Resident Evil Fans Say Gameplay Supersedes Atmosphere

There's no doubt that any interactive entertainment experience is pretty worthless without good gameplay.

But Resident Evil aficionados have always put a premium on the atmosphere and setting, right? At least, they often tell you they do; their memories usually involve some of the freakier, jump-out-of-your-seat moments in the history of the franchise. Dogs leaping through the window, yes?

But when push comes to shove, it seems the vast majority say gameplay remains the most important. According to an MCV survey (as cited by TheSilentChief), 41% of gamers selected "fighting and combat" as the most important element in a Resident Evil title, while only 13% chose "suspense and tension." Other options were "involvement in story," "violence," "tricks & skills," and "short play-through."

Now, here's an interesting question for all the horror followers: do you think these results would've been different had the franchise in question been Silent Hill? Historically, fans of Konami's frightening series have looked down upon RE fans as being more about the action and less about the mental, visceral involvement. What do you think?

I don't see why atmosphere and gameplay can't co-exist with each other. Why does one have to take the backseat to the other? To me, RE has gone downhill since it has done away with what made it great to begin with and has migrated over a more action oriented genre. I blame the current generation of gamers and a sign of the times unfortunately. I loved the more shock value moments of the originals and the tank controls just added more panic and tension. The earlier titles will always have a place in my heart unlike RE4 and all later entries, for now at least. As for Silent Hill, the atmosphere is what makes that series what it is as well. Though it too has seemed to started moving in the direction of a more action oriented nature as well if Homecoming was any indication. Hopefully that's not the case. Just my two cents.

This should be a no brainer, unfortunately it seems zombies have taken Capcom's.

I don't agree with the thought that RE has to be more action-y, there's already enough action games to keep all of us occupied.

What we need is more suspense that truly tightens up our pucker factor by ten-fold, so I feel RE should return to what made it what it was.

And let's hope Silent Hill isn't going to be heading down the same fork in the road.

If it plays like a shooter and it feels like a shooter then its a shooter regardless of what Capcom puts in the title.

no, atmosphere is and always has been resident evil. That's why I've walked away from the series. It shouldn't be an action series but unfortunately that is what it has become.

The results make me wonder if that 41% of "RE fans" never bought an RE game before RE 5. As someone who has only played RE 4 (and not all of it), I can't really say anything about the gameplay of the earlier titles (which I do now own thanks to PS+), but I understand that they are a bit more focused on combat/action and less on atmosphere than SH. Still, I find the results surprising if they do reflect the responses of long-time fans.

And, no, clunky controls don't automatically mean that a game isn't focused on action.

If RE5 was any more of a shooter it would have been called House of the Dead. I have a feeling that the best Resident Evil games are behind us.

That's only because the games have changed so much that it's a necessity. If they were still made like the 1st RE, the atmosphere would be the most important factor. But now, we have infected people that run at you and loads of wild creatures that take an un-normal amount of ammo to kill. I wish it were like the old days....(sigh). Now it's more about the action instead of the horror. It's like the difference between a horror movie and a thriller movie, two completely opposite genres that really suck bad when combined.
