Capcom Not Worried About Losing Fans With RE Spin-Off
It's always hard (and risky) when you attempt to change a traditional formula.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City producer Masachika Kawata told CVG that it was a big challenge leaving the survival/horror theme behind. At the same time, he's not worried about annoying the franchise's hardcore fans, as Operation Raccoon City is merely a spin-off and not an actual installment in the series.
"In terms of the fans of traditional Resident Evil, I was not worried because we have the numbered titles as well. Also, we thought it was important to broaden our market by creating spin offs."
He said he hopes the game will cater to "both existing and new Resident Evil fans," and that even the old-school followers would find "much to enjoy." To conclude, Kawata said-
"I believe we managed to create a unique and exciting game."
With SOCOM developer Slant Six at the helm, you can bet it won't play like any RE title before. But it's interesting to hear Capcom say it was a "challenge" to abandon the survival/horror concept, because it appears they don't have a problem with more action in RE6, either. The publisher also isn't concerned about losing fans, so...well, we'll see.
