GameStop Selling 160GB PS3 For $199
Update: Sony has confirmed with us that this is merely a GameStop promotion. So that's that.
Original Story:
The last time Sony dropped the price of the PlayStation 3, they enjoyed the benefits of the ensuing sales surge for many months. Still are, really.
Might they be prepared to do it again? A few readers emailed us this morning, pointing us in the direction of the 160GB PS3 listing at GameStop.com. As you can see, the price has fallen today to $199, which is $50 cheaper than the normal $249.
Of course, it could just be a sale, but this retailer so rarely does hardware sales... Might it be an indication of the future? Is GameStop just getting the jump on the official price cut to shift more units? Well, maybe not. The company is apparently trying to shift several PlayStation products, as they're also listing a special PlayStation Vita bundle, which tosses in a free game and carrying case with the purchase of the new portable.
We figure we won't see an official PS3 price drop for some time, but then again... We've dropped a note to Sony to see what they have to say, although we can probably predict the reply...

Keep checking Amazon & sites like it, cause I've seen that "Buy 2 Vita games, get 1 Free" deal 3 separate times so far.
And usually when a site does it, Amazon matches their deal within 24 hours too.
BTW, keep checking inside the forum in the "Gaming Discussion folder, for the thread "Good deal for gamers" because I'll post it, along with other gaming deals) there when I see them.

At a $199 price only the most price conscious consumers will compare against a 360 without an HDD. It should encourage sales across the globe. Especially if it is accompanied by a block buster game or two.

i would love to see a redesigned ps3 at E3, thats one thing $ony really need to do and redesigns always really cause a spike in sales.
so no need to do a price drop, especially since its already cheaper then the vita so that would be shooting yourself in the foot!
just offer new colours or even better a new design in new colours, its not time yet for a price drop.
$ony finally started making a profit on the system and now there going to drop the price?
not a good time to do so especially with such few first party releases coming this year!
if anything the vita needs a price drop, ps3 is if anything too cheap!

Personally, I think it'd be amazing to see a full $50 drop on an entry level PS3 from here on out.
