Activision: No, You Don't Need Two CoD Elite Subscriptions

Gee, people are always willing to believe the worst about Activision, aren't they?

During an investor call last month, the company mentioned "Call of Duty Elite 2.0," which instantaneously kicked off angry reactions: "Does this mean we have to pay for another subscription for this year's new Call of Duty?" "Do we have to pay for more services added to Elite?"

Oh, calm down. Let's not lose our heads. According to community boss Dan Amrich as posted at Activision's One Of Swords blog, the "2.0" does not mean it'll be a new subscription attached to this year's CoD (which everyone assumes is Black Ops 2, although it hasn't been officially announced).

"This shareholder tease led some people to assume that they would have to buy two subscriptions to Elite - the one you have now and a new one for the forthcoming game. Nope. This is more about upgrading and revising the service that currently exists. They always promised Elite would evolve, but now they clearly have some specific upgrades in mind timed to the next game. It helps to remember that Elite is a service, not a boxed product."

He went on to compare Elite to Xbox Live. You pay an annual subscription but when Microsoft added some new features like video programming and an updated dashboard interface, you weren't asked to sign up for a second XBL subscription. That'd just be silly...and really mean. So in this case, as Amrich says, "same thing here."

"'Elite 2.0' is just a short, software way of saying 'significant improvements are in the works.'"
