Top 5 Sequels We Want To See But Probably Never Will
There are some games that just won't ever happen. It's a sad, depressing fact.
So what are the new IPs (or established franchises) that deserved another effort but never got it? Well, here are our top 5 most wanted sequels that will probably never happen in a million years.
5. The Bouncer 2
Oh, shut up. This game took a lot of unnecessary and undeserved flak when it first showed up, mostly for two big reasons: 1. There was no environmental destruction or interaction (and in a brawler, that's mildly disappointing), and 2. It was short; it could be beaten in only a few hours. But look, the game itself was beautiful and tons of fun, the story was great, and each of the playable characters was distinct and unique. Besides, know what it says on the back of the game box? "Play The Action Movie." And that's exactly what you do...or are we watching 10-hour movies? Anyway, I've always a sequel but...oh well. Gotta go without.
P.S. Dauragon C. Mikado remains one of the most bad-ass characters ever.
4. Lunar 3
For many old-school role-playing fans, the Lunar series touches a soft spot. Featuring gorgeous music, heartwarming stories and likable characters, and a traditional turn-based combat system, these colorful and charming titles really left a mark. Silver Star Story Complete was a little short for an RPG (clocking in at only about 15 hours), but Eternal Blue was nearly triple the length. And remember the way Game Arts used to package their products? So cool. The cloth maps, the little hardcover book, soundtrack, etc. Honestly, if they made another Lunar - with the sprite characters, of course - I'd just be ecstatic. Tears-in-the-eyes ecstatic.
3. Onimusha 5
Still not entirely sure why this franchise fizzled out. One of the entries, Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, was plenty good (as were the others), and even featured French actor Jean Reno as one of the major playable characters. It was a little strange, but it worked. The original title was one of the first fantastic titles for the PS2, and was part of a memorable year in gaming (2001). Of course, if Capcom did another entry today, they'd have to ditch the tank controls; can't have hack 'n slash action games moving like Resident Evil these days. But if they could manage it and give us solid mechanics, I think every action aficionado would welcome a new Onimusha. ...not like it'll ever happen. Can't really be optimistic here.
And who agrees that Onimusha 3 and Final Fantasy VIII are tied for the most awesome game intros in history?
2. Vagrant Story 2
It's still one of the most impressive new IPs to ever grace the video game world, and it's just so sad Squaresoft never did a sequel. In many ways, this hybrid action/RPG made its mark: It featured an incredible story and a very unique combat mechanic that combined real-time movement with standard turn-based mechanics. I still remember being enthralled at experimenting with different weapons, hitting enemies in certain spots and in certain ways, upgrading your weapons and abilities, etc. The atmosphere was really special, too; it had a very original atmosphere and one I think I'll always remember. Of course, Squaresoft is now Square Enix so such games are dead and buried.
1. Shadow of the Colossus 2
I know Fumito Ueda is still working on The Last Guardian (at least, we all hope he is) and that remains one of my most anticipated games of the generation. But in replaying Shadow of the Colossus, I've realized that we really don't see that level of creativity, innovation and imagination as often as we should. The design and implementation of the Colossi in this game was mind-boggling; they tested our problem-solving skills and at the same time, maintained the feel of an intense adventure. To this day, I've found little that can equal the satisfaction level of taking down a few of the more challenging Colossi in SotC. There were 16 in all...why couldn't they just make another 16 for a sequel?
And given the technology we've got now? I shiver at the possibility. But what's the point of pining...? 'sigh'

An HD remake or reboot? Yes please. Xenosaga as well as Xenogears still rank as my favorite Jrpg stories ever told.
Oh, and Highlander you seriously need to get onto playing Xenogears. Without giving too much away I'll give you a boost of inspiration.
Remember the Zohar emulators that Jr. kept in the Durandal? Well, they actually play a role in Xenogears...

It's hard to say if Onimusha Dawn of Dreams is actually part 4 (although it's my favourite), but the lack of a number does make it seem like it's not part of a main entry. It does have Samanosuke though! I would love to see a revamped Onimusha for this gen. It seems like prime material for an action game actually. It's sad Capcom hasn't tried anything with it.
When I play the HD collection of Ico/Shadow of the Colossus I always wonder what they would look and play like in this current gen. It would be epic! I miss the variation that games like that had. A variation that actually made us think! I dislike games that treat us like morons. Game: "Jump over that rubble to proceed!" Me: "No shit! It's a straight corridor with nowhere else to go! Are you indirectly calling me stupid?!"
And alas, a Vagrant Story 2 would bring tears of joy. I played that game so much. I could kill Asura with one combo. I always wanted to achieve Grand Master Breaker rank but that was a little too hardcore for me ;)

I think Onimusha 3 is probably still my favorite opening FMV ever, though Soul Blade was pretty amazing, too, for PSX era.

