Sony To Release New Media Device, "nasne," In Japan
It has a strange name but then again, lots of electronics do.
As revealed by multiple sources, including GamesIndustry.biz, Sony will launch a networked home entertainment device in Japan this summer; it will go with networked Sony devices like the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, VAIO PCs, and Sony tablets. That name? It's "nasne."
This media recording and storage device will hold 500GB and it features digital terrestrial and satellite broadcast tuners, and both PS3 and Vita users will gain access to "nasne" via a dedicated application called "torne 4.0," which will ship with the device. Said Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai:
"We are offering a seamless and unique Sony experience through 'nasne,' which serves as a home entertainment hub that connects to Sony's various network products.
'nasne' will give users more freedom to enjoy television in new ways by enabling them to watch programs on various Sony products through dedicated applications. We will continue to offer attractive products and services that inspire customers around the world and spark their curiosity, by further enhancing collaboration within Sony groups."
"Nasne" will be available in Japan on July 19, 2012 and it'll hold a price tag of 16,980 yen (about $210). As of yet, there are no plans to distribute the device in other territories, but that may come in due time.

I think there is some political reason why Sony and other major companies are not bringing in consumer HD recorders. They've been out for years in Japan and some of Europe... I hope they're bringing this over.
Oh I think "Play TV" can't record other than free tv signals, no satellite/digital cable. I think.
Yeah you can get that Hauppage PVR thing that GS is selling but doesn't have built in tuners and you need a PC (no Mac support).

I have been hopping to have the tuners they got in japan and Europe, but of course Sony won't release it here. If they are serious about owning the living-room, they better get their act together and release it here pronto. This with a cable-card slot and DVR capability would be a killer peripheral for the PS3...
