Battleship Video Game A Blend Of FPS And Naval Strategy
You may have seen the trailer during the Super Bowl. "Battleship" is going to hit movie theaters like six tons of bricks.
And now, Activision Blizzard and Hasbro have announced that a video game based on the film is in the works at developer Double Helix games. Inspired by the classic naval strategy game and featuring a stand-alone story from the Universal Pictures upcoming epic adventure, Battleship "offers a blend of strategic naval command and first-person action gameplay."
We'll play as elite demolitions specialist Cole Mathis who is stationed in the gorgeous Hawaiian archipelago. Or rather, he's kinda trapped as it's a "veritable communications dead zone," so Mathis alone must command the U.S. Navy fleet in a "siege at sea," while still handling troops on the shore for a "war on the shore."
Said Mark Blecher, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Digital media and Marketing at Hasbro:
"With a BATTLESHIP videogame, we have an amazing opportunity to take our beloved property and give it a modern-day spin. The merging of tactical and action elements immerses players in an epic maritime conflict. Activision is completely up to the task of delivering a high-intensity thrill ride that's perfectly suited for today's console owners."
The game combines strategy with first-person shooter gameplay, as we'll "seamlessly switch" between the battlefield and the Battle Command map, which provides an overview of the situation. And of course, all your favorite ships from the old-fashioned game are involved (cruisers, carriers, destroyers, submarines, etc.). Battleship will launch for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in Europe this April; North American gamers have to wait until May 15, although we're not sure why.
