PSN Undergoes Name Change, Becomes SEN On February 8

Man, we're just so used to "PlayStation Network." It'll be weird referring to it as the "Sony Entertainment Network."

We knew before that Sony would phase out the Qriocity brand and rename the PSN as the SEN but it'll become official in regards to user accounts on February 8. Readers have forwarded us an email they've received (which has been posted in the NeoGAF forums) that announces the change.

There isn't much else to report, though. This change is only cosmetic; nothing but the name of your account will change. Everything will still function as it always has, and you won't be asked to change your username or password; remember, any attempts to "verify" such information from Sony are fake and shouldn't be given any attention. Here's how Sony responded after the news leaked:

"The goal is for there to be one networked log-in for all Sony services. Changing the name 'PlayStation Network account' to 'Sony Entertainment Network account' helps clarify the unity between PSN and other Sony Entertainment Network services."

By the way, for some reason, this doesn't apply to the PSP. User accounts through that device will still say "PlayStation Network." ...weird.

I don't care for the rebranding, and it's at a bad time as well. The Playstation Network make tremendous ground this generation to become what it has, people know it. The PS3 has also been the long term console this generation. So I don't get it.

I sort of get the feeling that Sony will abandon the Playstation brand and the PS4 will be called something entirely different. Ok realistically, maybe not the PS4 but in the future I cant help but wonder if they would do a complete re-branding. I don't know why I feel that way, but it all starts somewhere, and it started with the PSN becoming the SEN.

I hope this isn't the case though, the Playstation brand is Sony's bread and butter as far hardware goes.

Perhaps it's an eventual transition into using the SEN for the ps4? In any case, I like how Sony's trying to unify all their services into one, it makes it a lot easier for everyone.

I'm not liking the new name change, and it's NOT going to keep the Playstation name in relevance enough.

I'll admit that all 18 of my various Playstation systems have all been one hell of a guilty pleasure, but I still don't my Playstation Network to sound like it's a now going to be a "SIN".

does this mean that we could have our SEN ids signed in into one SEN device at a time? why didnt they just keep playstation network as a branch on the sony entertainment network.

This is not good at all! Seriously SEN!? It's more like sin!! I heard that PS4 won't be called that as in some parts in asia the number 4 is considered to be bad luck to an extent that they remove it from thier phones!

yeah nothing else "right now" changes anyway... i remember when Sony would say "PSN will always be free" now that theyre changing it to SEN.... later on down the line they can start charging us to play online and say "We said PSN would always be free we never made such a claim regarding SEN"

This could be advantageous to them, after all it wasn't the SEN that was down for weeks.

This decision was probably in the works even before that but the rebranding will distance themselves from it and might help them in the long run.

Im sure i read that it will still be called PSN its only the account itself that changes name... so youll be using your SEN account to login to PSN.
