Zipper Interactive Calls It Quits After 17 Years Of Development

Sadly, the rumors were true.

As verified at the developer's Twitter page, Zipper Interactive is closing its doors after  a solid 17 years of making video games.

The studio that brought you the well-received and popular SOCOM titles, as well as the innovative and ambitious MMOFPS, MAG, has had a great impact on the industry, and we wish all employees the best of luck in whatever it is they decide to do. Here's the farewell Twitter message:

"After 17 years it’s time to head off into the sunset. A sincere thank you to all our fans for everything you've done for us. Farewell."

Over the past week, we had heard whispers of layoffs and a project cancellation at Zipper, which just released Unit 13 for the PlayStation Vita. At the time, there was no official information concerning the fate of the team but now, it's a done deal. The developer was also known for producing MechWarrior 3 and Crimson Skies.

We never like posting news like this.

It's always sad to hear news like this. Personally I found them to be quite rubbish but that's personal opinion. Still feel bad that they're laying people off. Wish them all the best.

They may have produced a mixed bag of stuff, but it wasn't that bad was it... I enjoyed MAG a lot when I had time to play it!

Q!

I'm sorry to hear Zipper's gone.

BTW, according to the article I read, Sony stated that the Vita's "Unit 13" will continue with it's daily challenges.

Isn't this the 2nd dev team to go belly up after just releasing a Vita title? Bigbig studios got the boot shortly after releasing Little Deviants.

Its always sad to read about people losing there jobs but as a business decision Sony did the right thing there games were bad to average. Now Sony buy Thatgamecompany or Quantic Dream.

You're pretty much wrong. Socom was what CoD is now, in the PS2 generation. Highly successful. MAG is one of the best shooters this generation. If you're not a fan of their games that's fine, but the industry just lost some great innovators..

Socom 2 FTW! Best game ever. Didn't play any other shooter back then but that game.

I said as a business decision it was right, you can like there games as much as you what but the bottom line is they don't sell.

Bottom line is I'm not arguing whether they should have gone out of business or not. I wish they could have had another chance cus I've been a fan of theirs for a long time and seen the great things they can do. But you called their games "bad to average" I'm disputing that, and also saying we lost a great developer.

as sad as it is, and i feel sorry for them, they have no one but themselves to blame!
this is exactly what happens when you release 3 meh games in a row!

shame, i really wanted to see a SOCOM HD collection, and then a return to the series roots a core tactical squad based game.
looks like the chances of that happening are slim to none!
:(

I tried Socom off and on but they did not grab me. Mag looked promising but I realize I could not get in touch with my inner-mltiplayer. :) With som many MP games out their, CoD and Battlefield the touch competition, its not surprising.

Hopefully something better will come out of the talent there and they move on to bigger and better projects with other studios.

Keep Playing!

Loved MAG, it's probably my favourite console shooter although I stopped playing a while ago, I have some great memories from that game.

Super saddening.

I know a ton of people that were going to get socom 4 but didn't because of the psn downtime.

And I know that that a lot more people would have bought MAG if it had split screen and offline

Why would an MMOFPS have split screen or have an offline mode? Should WoW have an offline mode?
