CD Projeckt Talks "Escaping" With RPGs
Some people just don't get role-playing games. Others trumpet the singular virtues of that engrossing genre.
But why do members of the latter group enjoy such titles? That's a question CD Projeckt lead level artist Marek Ziemak addressed in speaking to CVG. While playing video games is often about escapism, Ziemak believes RPGs may be the best way to get away from it all.
"I think the name of the genre is the answer, it's a role playing game and people like that. I believe most people play the game to experience something different from their everyday life. So that's really one of the main reasons, the need to run away from your normal life.
In most cases you don't want to play as an IT guy, because that's what you're doing every day, you don't want to be a nurse in a game because that's your job. You just want to get out of this reality and check out something else, become a different character because that's what RPG games are valuable for, becoming another person, making decisions, developing as a character."
There has been a lot of talk this generation about what constitutes a role-playing game and at this rate, it's an argument that will never be settled. However, there are some titles that are commonly accepted to be RPGs, such as CD Projeckt's The Witcher 2, which is coming to the Xbox 360 this month and hopefully, to the PlayStation 3 at a later date.
For those of you who do love the RPG experience, the above comments are nothing new. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the genre...don't you want to try it now?

What he say there is the very essence of why I love this genre above everything else. It's what RPG is all about imo, and it most definitely is why I am still a gamer after all these years.

To not like RPG's is OK cause they're not your bag.
BTW, I can't get into RPG's either although I have at least 100+ in my collections & I keep re-trying many of them in the hopes that I'll change my mind over time, but to no avail.
But to actually say RPG's suck just because you don't like them????
"Just wow"

But.....as time goes on with more & more games coming out that either claim to be, or because gamers say they are, some sort of RPG's I've become quite confused on exactly what kind of games are RPG's anymore
FYI, I've heard games like Fallout & Borderlands even being considered as RPG's & if so, then I "LOVE" those kind, but I'm not really sure how most would define them as RPG's....maybe defined as actiony RPG's or RPG lite's, or are they something else completely????
So come on guys & gals...help an old wizard out.

In Borderlands you shoot stuff or drive stuff, period. In Fallout you do so much more, and the fighting is not even the main attraction.
I think one element that makes me determine what is a rpg and what is not, is how much time you spend on straight up action compared to how much time you spend on "other stuff", being it in dialogue, equipment tweaking, exploration, object creation, trading or simply "virtual life"; Outfits, apartments, all that "other stuff".
If all you do in a RPG is to fight stuff with some bosses at given intervals, well that's a very lightweight RPG in my mind. A true RPG should, as this guy points out, give you the option to be someone in a virtual world. It's kinda the reason for the name of the genre, really.

a open world with you and a RPG blowing up cop choppers and cars as they fly past is just about as far away from reality as i wanna get!
id actually say its quite the opposite.
allot of parts of RPGs are very rooted in reality, in fact the only part that isent is the ones who are based on fantasy.
skyrim for instance every bit of that game is based on reality till you get to the flying dragons and magic and species.
the world, combat and everything else though is rooted in reality.
shooters and open world games would be a far better genre for escaping reality!

I don't escape in a shooter or an open world action game. I'm just playing a game blowing stuff up.
But when I invest in crafting a character and interacting with NPCs, leveling up my character and exploring the world, I find it much easier to lose myself in that world.
Mind you it has to be a well crafted RPG. I find I get lost in games when it has characters that I really love or relate to. Where my choices can affect them in some way. Witcher 2 in fact is marvelous for this.

I agree though RPGs are great places to escape to.
