God Of War Ascension: The Ambitious Prequel Is Coming

The new God of War has been revealed and although we have no gameplay just yet, we're totally pumped...Kratos is back!

The trailer below is for God of War: Ascension, which appears to be a prequel to all five GoW titles that have hit the market. In the video, the familiar voice of Titan Gaia explains that we'll be looking at a time in Kratos' life before the rage consumed him. Kratos "would break is blood oath to an unjust God" and "no longer be bound in blood."

Now, it seems the game was on Amazon but may have just recently been taken down again, likely so Sony can officially announce the game (probably in only a few hours time). But meanwhile, we get this hot teaser trailer and, as IGN noted from the Amazon description-

"Join Kratos as he seeks freedom, redemption, and the clarity to avenge his family in the most ambitious God of War adventure in the series so far."

Seems like that GameStop employee might've been right... Anyway, we can't wait to see and hear more!

I'm surprised, too. A prequel, again? While this certainly would be the first prequel on the ps3, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes place over multiple time periods. The ending of gowiii was quite literally a "cliff hanger".

k wait it's a prequel right? just wanna confirm because this article is tagged as "sequel" and even the summary says it's "evidently a sequel" but then the rest is referring to it as a prequel. I'm assuming prequel is correct because even the title suggests Kratos' rise to power.

I just hope there's no contradictions. I mean on the trailer he clearly has chains on his wrists and blades of some sort. May not be the blades of chaos, or Athena, etc... But Kratos didn't start wearing, rather bound by any chains on his wrists until he got involved with Ares. Also will we see Kratos without his white "ashes" on his body?

Well the story isn't entirely original as it sounds like the Kratos we know. But it is quite clever for a prequel. Can't wait! Love Kratos! There is and should never be a GoW with out him!

I was really hoping for another one after I beat God of War III, now I'm pumped for yet another game. It stinks that it won't be out until next year. Some interesting story elements will show up in this one. I don't know if gameplay will remain identical because of the story this time around. Hoping to see some gameplay soon, and maybe get a release date... I'm thinking E3.

Well it would be hard to imagine playing as Kratos without his chains. While the story would be interesting I would imagine it would be dissapointing to play as a dumbed down Kratos.

i kinda feel like the title should be for a vita game! the console gow's have always been numbered lik gow I gow II gow III while the handheld itterations have always had a second name in the title like gow: chains of olympus, gow: ghost of sparta,.......... gow: ascension????? but it did show the ps3 at the end so.....

i think theyd announce the ps4 b4 they announce this as a launch title for that platform. although itd be a great franchise to have for the launch! i really want it to be a vita title. i hope its not gonna be some attempt at some multiplayer garbage!

Starting to just feel GOW is just there so Sony feels secure that a big name is there. Like Halo for Microsoft. There's no depth to hearing an installment is announced with this.

Kara is what turns my head now, not because of how wonderful it looked but the thought that went into it. It's not enough to dazzle me anymore.

Really feeling like most developers are marking time a bit currently. Heavy Rain came and then... Nothing really came out of that zenith yet. Hoping at least some development houses start taking some risks, forget the usual paths and actually create unique stories a bit more. That's not happening right now in gaming. Journey should be the tip of the spear with the current state of technology instead we have... COD...

Couldn't agree more. Thats why I keep my eyes peeled on my PC right now. Lots of unique and innovative indy games coming out on steam. I wish more devs would take some risks.

Although I am excited to play a new GoW as I haven't played a good action game in a while.

Cool trailer and all, but I really, REALLY wanted this to be Heavenly Sword. Words can scarcely express my disappointment.

this will be million times better than Clash of the titans and wrath of the titans combined and I have a feeling that "the last of us" will be wearing that best graphic crown for very short period. Really looking forward to E3 and to see the last of us and this clash

so disappointed its not heavenly sword 2!
this is EXACTLY whats wrong with this industry!
instead of getting something fresh, unique, and something we have not had for a while.
we get things weve had 2 minutes ago!

again why i hate announcements of announcements, all it does is make people so excited so they can be massively disappointed!
case in point!

hope thats not all of the teaser trailer too because that was as vague as they get!
i mean $ony has NEVER been good at advertising their games, worst actually!
but even for their standards that was pretty poor!

I daresay the advertising was quite brilliant. The pay-off was sh*t. They dropped a hint on Facebook and it took off virally with everyone being drawn in. It brought a lot of exposure in a very short time and that is, ultimately, what advertising is all about.

You can find the official release at the PS Blog, but this is all the trailer. More information promised for the 30th. And let's face it, with this announcement, there's no way that we'll be getting Heavenly Sword 2 until at least the end of 2014, if ever... That makes me very sad.

and yes heavenly sword 2, what was wrong with wanting that?
heavenly sword is still one of the best new IPs released this gen!
im still yet to be amazed by a game as much as the last level on heavenly sword did!
my god, such a massive open level, and so many enemies!!!!!
it was a dam side better then GOW3 thats for sure!

I'm wondering what tale they are going to tell? Because ascension would seem like a term used for someone becoming a god or demi god. We have seen his climb to becoming the god of war already.

