God Of War IV Retail Box Says The Game Is A "Shooter"
There could be so many things wrong with this...and yet, it's just so worth discussing.
In general, retailers have to have a tentative release date in order to take pre-orders for any given title. Sometimes, the date is nothing more than a placeholder but currently, as far as we know, retailers don't even have that for God of War IV.
IGN reader Tyla Daniels has given the Internet food for thought: You can see the screenshot in question right here; it comes from a BT Games location in Johannesburg, South Africa and obviously, it's for the sake of drumming up GoWIV pre-orders. This does make some sense, as many believe the game will be revealed on April 19.
Still, there are a few problems. Firstly, that logo isn't official and has been floating around for a little while now. Secondly, the box says it's a "shooter," which either means Sony made a gargantuan mistake and turned the revered franchise into a FPS, or it's just an error made by the retailer. We're going to have to assume it's the latter. Then again, maybe the whole thing is just a fabrication, which isn't out of the realm of possibility.
Well, we don't have much longer to wait, as April 19 looms large. That's presuming the game Sony has to announce really is the fourth God of War but at this point, it seems quite likely. ...it just really can't be a shooter.

Anyway, just a mistake there made by whoever was in such a hurry to make the mockup so they could take the orders.
Buuuuuutt... we did hear some time ago that Sony Santa Monica was looking for people experience with vehicle combat so maybe you ride chariots and shoot arrows the whole time...jk.

Howzit Deusex.
Ben I think you need to do an editorial on South African gaming, you will find a lot more interresting stuff than GOW as a shooter.
Thanks for showing SA some love tho ;)

I'm not sure why it would be a mistake. Is it truly a mistake or is it just that hard to imagine GoW being anything otehr than an action game?
We need to remember that every game needs to take a step in a new direction at some point. If we didn't, we would still see Link in an overhead view, Mario would still be a sidescroller, and we would have never had horses and lasso's in GTA (Think Red Dead Redemption.)
It's also not fair for us to come to these "the sky is falling" conclusions and call it a mistake or say that it is not a good move by Sony's Santa Monica studio. They have made like 5 God of War's so far and they have all been golden and they have earned our trust as customers. I don't think that development team is going to give you a pos like Homeland or Duke Nukem Forever. (No offense to the ones who actually liked those titles :>)
It's gosh darn God of War. If they turned it in to an third person shooter, first person shooter, RPG, adventure or a puzzle game it would still be amazing and fresh. I would love to have a firearm that is equally as awesome as a chainblade, personally.
I say "Give us a good of war shooter" Then go to work on releasing a new, more traditional God of War on the PS4 to coincide with it's release :)

One it just proves that publishers are idiots and are still trying to get part of the Call of Duty pie. This isn't a new direction for anything other than the sake of trying to increase profits.
I personally think this is just a mistake, or more likely a fake picture to get people all worked up.
But seriously there is absolutely NO good reason for GoW4 to be a shooter other than BS corporate shenanigans.

You may have noticed what happened when even SLIGHT action elements found their way into Final Fantasy. Turning the franchise into all action would be an unforgivable tragedy for 99% of every fan.
You can innovate in a million different ways within any given genre, including action. To change what the game is for the sake of "new" is utterly ridiculous.

Its sad to see the whats happened to the Final Fantasy series. Even more sad that it sold well enough for them to stick with the changes. I wish someone would make a game like DQ8, that was JRPG perfection IMO.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that Kratos is going to be wearing fatigues and carrying an M4 and I think that would be kinda silly, but nonetheless we should let them make what they want to make, support the artists and trust that Santa Monica makes a good product.

My whole complaint with handhelds is that they shouldn't get highly demanded games as stand alones. Case in point, Uncharted is my favorite game series ad seeing Uncharted: Golden Abyss, on the vita and not my PS3 more than makes me a little frustrated. At least they brought the GoW games over, but could you imagine those games if they were developed for the PS3 and not the PSP?
I sincerely hope something like that doesnt happen. I don't think it would but...

especially if you want to dispel the stereotype of handhelds only good for angry birds!
you should give golden abyss a try, its freaking amazing!!!!!
no way you would be able to have the same experience on ps3.
id be cool if they made them for both ps3 and vita, but they wont too costly.
oh what i would give to see gravity rush on the ps3 like it was originally meant to!

There's no way this is possible.
I wish GOW IV didn't exist after GOW III's inexplicably bad ending, but if it's gotta happen I really and truly hope it's not a shooter.
