No Multiplayer For DMC Because Dante "Needed To Be Alone"
Just about every game these days has a multiplayer mode of some kind, but the upcoming Devil May Cry reboot won't.
Publisher Capcom explained why; Alex Jones said the story needed to revolve around Dante's solitude:
"We did think about it at the very beginning, when we were just blue sky thinking. Co-op play came up but I think the story that we wanted to tell would feel false unless Dante was alone in the world. That would detract from that element of the story that we wanted to tell."
Co-op is generally a well-received feature and fans have asked to see it in previous Devil May Cry installments. But such an option ushers in a wealth of complications for the developer, and could result in a very messy - and ultimately frustrating - multiplayer experience. Here's what producer Motohide Eshiro had to say on the subject:
"The thing about Devil May Cry is that it’s a stylish action game, where you’re trying to show off your moves, pull off combos and wow your friends. If you were trying to do that while playing with someone else, you could of course do that in whilst competing, but ultimately it would get in the way of you doing what you’re trying to do.
When a bunch of enemies come out you want to kill them all and go for that SSS rank. If your friend waltzes in and gets one of the other enemies, your SSS goes down to an A because there just aren’t enough enemies to kill, so these aspects of co-op will probably interfere with Dante as a cool character who just comes in and kicks ass."
Personally, I have no interest in seeing DMC get multiplayer, and the same goes with any hack 'n slash action franchise, God of War included. The idea that every single game requires the option is absurd, as most any fan of single-player campaigns will tell you. I just want Ninja Theory to deliver another awesome Dante experience, which has always been - and should always be - a solitary experience.

I love the art style too, NT is going all out. I just hope they don't make this a 5-6 hour game like Enslaved and Heavenly Sword.

Also loving the art style and the entire feel of what I've seen of the game thus far. Can't say much about the style ranking thing, though. I never got above an SS in either 3 or 4. Maybe with the Collection...

I love that their reasoning refers to the narrative, too. It just goes to show NT's devotion to the campaign, and I really do hope that it is up to a similar calibre as their previous offerings. Long-terms DMC fans be damned, this is one of my favourite developers and you SHAN'T take that away from me.
Peace.

I can't make up my mind If I want to try this game, or not. I have a hard time getting really into playing better for style, rather than to be more deadly. Choping vegetables is neat and all but Id like to keep my encounters deadly through and through.
That new DMC trailer did show what Ninja Theory does best. DMC is looking pretty artsy now too. The imagery strikes me as if it's from the modern age of design with strong impressionistic atmospheric tones to convey a dominating mood.
Cool stuff. And Dante isn't Emo.
Oh, and I bet that news anchor is gonna get it at some point during the story ;)
