it. The House of Valor was created as stand-alone content, and was always intended to be the first DLC. Instead of holding onto it and charging for it later, we opted to give it to everyone who purchases the game new, for free, on launch day."

So there you have it. Gonna get it new?

That's a rather nice excuse for justifying the online pass, I think. I personally don't have much of a problem with it because I always buy my games brand new. But I'm pretty sure that those who go after the used ones would have a different opinion. Still very excited about this game. In fact, I'm getting it first before I get FF XIII-2 (if I ever will buy it).

Now there's an idea. If people who buy used need to make a one time purchase for a pass to play online then it does make sense to give them some kind of bonus for their trouble. Hopefully Sony will start doing the same.

I wouldn't play this game even if were given to me for free.

...memories from demo:
Now you see my shield "SWOOSH"
Now you don't. HA!
Now you see my shield "swoosh"
Now you don't!

It's funny, funny like Looney Toons. Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck pulled crap out from behind themselves all the time.

I really don t see the big deal about it , it s stupid but it will in no way change my mind about the game .

There is nothing anyone can do to prove what he's saying is the truth. If Sony would put a price cap on dlc along with this new online pass, I'd be more inclined to believe that this is a valid incentive. $10 or move on to something else.

I know a couple of people who have no internet.

I know a few more with very limited internet (5 gigs from Verizon or something)

People without regular access to internet are more prevalent than I think most people realize.

You guys do know if you wait too long to buy it brand new the online pass with the game doesn't work because it expires? I don't know how long it takes though.

Anyways, all it means I won't be playing online or I won't get the games with online passes. I preorder the special edition of reckoning so I have nothing to worry about.

This is a nice little extra for those of us who always buy new. I haven't had time for the demo yet, but assuming I don't have a Temjin-like reaction to it, I imagine I'll be picking this up soonish.

I'm perfectly fine with a bonus for new copies of the game

I am very against a game missing major content because its used.
