ACIII Creative Director: "We Wanted To Surprise People"

Some people have good ideas, some people have bad ideas. Things get touchy, though, because everyone thinks their idea is good.

Recently, Assassin's Creed III creative director Alex Hutchinson said gamers on the Internet had come up with some "boring" ideas for the new installment's setting. At the time, he was referring to two specific concepts: Feudal Japan and World War II.

But it's not that Hutchinson doesn't believe Assassin's Creed wouldn't work in such environments; in fact, as he told Joystiq during a PAX East follow-up, "any setting is potentially awesome." They just wanted to do something a little different, and the two aforementioned ideas "are very familiar video game settings." Said Hutchinson:

"The exciting thing is that the game can go anywhere. We've had versions of the assassin ... people have thrown ideas around for probably literally any setting that people would think of. But when you get right down to it – when we're doing the actual nitty gritty of spending the time on it, spending a couple years making something – we wanna go to a setting that other games haven't gone to. ...we're trying to find places that will surprise people."

He said some ideas are just "very predictable" and that just wasn't what Ubisoft was going for in ACIII. We all like to think we can come up with fantastic, original ideas for video games but the fact of the matter is, some of us - no, a lot of us - probably can't. There's just so much to consider. Hutchinson finished by saying-

"The internet is not the place for insight, unfortunately."

If I'm getting any other game other than ME3 this year it's AC3. If done right this game will solidify its standing as my favorite franchise of this generation.

Feudal Japan would be a really cool setting for a spin off title. Or perhaps a map in the multiplayer or something like that.

However I am extremely pleased with the setting they chose and honestly me and my friends were thinking they were going to do the revolution because there are a lot of conspiracies built around it.

I also dig the native american protagonist. They are pretty much north american ninjas of the forest. I also like the idea of sneaking through forests, such a nice change of pace from the cityscape.

Yeah ww2 and japan are pretty obvious settings although desmond would need some english(which he does have thanks to new info)dutch,portugese or french ancestry to be in 1500-1800's japan....but yeah ninja's kick ass...we need a real ninja game in my opinion...pre 1980's hollywood ninja game.
Anyways with a surname like miles i thought a good setting would be during the easter 1916 rising in dublin ireland,lots of stabbings,explosions & shootings to go along with protests,riots and military shellings.

Maybe I've been looking at the wrong games, but I haven't seen many that are set in the Bakumatsu civil war period in Japan. I thought that would be a great setting -- lots of assassinations, intrigue, larger-than-life personalities, and the shift of a national identity that set the groundwork for major events in the 20th century. Plus awesome architecture different than we've seen in the AC games.

Most of the games I know about set in Japanese history focus on the end of the warring states period and the rise of the Shogunate. Which is great too, but I get that it's ground that has been covered by others.

Not that I have any qualms with their choice of the American Revolution setting, especially with a revised engine improves wilderness action. I think the game is going to be sweet.

That's an interesting distinction, of course, but you have to realize that most all gamers would view most any "old" Japanese setting the same way.

So feudal Japan wouldn't be any different in many eyes to the Japan we saw in the Kessen or Shogun games, for instance.

Yeah that would be an interesting period. However it would be awesome if From Software revived tenchu and made a really good ninja game.

Doesn't have to be hard like Dark Souls or anything but just a really awesome tenchu game would be heavenly.

Well I think those both sound like good ideas, but in the words of Henry Ford "If I gave people what they wanted I would have made a wagon with too many horses"... or something like that. But there is a balance of listening to your fans and exercising your creative licence. I think Ubisoft did the right thing.

I am not sure about that.

WW2 might be an interesting background to play in. The problem with the WW2 shooters was it was the same old same old. Storm this beach, take this jungle, etc.

Keeping the Assassin out of the major battles would be key, but the prospect of moving around in Nazi occupied territories would be blast in my book.

really?
how many games out there are set in japan?
and how many of those are set in ancient japan instead of a more modern setting?
japan would of been a much better choice then the american revolution!
at least japan has some famous landmarks you could climb and it would stand as a much more artistic and beautiful backdrop then america would!
japan would of been a perfect setting then they could of tied them in with the battles the ninjas and samurai had!

the more and more i hear about this the more and more i get worried about it.
i just cant see a assassins creed game in a american setting!
i think thats exactly why they chose it, they wanted a challenge.
but i just cant see it working.

Well let's see, it's official that Desmond already has Arabian, Italian, and North American ancestry. Who's to say him having Japanese, Dutch, etc ancestry is a far cry off? A spin off tied to AC3 and the whole Japan Tokugawa Shogunate era from 1600-1800 period involving the introduction of foreign influences to the country possibly??? Yes please. At one point in time, the use of bladed weapons such as swords and knifes (kitana, tanto, wakizashii) was completely outlawed in Japan. This gave rise to the stealthy concealment of blades such as the infamous cane sword (made popular by blind swordsman Zatoichi). Elements such as these would be right at home in the Assassin's Creed universe. Especially the systematic destruction and eventual elimination of the Samurai social class. Maybe a Templar allegiance of corrupt Japanese officials and European foreigners could be behind such a move? The Assassin side of the war could be comprised of the resisting Samurai, Koga ninja clan members with ties to Altair's lineage. Ubisoft could make it work.
