March NPD: Mass Effect 3 Rises High, But Sales Fall Again
Scandal or no scandal, Mass Effect 3 is atop the sales charts.
The NPD Group has released the industry figures for last month and BioWare's latest landed in the top spot. It even doubled the first-month tally set by its predecessor. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to pull the industry out of its three-month-long tailspin.
The total retail haul was down 25% year-over-year to $1.1 billion; software fell 26% to $585.1 billion and hardware dropped 35% to $323.5 million. The Xbox 360 was once again the top seller. Accessories didn't do too badly, though, as they only fell 8% to $222.5 million; some of this is attributed to Activision's Skylanders figurines, all of which managed to crack into the month's top 10 list for peripherals. Here are the top 10 games for March:
- 1. Mass Effect 3 (X360, PS3, PC) - Electronic Arts
- 2. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (X360, PS3) - Capcom
- 3. MLB 12: The Show (PS3, PSV) - Sony
- 4. NBA 2K12 (X360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, PC) - Take-Two
- 5. SSX (X360, PS3) - Electronic Arts
- 6. Street Fighter x Tekken (PS3, X360) - Capcom
- 7. Mario Party 9 (Wii) - Nintendo
- 8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360, PS3, PC, Wii) - Activision
- 9. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations (X360, PS3) - Namco Bandai
- 10. MLB 2K12 (X360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, PC) - Take-Two
And here's Sony's official statement from the new SCEA Sr. Director of Corporate Communications Dan Race (Patrick Seybold has gone along his merry way):
"Nearly two months after hitting the North American market, the PS Vita ecosystem continues to grow with impressive hardware, software, and peripherals sales among big-box retailers, smaller retail shops and digital. We are seeing strong digital downloads across the board, including full digital-only purchases and extremely high conversion rates for digital demos to full game purchases with titles such as Unit 13, which showcases PS Vita's unique 3G and shooter capabilities. We look forward to furthering the PS Vita momentum with upcoming blockbuster titles like Mortal Kombat and Resistance: Burning Skies, and apps including Skype."
Yes, we're all hoping the Vita continues to be a rising star in the PlayStation world. That thing is sweet, damnit.

PS: I was holding off on playing Master Ninja mode until the Ultimate Ninja mode dlc was released. But, when I checked out the trophies, turns out you have to beat each difficulty to get the trophy, instead of just beating the highest to get the lower ones, too. I think NG2 did that also. Anyways, I'm playing through the Ninja trials these days. I figured I get those out of the way.

Anyway, I'm glad you like NG3. It can draw out the inner ninja for the hardcore playing types. I remember back before NG3's release I was very skeptical of removing the essence element in play, thinking they were dumbing it way down. But after spending tons of time with the game I definitely like this retooling of the system quite a bit. It's fresh feeling but still very familiar. I can't say I like it better or worse than past combat systems, it's just different and a great way to motivate me to keep pressing on to find every nook and cranny of depth they've tucked away into it.
Master Ninja is quite hard and I've found some issues I have with the game that I hope gets fixed in future installments.
One, they've really de-emphazied wall usage and off the wall techniques in this game. Where levels appear to purposely keep you off of the walls. Sometimes it's very useful to get yourself out of a tight situation.
Also I see the original game's design and NGS2's design of having fewer enemies on screen as a more practical design choice by way of the gameplay's auto targeting system and camera.
I really like the up close and personal feel of NG"s play, and I hope they don't ever mess with the feild of view to make it more like a God of War. Games like God of War, Castevania, Rygar etc. all rely on weapons with long range and sweeping actions to make up for their fov positioning. Even Bayonetta is outfitted with many moves that causes her to sweep far distances to account for it as well. When it comes to NG, the katana is an up close and personal weapon and I absoultely love the close up feel and precision I get from it, much like a fighting game. So while NG expects a lot from the user to be able to manually have direct control over the camera, which most definately becomes second nature with enough time, the payoff yields a level of precision unmatched by the games that draw the camera out that adopts more of a birds eye view.
Though, I feel Team Ninja somewhat lost sight of this delicate choice of fewer enemies and a manual camera, because having control over the action falls apart with high quantities of enemies. They try to make up for it by opening up some of the levels but the auto targeting and the combination of setting the camera even closer to Ryu than ever before with more enemies than ever presents major irreconcilable camera issues for NG3 that presents situations where I just can't get control over the situation as I have by and large in earlier games.
Still, it's great stuff!
BTW, my net works again so Im a'okay for online play. THis weekend Im swamped with school projects though.
BTw, the Ninja Add-On pack allows you to use your Claws in the NInja Trials. It's sort of lame that they make you pay to do that but whatever.
ALso, the latest patch update fixed the freeze glitch towards the end of Ninja Trials Leader mission 001.
WOo hoo!

I really just don't get it!!!
Mind you, this is North American sales, and they are clearly biased towards 360 and all things Microsoft.
Kinda noticed that anything that is cheaper and comes out first in North America tends to be more popular with first adoption buyers, and then spreads with more people using the same tech their friends are using, even if there are far better alternatives out there.
Has anyone else noticed this?
If Sony want to be back on top, they need a gimmick, they need to be cheaper and they need to be first out the gate. The hardcore fans might not be happy about it, but at least Sony will make a lot of money which most of will hopefully be used to make awesome core games for the fans.

this years been pretty disappointing so far, normally by this time we have heaps of GOTY contenders!
this year were not even close!
sad, later part of the year is not looking much better either.
i really hope $ony has some exclusives to announce at E3 that will be releasing this year!
otherwise this is going to be the first year the 360 has MORE exclusives releasing in one year then the ps3!
pretty sad when you think about it all we have to look forward to is starhawk, which maybe 10% of the user base is interested in!
i really really hope the last of us releases this year $ony seriously needs it!

Also, you are overlooking the very obvious GotY contender of this part of the year (and the only game that anyone's given a crap about for the most part, especially sales-wise), and that's your hated ME3. Its already in the running with the reviews being so high.
