PSXE Poll Update: Gamers Evenly Split On Twisted Metal

Well, this is interesting.

We asked our readers if they were excited about the impending launch of Twisted Metal; last week's poll let participants rate their excitement level on a scale of 1 to 5. The odd part is that almost exactly the same number of gamers voted for the highest and lowest anticipation levels.

This means the community is split right down the middle, so we're not about to attempt a result interpretation. On the positive side, this means a great many are pumped for the return of an iconic franchise; on the other hand, just as many really don't care in the slightest. In the past, we've often worried about the relevance of the name "Twisted Metal" in a very different industry that features more casual gamers than ever before; younger, less ardent gamers who may have never heard of the name.

Remember, David Jaffe said the game needed to sell at least a million copies just to break even, so here's hoping... Anyway, this week, we focus on the biggest release of 2011 thus far- Final Fantasy XIII-2. Currently, based on 15 reviews at Metacritic, it's hovering around 80 or 81; did you expect higher or lower? Or was that about what you expected?

I love the TM series. TM2 is easily in my top 5 favorite multiplayer games of all time. But I'm hesitant when it comes to this game.

I'm not hesitant at all. This game looks badass. David Jaffe seems to really put in his all to make this game good. He knows more about Twisted Metal than anything else. Day one for me. I need something different than the usual on foot shooters.

Twisted Metal is already pre-ordered here. Needless to say, my house is excited for it, and if it is as good as I think it's going to be, I'll pick up a second copy.

Actually, a new Syphon Filter game is said to be deep in development right now and will receive a formal announcement sometime in February.

I think I voted three on TM, I will get it, I just know not when.

As for XIII-2, I was expecting higher because they really seemed to be on the right track to fixing the many complaints about the original. That being said, I had to laugh at (I think it was) CVG's review. They said it was better than XIII, then rated it a full point a half lower. I mean... incongruency or what?

This is precisely my problem with the reviews, most of them state it is an improvement over XIII-1, but then the give it a lower score than XIII-2...sense it make none.

I am currently replaying XIII-1 before the release this Firday, I havent played through it since the release but I have to say it is one of the most emotional games I have ever played, the conflict between Snow and Hope in Palumpolum was just brilliant. When people moan about the story and the gameplay, I simiply do not understand why... while there are a few faults - like the game over screen when a lead character dies - the paradigm system is excellent and really keeps every battle intense.

I'm only on chapter 8 again now but I am still convinced that this is one of the best experiences this gen has to offer and even if the reviews dont add up correctly I absolutely cannot wait to play XIII-2.

The excuse for that incongruency (valid or not) is that the bar is constantly moving: a game of the same quality but released two years later would deserve a lower score when compared to the top-notch games released in the intervening period.

I just checked the Amazon best seller lists and it looks like Twisted Metal is in a reasonably good position. I think it will do well at launch.

And right now we have a new generation of gamers that have never played and/or even heard of Twisted Metal. I think it will do well at launch thanks to the fans but there is also a strong possibility that it will gain momentum after good word of mouth gets around. In particular the part about Twisted Metal having party chat within the game. That's definitely going to be a plus.

I will wait until the reviews start coming in for TM. I bought TMB and was very disappointed with the UK version.

As for FF13-2, I think 8 out of 10 us a very respectable score. I would deem that to be a "Good" classification. If it had scored in the 5's-6's then that would be a mediocre score. I've never understood why 8's or even high 7's are deemed to be terrible scores.

Twisted Metal is an old, old franchise that has a very particular niche, so I'm not surprised by these statistics. I simply can't wait for the true sequel to TMB and the return of the best and most diverse multiplayer around.

I'm what you would consider a "hard core" gamer, I've played and owned every single TM released. My tastes have changed a bit and I'm just not excited for TM. Twisted Metal for me would be casual gaming now. I hope the game delivers though...

For the new poll, I voted not surprised, 8 is about right.

It reinforces my opinion on the game.

It's pretty decent in and of it's own right. But sitting at 10 points lower than your typical FF, it doesn't score as well as it's predecessors.

It's pretty much what most level headed folks have been saying all along. Seems from a measurable scoring point, the opinion that it's a good game, but not a great FF is well reinforced.
