Resident Evil Fans Say Gameplay Supersedes Atmosphere
There's no doubt that any interactive entertainment experience is pretty worthless without good gameplay.
But Resident Evil aficionados have always put a premium on the atmosphere and setting, right? At least, they often tell you they do; their memories usually involve some of the freakier, jump-out-of-your-seat moments in the history of the franchise. Dogs leaping through the window, yes?
But when push comes to shove, it seems the vast majority say gameplay remains the most important. According to an MCV survey (as cited by TheSilentChief), 41% of gamers selected "fighting and combat" as the most important element in a Resident Evil title, while only 13% chose "suspense and tension." Other options were "involvement in story," "violence," "tricks & skills," and "short play-through."
Now, here's an interesting question for all the horror followers: do you think these results would've been different had the franchise in question been Silent Hill? Historically, fans of Konami's frightening series have looked down upon RE fans as being more about the action and less about the mental, visceral involvement. What do you think?

What we need is more suspense that truly tightens up our pucker factor by ten-fold, so I feel RE should return to what made it what it was.
And let's hope Silent Hill isn't going to be heading down the same fork in the road.

And, no, clunky controls don't automatically mean that a game isn't focused on action.
