PSXE Poll Update: PS3 Price Cut Likely For Holiday Rush

With Sony racing to catch up after posting a record loss, many were wondering if the company might drop the price of their flagship console.

But when? Well, we asked the readers and the majority anticipate a price cut towards the end of this year. However, a fair number believe the PS3 will fall in price before the summer is here, and about the same number of people think it won't drop until 2013 or later. For the most part, we don't imagine Sony would want to cut the console's price until the holiday season; if anything, they should consider slashing the price of the new Vita. And speaking of Sony's new portable device, that leads us to this week's poll question:

If you don't have the Vita yet, why? It's perfectly understandable if you're just not into handheld/portable gaming (not everyone is), so maybe that's the reason. Then again, maybe it's the cost, which some view prohibitive, or the lack of games they want to play, or maybe they simply prefer the competition. That 3DS is quite the popular unit, right?

I like the vita. Played it at best buy but its a expensive luxury, one im not willing to invest anytime soon. Im not really in to mobile gaming and my ps3 suits me fine. Ps3 really is at a good price now but a price cut wont hurt sony either if it wants to actually top 360 in NA.

For Sony, a price cut would be prudent... I think Sony needs a good shot in the arm to finally vault past the Xbox360 in total sales. Couple that with a few excellent exclusive releases... and it could very well do it...

Isn't the PS3 already neck and neck with the Xbox360? Anyone know the latest numbers at the moment?

According to sales numbers, Sony sold considerably more PS3s in the first 3 months of 2012 than MS sold 360s. So they may not need a price cut for that trick.

However a price cut to the $199.99 sweet spot would be helpful in the NA market in particular. It might not claw back any significant share from the 360 as such, but it will more than solidify the PS3's ability to sell consoles in good numbers in the US.

Because we have lives outside of gaming and to have a portable gaming device when we should be working, paying attention in class, or whatever it is we are supposed to do outside of gaming. I do not prefer the 3DS, I thoroughly enjoyed the gameboy advance though. Cost is a factor but the only other factor for me is time and having to worry about the battery. I am a college student and I dont need the added temptation of gaming while I'm not at home, so to have a set place to play is ideal and the ps3 is a powerhouse anyway. And to have to start all over in buying new games, memory cards, carrying case so when i do drop it, it doesnt break. This to me is a lot of overhead cost to just game on the move.

As cool as it would be to have a Vita, I just have higher priorities in life right now, such as school, rent, and food; you know the things that if I take care of now will allow me to get the cool handheld gaming units of the future.

Vita is price is fine but its seriously lacking in the game department! As for the 3DS I'll be getting one soon because it does have the games.

Maybe you should loko harder at the games available for Vita? Thought o be fair, the 3DS has had considerably longer on market to develop it's games library.

Seems to me that in addition to bringing Vita specific games to market as quickly as they can, Sony would be well advised to get PS1 classics working on Vita ASAP and widen the range of supported PSP titles as fast as it can.

For the Vita there aren't really much games that interest me at the moment. I do plan to get a 3DS soon cause there's a whole bunch of games I want for it.

ps3 does not need a price drop yet simply because its selling really well at its current price point, and $ony just started making a profit on each unit they make and they dont have many titles coming out this year so they wont be making their money there so they need to be making profits on hardware.
another big problem with a price drop would make the ps3 even cheaper then the vita.
way to shoot yourself in the foot!
the vita SERIOUSLY needs a price drop!
ps3 is fine where it is!

speaking of the vita i traded mine in today.
the reveal of super mario brothers 2 yesterday for the 3DS was the tipping point, and i have not touched my vita in over a month!
so no point keeping something that i wont use, might as well sell it and get something i will!
3DS is HALF AND some the price of the vita too!
comes with a hell of allot more kit too!

Yeah, when you break it down the 3DS is the better buy atm, it's cheaper, has alot more games, has quite a few franchises to draw from, and I think it's backwards compatable?, I know the vita can play psp games, but you've gotta pay for all ur titles all over again? sorry sony, that's just not right.

But please, dont get me wrong, the vita is a sweet piece of hardware, and I think worth the $250 (wi-fi), however as I've said before it's the memory card prices that I hate, way too expensive for the amount of memory you're getting. While the launch games might appeal to some, IMO there isnt a game on the Vita that is worth buying it for, however I'm sure this will change in a couple months time, but they've gotta do something about the price, currently you're spending $350 before taxes if you get a vita and a 32 gig card, far too expensive right now considering you could get any of the latest gen systems for cheaper, and I'm sure they will atleast have a game or 2 you'd be intrested in.

i expected $ony to have a constant influx of games like ninty did, not dump everything all at once and have nothing for months!
as i said before only 2 games we know coming out this year im interested in are resistance and gravity daze.
i already played the latter on my JP unit so i cant see the point of keeping my vita just for resistance burning skies!
so if anything id be wasting money to keep the thing when im only going to use it for 7 or so hours for 1 game then once thats done for nothing!
3Ds games are 10 bucks cheaper too, not much but adds up after a while.
vitas just not worth the expense!
its 200 bucks more for the unit alone, plus 130 for a 32GB card, plus 10 bucks extra per game.
its not worth its money, your paying for a Ferrari and getting a ford!

Yeah, he prolly should have waited to purchase his Vita, or atleast not sold it until a couple months down the road to see what they put out, or plan to put out.

