Quantic Dream: Heavy Rain "Didn't Do Anything" With PS3's Power
Gee, we thought Heavy Rain looked pretty damn incredible.
But Quantic Dream boss David Cage frankly told IGN that his team didn't do anywhere near enough with the PlayStation 3's capabilities and in truth, the system has much more to offer.
"We had thought we had done a pretty decent job on Heavy Rain, and we just realized we didn't do anything with the hardware. We could do much more than that, and this is what we intend to do in the near future. There's still a lot to do with the PlayStation 3 I'm telling you."
Yeah, see, we knew we didn't need new hardware any time soon. And if a tech demo - check that, a one-year-old tech demo - can amaze everyone, we're almost frightened to see what Quantic Dream has in store for us...oh wait, no we're not.
Furthermore, if you were wondering, this project is indeed exclusive to the PS3. Considering what we've seen in that demo, we're pretty certain no other console could handle the developer's crazy ambitious vision, anyway, but it's nice to get the confirmation.
"We are exclusive to Sony right now. We're open to all options [such as becoming a first-party studio], but again, we're not a studio driven by money. It's an important element, of course, but it's not like 'Tell me how much money you give me and I'm going to do whatever you want.'"
It seems a lot of designers keyed into that last statement, which is why we saw quite a few teams going multiplatform this generation. But sometimes, developers care more about the quality of their product than they do about reaching a mass audience with what might be a less-than-revolutionary game. As for Quantic Dream's game...just tell us!

What I'm about to say is REALLY off topic, but I just NEED to let out that I just got accepted onto a Game Art Design course for University!!! 8D
Hopefully, within the next 3-4 years, I'll be able to work with the likes of Ubisoft and Rocksteady.....I'M SO PUMPED!!!! XD
(Sorry about the really long post....I'm practically bubbling over in excitement :)

I loved Heavy Rain. I thought it was an awesome acheivement for console gaming, and was blown away by Kara, but I think David Cage should do a little less talking sometimes.

Until they break that 5-6 million sold plateau, they are definitely somewhat limited by used sales if you were to directly change the used sales into new sales.
Used games might not be bad, but the system certainly hurts the middle men and underdogs in the industry. I think at this point, it's fairly widely recognized that consumers -need- a used market but in this industry, the model is broken on all ends. Even the developers current strategies aren't appropriate.

And why should he talk less? Because you disapprove of his potion on used games?
For shame...

But this isn't the first time he's made comments about the used game market. I think i just had a problem with him saying that "they're not a team driven by money". It just looks foolish if he is going to continue to harp about the used game market that cuts into his team's profits

We don't need to get into the whole "used game debate" because we've all been there done that, and because I know why developers don't like the used game market.
Obviously they want to make money, and I feel that they should be entitled to money for their hard work. You don't need to condescendingly ask me if they should make games for free. I get that.
I just feel he shouldn't come out and say "we're not a studio that is driven by money.....BUT, we don't like the used game market because we make less money". I have no problem with him making comments about used games, he's not the first developer to do so. I just think its a huge contradiction to say what he said.

They were set pieces indeed, Heavy Rain was much like a theatre. But still I could not shake the feeling that *something* could have been done to make it feel less "set-piece"-ish.
I guess that's what they tried in LA Noire. There were still the small "set pieces" there too (mainly the different crime scenes), they were just connected via one larger game world.
Still, there was something missing in LA Noire too. I can't put my finger on it, but something didn't feel "right" in that game either.
But they are both treading new grounds in each their ways, and it will be interesting to see how things evolve next!

And Heavy Rain's character details.were very good, specially the faces. But the environment. detail was nothing special graphics wise. I always thought that PS3 could do more than that, specially after playing Uncharted.

Overall though, I was very impressed with the story of this game. Visuals were good and everything, but the story and Kara's acting was fantastic.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING NEXT, CAGE? Your presence and next game is NEEDED right now in the industry!

when i played MGS & seen the amount of content & quality it offered at that time i said it will be years before the ps3 max out if its showing this much detail in its early years.
6 years in & developers are learning how to optimize the ps3 so that means plenty more masterpieces are coming. with vita here now your getting the same quality on the go.

It's good to know the PS3 has this hid away unearthed power and all, but Im beginning to suspect Paul syndrome coming down the road with some people and PS3. Temjin, what is Paul syndrome?
story time:
I worked at a computer shop for a few years. A nerdy computer guy worked there, named Paul. Paul loved his Pentium 3's. He always talked about how great the Pentium 3 was and how in many ways it was still better than newer generation processers (Pentium D and Athlon 64 era)I thought, yeah, that's cool and all Paul. I'm glad you love your Pentium 3 and how much it actually could do and how in obscure discrete ways it was superior to a Pentium 4, or whatever. But basically, the market has moved passed that and there's a great many things the newer processors can do that is tantamount to something far greater than whatever cream filled center this Jaw Breaker Pentium 3 supposidly has.
So to connect Paul to PS3. I feel similar sentiments. Now David Cage is a pro dev who makes good looking stuff. So coming from him it means something more. But really, at 6 years of age with VIta's and iPad 3's claiming to be as, or more powerful than, the PS3, I think before too much longer it'd be nice to leave some of that hard to reach power in the PS3 unearthed and move onto something newer and possibly more tangible with new tech. Tech that doesn't have to be constrained inside a little Ipad casing or Vita. Really, when it comes to heat and power consumption, a full fledged console at this point could blow the doors off of any handheld device today. So while utility tells me, let's get the most out of Pandora's Box, the more eager side of me knows we can have a whole lot more if we just move on.
Either way, I'm so busy these days, I don't think I'm in a rush to go out and buy anything new and fresh anyway. I'd just like to start seeing it at this point.
