Mass Effect 3 Petitioners Raise $27k For Child's Play Charity

Even the biggest messes can turn positive.

The recent ugliness concerning Mass Effect 3 has prompted a tidal wave of editorials, features, and opinion pieces, either supporting, denouncing or merely questioning the outcry.

As some of you know, petitioners against the apparently terrible ending(s) in the game have created an online petition to make their case; ultimately, the goal is to appeal to developer BioWare. Essentially, the fans want a new climax. But you know, kids are gonna benefit: A few of the petitioners have formed a donation drive, with the combined purpose of drawing attention to their cause and donating to a charity. It's the Child's Play charity and in less than 24 hours, contributors have raised $27,000 for Child's Play...and no matter what your stance, that's impressive.

"The Retake Mass Effect - Child's Play donation drive is a community driven effort to bring positive attention to our petition for an alternate ending to the fantastic Mass Effect series. The Child's Play charity was chosen as a charity started by gamers to provide video games for the patients at Children's Hospitals all over the world.

We would like to dispel the perception that we are angry or entitled. We simply wish to express our hope that there could be a different direction for a series we have all grown to love."

It's just creepy and weird. Why not just start a charity? Why do they need something in return from a video game company and why does it take a video controversy to motivate these people to give?

Doesn't seem like charity to me. More like they're trying to save face.

Yea the charity fits the topic. It is also pretty impressive they raised that amount of money already. Just glad there's a good cause in all of this!

...this petition is just, I don't know, crazy! I don't see how any fan of any game could want the developers to literally change am ending in a game, good or bad.

Very nice of them to do that but from the start I never felt these guys and gals had any sense of entitlement. Fans were disgusted by a putrid ending to a game some have put 5 years into eventhough closure was promised. That's fine, the developers talked a big game and failed miserably to deliver so the fans' wrath has been felt. My only problem with the reaction is that in their demanding for a new ending the only thing the fans can get is DLC that cost at least $10. So what's the message there? If I'm a developer and see fans reacting this way I consider doing the same thing Bioware did. Make half a game with a garbage ending to tick off the fans then say "I'm sorry" by charging them more with DLC to 'fix' the problem. The petition solves nothing, it's just ridiculous and the fans should've just accepted the bad ending and moved on. Best response would be to send a message to Bioware and EA by not buying their games in the future.

I get it....you don't like the way a game ends. So you wish the developers would change it, huh? Well, since we are at it, will Nintendo please change the ending in Mario 3? The way Koopa just dies by falling in the floor is terrible. Thanks! /sarcastic

Note: anything for the kids is great but did it have to come from a disagreement to the ending of a game? Maybe we should look at just raising the money for them without having a game changed?

I know its probably just me but it makes me feel like, "oh I donated, therefor I am good and 'entitled' to a new ending." I just feel like we should be donating for a better reason then to change the ending of a game. How about donate for the good of humanity...

To a certain extent I think most altruistic acts have a certain amount of selfishness in them, but we shouldn't discount that action speaks louder than words. I don't personally think this should matter and force Bioware to change anything, but I do think it's an overall good.

In America at least, those people are exercising their rights to Freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of association.

Not to mention they are giving the develoepers a great incentive to provide an additional ending. I'm sure a terminally ill child would love to have a game room where they can have a little bit of joy in their lives.

You are more then incorrect. I donate 10% of my check to ECF in the NW as well as donate my time and service to the homeless on Tues and Thursday nights (homeless children and kitchens). I do this knowing that I am doing something good in the world and with no personal gain.

Its good.... but to allow it to be done this way is not an act of humanity, it is an act of selfishness. If it was not for gamers wanting a different ending, this would have never happened. And if it wasn't for a feeling of self entitlement, then the gamers wouldn't have demanded a different ending. I get that in the end, something great happened...but I disagree that it had to be done the way it did....maybe we should just give to give and not because we want a different ending.

Just completed ME3 and saw all the endings plus the secret one... I was actually pretty annoyed by it and this is coming from someone who actually liked the FFXIII-2 ending... I found some interesting theories about the endings that actually make sense, but only if the story doesn't end in ME3 (kinda like the FFXIII-2 ending), but I think I read that ME3 was the end of the franchise, so If that's the case, this all still irks me...

On topic... well I guess at least all of this fanboy rage (mine included) is going to a good cause, I'd sure hope all fanboy causes would do that...

I like that the charity wasn't just any old thing.

Oh but who cares, they are all just whinging little out of touch people running the campaign and supporting it anyway or anyone who has negative feelings to begin with. That haven't worked a day in their life and get given every single thing that comes their way in this day and age.

Lets just all shutup, completely unless we have positive feelings.

While I think it's a bit silly to get this worked up over an ending to a game, unlike most people who whine about games (including myself from time to time) they're actually doing something worthwhile and a lot of people are getting help because of it. That should be applauded, regardless of the reasons.

you know you have done a awesome job when people are willing to pay for a changed ending!
its a real shame.
ME2 felt like the developers spent 6 months choosing what colour a penny should be.
thats how much attention to detail it had, it just felt like everything was gone over with a fine tooth comb.
ME3 on the other hand feels really rushed!
side missions especially, there not half as well thought out and integrated as what ME2 offered.
goes for the characters too.

I'm planning to buy mass effect 3 in the future, but upon reading this makes me want to think twice about buying the game, those guys love the series so they want a different ending and some kids will benefit form it, i think it's good for them.
I think if it's FFVII remake it will generate a lot more money.FFVII for the ps3....hehe
