Metal Gear Series Tops 31 Million Sold

No, kiddies, we promise it didn't begin with Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation.

The Metal Gear series is now celebrating its 25th anniversary and in a lifetime sales update, Kojima Productions has revealed that all told, the titles in this remarkable franchise have combined to sell 31.1 million copies worldwide (as of December 31, 2011).

The announcement came when the team addressed the opening of the Smithsonian Art of Video Games Exhibition, which kicked off on Sunday. Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty will be part of the exhibit, and the man himself, Hideo Kojima, is in Washington DC to participate in a public discussion concerning his games. For a bit of history, the first Metal Gear hit the MSX2 (Google it, if you must) way back in 1987. Since that time, as you well know, the series has gone to to be one of the most respected in the industry.

And yeah, it had better be part of that Smithsonian display.

How can MGS4 not be a part of it? I played Metal Gear on NES, no clue what an MSX2 is.

And what will they think when people show up at the Smithsonian dressed as a cardboard box?

Honestly, I would have that the whole multitude of MG & MGS games that have been strung out over all those platforms & handheld's, would have made for much more than just 31 million sold.

Where have all those people been.....living under a rock maybe??????

That review is a giant nitpick session. Also he did it 2 years after the game came out. There are not many games from 2008 that withstand the test of time graphically nor mechanically.

Well, that was just about the most stupid thing I've ever read. The guy picks the most PATHETIC reasons to call it a 'bad game' - "There are too many weapons", "Snake takes too long to fall through the air", "Hair on the character models is terrible", "Press START to continue" - the list goes on and on and it's all so...RIDICULOUS!

MGS4 was an absolute masterpiece - so much so that the only fault's people can pick are the utterly pathetic ones like the aforementioned.

no game stands the test of time better than MGS4. its still the best game PS3 has to offer. arguably the best game in playstation's 16 year history. yea i said it.

31.1 million is impressive, but I think it's even more impressive how Kojima managed to build an epic, 50-year-long saga around one the first games he ever designed for Konami, without having to retcon much. At the time, I don't think anyone anticipated how big it would become. Not to mention the whole stealth element being introduced to work around the MSX's processing and graphical limitations.
