Bioshock Infinite Will Have The Best Story Of The Year
I'm taking bets on this one.
I'm always on the lookout for a fantastic story and this year, I have every confidence that Bioshock Infinite will deliver an excellent plot and interesting characters. It might be about as well written as one can expect from the video game industry today (don't misinterpret that).
There should be some stiff competition, as I've always said the storylines in Grand Theft Auto are underrated, so GTAV is a definite contender. Then there's Mass Effect 3, which is bound to have a fantastic story, but based on what I've read, I get this feeling that hardcore fans of the franchise might be split on the end result... Hard to say. Perhaps the wild card is Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us, which could feature an incredible story, but we're not even sure it'll launch in 2012. Max Payne 3 is another possibility.
The bottom line, however, is that Bioshock has always boasted amazing, memorable stories. In some ways, I put them on the same level as Metal Gear Solid, because they're just so damn engrossing. Bioshock doesn't focus as much on non-interactive cut-scenes, but the games consistently make you aware of the plot with beautiful pacing, excellent voice performances, and an atmosphere that is second-to-none. I see all of that - and more - in Bioshock Infinite, which is why I'm so freakin' excited for that game. Fans of the franchise are on my side, right?
And by the way, anybody who calls it "just another shooter" gets swatted upside the head.
P.S. At one time in this industry's history, any Final Fantasy would automatically be in the running for story of the year. But as much as I love FFXIII-2...well, no.

second, I don't like the feeling of first person when gaming, I feel very limited control of myself in first person and feel slow and clumsy...
I got all your points, but I just can't get into FP games, I tried and struggled very hard, but sorry, no...

Also, I broke down and pre-ordered a first-edition Vita. Can't wait to see if there'll be some excellent story-driven games on that device too! :D

One important factor is that Infinite is a *new* story. That gives them freedom to make an amazing story with no constraints.
With Mass Effect most of us all had a slightly different experience than other players in regards to the choices you made, who you favoured of the companions, who survived in earlier games etc.
All those variations puts a huuuuge pressure on BioWare on making a good game for *all* those different player experiences. When you think about it, it's pretty damn madness to make such a game continue over three instalments.
Infinite, on the other hand is not only a new set of characters but a completely different world. Everything is new! That makes it easier in many ways. Plus, based on the first game we just KNOW it will be good.
Infinite is up there with ME3 on my most anticipated list for 2012, with GTA5 on a good second place. Those three alone makes this year stellar already. Everything else is a bonus.

Personally, AC is up there with the best and AC: Revelations took incredible emotional turns and *SPOILERS* Altier's and Ezio's send offs were incredibly emotional and poetically done, especially Ezio's....And that is just the characters. Then you have all kinds of amazingly intelligent plot events going off like that of the ancient civilisation that got wiped out by a solar flare, a completely plausible idea in actuality.
However, AC has a problem of pacing and presentation. If those can be improved, it would beat almost anything.
Other mentions this year include The Last Guardian (if it arrives) that'll surely own any story out there.
Journey. Flowers was geniusly poetic.
Ni No Kuni. Ghibli produce plots that sit among the best of all time almost every time they release a film. If Ghibli is no exception here, then, again, no competition. Whilst i believe it will be (accounts by critics and players seem to indicate so), how a Ghibli plot will be translated to game remains to be seen. I believe it may dilute the impact of the plot and make it fall short of others, but definitely have the best storyline of any RPG this gen.
Catherine (Europe). Having completed it already, it is easily in the running. A highly intelligent, artistic and symbolic plot. The dubbing isn't too bad either. However, with it being kind of being an arthouse plot, it makes it very subjective.
GTA5. As already said.
Bioshock. They are fantastic at creating a world. And that is incredibly important when you make a film or game. You have to live and breath the world you create. Even if it was entirely set in one room, you have to think about the world outside all the same and create all it's unique details for us to see or feel. It is crucial to absorbing the viewer into your world.
I think Levine fulfils a lot of this with his games and proceeds to create a deeper storyline filled with symbolic gestures, on-point current world issue mentions, great pacing, great music and characters. However, it's an acquired taste and what kind of detaches me from the game is the hollywood esq set pieces and action. It almost reminds me of the awful Tim Burton at times.
Yakuza 5? In japan at least. This one's a given.

In fact, in Brotherhood, sometimes I felt the story got in the way more often. But I have all the hope in the world that ACIII will have an awesome plot.
