ACIII Creative Director: "We Wanted To Surprise People"
Some people have good ideas, some people have bad ideas. Things get touchy, though, because everyone thinks their idea is good.
Recently, Assassin's Creed III creative director Alex Hutchinson said gamers on the Internet had come up with some "boring" ideas for the new installment's setting. At the time, he was referring to two specific concepts: Feudal Japan and World War II.
But it's not that Hutchinson doesn't believe Assassin's Creed wouldn't work in such environments; in fact, as he told Joystiq during a PAX East follow-up, "any setting is potentially awesome." They just wanted to do something a little different, and the two aforementioned ideas "are very familiar video game settings." Said Hutchinson:
"The exciting thing is that the game can go anywhere. We've had versions of the assassin ... people have thrown ideas around for probably literally any setting that people would think of. But when you get right down to it – when we're doing the actual nitty gritty of spending the time on it, spending a couple years making something – we wanna go to a setting that other games haven't gone to. ...we're trying to find places that will surprise people."
He said some ideas are just "very predictable" and that just wasn't what Ubisoft was going for in ACIII. We all like to think we can come up with fantastic, original ideas for video games but the fact of the matter is, some of us - no, a lot of us - probably can't. There's just so much to consider. Hutchinson finished by saying-
"The internet is not the place for insight, unfortunately."