So would this be his climb through the spartan ranks to becoming a general? If so is the end boss going to be the barbarian king that owned his army?

Will this be before he becomes the ghost of sparta? Maybe thats what he is ascending towards? Also if its way before all of this then he wouldn't really be able to have the chains, so what weapon is he going to use as his main one, a sword/spear and shield? Is he going to have any access to magic?

So many questions!!!! But still really excited about it.

Yea it's being milked because they've released 3 on consoles, in 7 years. By the time 4 hits it'll be 8 years. Also it's a new storyline, I would say they were milking it if they tried to continue where 3 left off, considering they said that trilogy was over.

Don't let your bias for Dante cloud your judgement. The game will be worthy of your purchase.

Although I'm curious who Tod Papy is and why Stig isn't directing it?

There's been 5 solid games and Kratos' story has been told. When they pump out a prequel to a finished story (which can only end one way by the way) then I get suspicious. Now there's no room for the franchise to grow, it just paints itself into a corner and tacks an adventure onto a finished plot.

We already know what happens to Kratos, so inserting a plot just to make some more money is milking.

Because it's stale now, if we are just doing the same thing with Kratos as usual it might as well be an expansion pack.

I'll gladly eat my words if this prequel somehow opens the game up to incredible advancement but I don't see it happening. Do games always have to innovate? no, but franchises must or they become stale.

Personally, I'm not much for GoW's story(like most games). For me, it's all about how insane and over the top the theatrics can be.

So new Kratos or old Kratos or whatever Kratos, if it has me jumping on Titans and doing crazy insane crap it's worth my time. I can get reasonably into the gameplay, though it always feels a little too slow and a little too sluggish between attacks and some maneuvers. It needs a Japanese hand in there to get it the way I like it ;)

Gameplay wise, GoW just hasn't taken hold of me. Granted it shares genres like NG, Bayo, DMC, Castlevania etc., but like Jaffe put it, GoW was never designed to be a simulator like Bayonetta (even though, Bayonetta isn't simulating anything realistically.. but I get his point).

I come and play GoW to be wowed by it's fireworks and then move on.

I probably wont pay full price for this one, but I will aim for a rental come release day.

I think they're milking it because they want to release an actual GoWIV on PS4. Making that a launch title along with Uncharted 4 would be an awesome lineup for a new console and easily get some units sold.

So I suspect this is just a game they figured they should make in between to pass the time. So yeah, they're milking it, but its not gonna be like this forever. Plus, the way they describe it, there might actually be some differences between this GoW and the others. Just gotta wait and see.

I'm kinda excited and disappointed at the same time. I was hoping that it would be a brand new story, about (preferably) a brand-new character. If this takes place before he is the ghost of sparta, won't he be significantly weaker, with signficantly weaker weapons, fighting just regular ol' soldiers?

It sounds like it'll be interesting- hopefully they take the game play in a different direction if Kratos is just a regular human solider.

No offense to you, I'm speaking generally here, but I don't like that people want a new character. It was called GoW for a reason, Kratos became the GoW. Making a GoW game with a new character who wouldn't be "the god of war" makes no sense.

In all honesty there should be no more GoW games with out Kratos. He made the series what it is not only by popularity but, the game was completely based around him.

bigrailer, what you have to understand is that there are many many Gods of War in the various mythologies out there and a fresh character with his or her own story revolving around that with a setting in a new mythological world is exactly what this series needs in my opinion.

Big- I get where you're coming from with the GoW games being "Kratos' games", but as World has stated, Kratos' story has been told. And there have even been 2 prequels to sequence how he became the God of War, etc. I'm really interested in what they do with Ascension because it seems like it'll be less "Greek Gods", more "300-type battles" but it does seem like they're spreading it pretty thin at this point.

I was hoping for a brand new story in a similar or same setting (think his brother, or even one of the Gods as the main character). People have also been drawing comparisons to Norse mytholodgy which I think would've been awesome. I'm not willing to write off the game without knowing almost nothing about it just yet. I only hope it brings something new to the series.

The only thing I am wondering about is what are they holding in their hand for E3? We all know that secrets aren't the easiest thing to keep in this age of connection, but Sony has tried, over the past several E3 events, to keep a couple of secret reveals. I hope this year is no different and they have some neat goings-on to surprise the industry with.

They're probably just making this to pass the time so that when they do make GoWIV, they'll be able to release it as a launch title for PS4.

But at least it sounds like they're gonna try something different with this one. Even though Kratos' story is being stretched way too thin. Hopefully with #4 they finally get a different protagonist. But once again, only time will tell.

Finally another god of war game on ps3. After looking at what they have achieved with their first game on ps3, its orgasmic to think about how good the game will be.But i only have one small gripe, after playing the best boss battles in the series (or maybe the best ever) in god of war 3,i find it almost impossible for them to top that. I am not complaining but when you look at that there is no way they can top posidon, hades and cronos.They were ultimate bosses (gods and titans).This being a prequel can't have that epic boss fights.However i am hoping that they prove me wrong.
