EA Takes Cue From Activision, "Looking" At Subscription Models
The Call of Duty Elite initiative has turned out to be a huge success for Activision. And other publishers are paying attention.
That includes Activision's primary competitor, Electronic Arts. According to what EA Games boss Patrick Soderlund told VentureBeat, EA is definitely looking into the possibility of launching similar business models.
"I think it's fair to say that we're looking at that. Like all other companies, we're looking at how we can maximize our investment in this and get the most out of our investment and get more people playing this product. That may take us to different places, but we're not really talking about where that is yet."
EA CEO John Riccitiello has already gone on the record complimenting Activision for its "best-in-class performance" for producing Call of Duty Elite, which is of course a subscription service tacked on to the incredibly popular CoD franchise. He added that Activision has done a great job promoting the initiative. But even if EA is looking at a comparable business model for their future games, they're not thinking about "taking down" Call of Duty. Said Soderlund:
"When it comes to taking Call of Duty down, you know what? I don't look at it like that. We are in this business because we want to make the best possible products. Call of Duty is a shooter, but it's a different shooter. And I think they have a market; we have a market. I'm fine with what I'm doing. I'm going to continue innovating and doing as best as I can with my teams. Hopefully that's going to lead us to more units [sold] and more happy consumers."
Call of Duty Elite has been a big hit, so maybe EA can reap the benefits of a subscription option for the next Battlefield entry. Or maybe they're cooking something up for this year's Medal of Honor: Warfighter. How do you feel about these subscriptions that offer fans extra content throughout the year for a fee?