I'm currently waiting for a price drop, and a couple games that intrest me to come out before I consider a purchase.

What Bikersaint said is true, and it's the reason I NEVER buy a console/handheld until atleast 6months-1year+ has passed, it's a good enough time to see what's out, and what is to come, plus you might be able to pick it up for a price drop, or a good bundle deal.

The Vita is not in the same place that the 3DS was at launch, because the 3DS had/has backwards compatibility. (so did the Wii, PS2, several DS iterations)

If I get a Vita, then I have a very select amount of games to choose from. If I buy a 3DS, well, you get the picture, tons and tons of DS games to pick from that are far cheaper than Vita games.

I am in that boat. I don't have a PSP, but there are a lot of PSP games I would love to play. I want a Vita, but I can't justify if when all I am really interested in is Uncharted. Rayman looks good, but I will get that for PS3 due to the multiplayer on that version. Now if Vita was backwards compatible, I could get all the cheap PSP games and play them. (I wish Sony wouldn't charge extra to get your already owned games to be playable on the Vita.)

Also, PS3 had backwards compatability at launch. Same thing would applied to me there since I didn't have a PS2 back then either. (well, still don't have a PS2. I always held out hope they would bring back backwards compatability through emulation, but well, guess that will never happen now. Just picked up Ico Collection because of that fact over the weekend)

Vita does have backwards compatibility, but it is restricted. Not sure why, but it is. Like I said in my post above, Sony would be well advised to get the PS1 classics working on Vita ASAP and to widen the selection of PSP titles that are compatible as well. But personally I didn't buy my Vita for backwards compatibility, it's just a nice to have feature.

Biker... I couldn't have said it better myself. Vita is amazing and i can't wait to see what they will do with the cross play. You are 100% correct in regards to the 3ds. It also was $250 when it first came out. And there was like what... A whole handful of launch titles that released when the console itself released. People are so impatient. I've been having a fantastic time with Uncharted Golden Abyss and i cant wait until gravity rush drops. Oh and lets not forget Resistance as well. I can't wait until E3 this year cuz i think Vita is going to be their main focus. I'm expecting a couple bombs to be announced for the vita. I mean the vita has only been released for a whole 2 months... As we had to do with the ps3... Give it some time.

3DS was $250 at launch and features (as every DS has) low end CPU/GPU components. Nintendo was all over the place with 3DS, even releasing a 2nd thumbstick accessory which could easily have been included in the original redesign of the 3DS from the original DS designs. Then Nintendo jumped on pricing - for various reasons. Give Vita a chance to settle and gain games. But I do anticipate a price cut by the Holiday season, probably October.

If the Vita had been a better mobile device other than games, I definitely would've gotten it. Right now, games are not top priority for me, so knowing that the Vita even lacks a simple browser, I had to look elsewhere to get my mobile needs.

Note that I don't own a smartphone, so I need something that can get my mobile "needs" and "wants" that a smartphone can provide. Even if I did have a smartphone though, I don't think I can spend almost $300 for basically just a "gaming" device, especially if games are not of importance to me outside of the home at the moment. I end up getting an Apple iPod Touch and laptop. My mobile needs are now complete.

If I'm getting the Vita, it would probably take a Gran Turismo AND a good price for the memory cards for me to get one.

I have plenty of trouble keeping up with my PS3 and even PSP games, buying a Vita is expensive on it's own plus to get the games for it. So there's really no reason to jump up and buy one straight away.

I only want to play Uncharted at this point. That would be roughly $500.00 to play one game. I am holding out hope they bring that game to the PS3 eventually.

If it turns out that they ever allow as promised, the ability to play your PS3 games on the go using the Vita, (and if it works well) then I would probably spring for it.

I can tell You guys this if the 3DS was still 249 it wouldn't be selling the way it is now. Price does matter unfortunately. Sure 249 is worth it for the vita to those willing to pay 249 for it. Reason obviously why its not selling well. The 299 vita is obviously expensive and really useless i expect sony to drop that version inevitability.

1st problem is price and 2nd problem is gaming library. If I was a little less out of the hole with money then I would care less about price. 3rd, give me some cool colors and designs. Regardless of this I still plan on getting whenever I get the chance.

I want to get a vita but will need to spend atleast $400 after system accessories and a couple of games and getting $400 is really hard when your a poor college student only working a few days a week.

First...Vita does have backwards compatibility. Secondly... The digital games that you bought for the psp/psp go will transfer over to the vita free fo charge. Third... The games that aren't on the list of bc psp games you can still put on the vita via a ps3 (Peacewalker) and play it. Fourth... I'll say this again... The vita is literally 2 months old here in the US. What console had an enourmous library 2 months after it dropped. I can definitely understand people saying that the price is too much because it is alot of money for a handheld or any gadget for that matter. But to say it doesn't have enough games 2 months after it dropped is just ridiculous to me. Makes no sense whatsoever. I respect everyones opinion but that doesn't really seem like a valid argument. I'm telling you wait a year and see what games they have for it. Now the vita may not be for everyone but it is amazing and i'm sure it's going to impress in the future. "Good things come to those who wait"

Loving my Vita. Its got more games than I have money so I'm not worried about the game drought at the moment.

It's in for the long term. Superb piece of tech.