5. Vagrant Story
4. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (I loved this game and unfortunately Dice and EA just don't see why it was so great)
3. Theme Hospital, Sim City 2000, or Railroad Tycoon II (any of these would count as one for me)
2. Legend of Dragoon
1. Shenmue
I hope any of these have another game made but for the most part I know it is a pipe dream other than Shenmue, maybe.

Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines
That game were an amazing RPG with tons of atmosphere and a very cool setting. To think how a game like that would have been if it were developed on todays hardware.
Too bad it was PC only, so I guess many of you don't know this title. But it was an amazingly good RPG released back in 2004, and the last title before the studio who made it (can't remember their name now) had to close down.
So yeah, if some studio would pick up where they left and made another rpg from that universe I would probably faint in sheer joy.

why would you want a sequel to the game that had 1 level repeated 10 times?
im sorry but i cant see where in the dictionary it describes spending 20 minutes travelling to a boss, spending 10 minutes climbing up, then spending another 10 minutes re climbing up because you fell down because of useless controls, rinse and repeat for a few hours fun.
thats why its not, its under the definition boring and repetitive!
id honestly rather be forced to watch oprah 24 hours a day 7 days a week for the rest of my life then have to play that game again!

I always liked the insane crazy guy I forgot his name, I should go replay that game sometime soon actually.
My personal sequel I really wanted but i'm starting to think we'll never see is Freedom Fighters 2. What upsets me is after the 1st came out they announced the 2nd to come out 2 years later for last gen, then they decided to can it to start work on next gen with Kane & Lynch. They haven't said a peep about Freedom Fighters 2 since then.

Another Dissidia game?
A few key members of the Dissidia team left because Square Enix has been mismanaged by Wada and they have had nothing to work on, so they leave for mobile gaming....
A shame Nomura couldn't get Dissidia 3 greenlit. I imagine it might be a long time or never till the next dissidia.

4 only came about because of the success of the franchise and Capcom forced the team to do a new one.
You could tell too because 4 seemed detached despite it being a great game still. So another Onimusha is very unlikely. It ended on 3.
A sequel to SotC would be counter-prouductive. It was a one time depressing story that is impossible to have a follow up due to it's end....but most of all, because it would go against what SotC is about and completely alter the power of the original.
It wasn't about conquering huge beasts, i felt terrible defeating these huge, gentle-like beasts, they always felt almost friendly or had a non-villain-like atmosphere. They were also made out of bits of land and ancient ruin and that also made it feel conflicting...as if the size was the only thing menacing about some. That combined with the emotional music that plays upon defeat was just furthering my concern and that all became apparent at the end when *spoiler* it's revealed they were made to protect the land and keep the evil god sealed away.
This unbelievable achievement of mixed emotion during gameplay would perish if a sequel was made. A sequel made just so i could battle more "big monsters" with the latest technology = Counter-prouductive.
I agree with Luner and Vagrant Story, though. Vagrant Story would have to be an entirely new story with new characters.

I'd like to see:-
Shenmue 3 (likely)
Legend Of Dragoon 2
A new Team Silent Silent Hill
Shadow Of Memories/Destiny 2
3D Dot Game Heroes 2
Beyond Good And Evil 2 (Yeah, we'll see....)
Dark Cloud 3 (Quite a high chance we will see it)
Rogue Galaxy 2
A true sequel to Tenchu 2 by Acquire
Alundra 3
Arc The Lad
Exhumed/Powerslave 2
Croc 3 (Yeah, that's right!!)
A proper survival horror Dino Crisis 4
Blood 3 with the entire original team
Shadow Warrior 2 with 3D Realms
Eternal Darkness 2 (This is heavily rumoured for Wii U)
Hexen 3
Strider!
Shadow Of The Beast lV (I know it concluded with lll back in '92, but for nostalgia at least!)
Primal Rage 2
Gods 2
ESWAT 2
Ok, now i could go on forever...

It's a crime many games stopped, i could of lengthened that list greatly.
Ben, then it shouldn't be in your list considering what you said about Heavy Rain (which applies more so to SotC) / say that then.

1) Heavenly Sword. I thought that Ninja Theory had some interesting ideas for the sequel. The first will always have a special place in my heart.
2) Drakan 3. I have a kind of a love affair with Drakan: The Ancient's Gates. It's one of those games I'll go back and play every so often when there's a dry season in new releases.
3) Ring of Red. Tactics-based strategy and big clunky diesel-powered mecha! It's a good setting, and there was something about the "must make every shot count!" style of gameplay that I thought was really compelling.
4) Front Mission. You know, back to the real Front Mission, not that ill-fated hybrid they tried on us a couple years back. And a release of FM5 in the U.S. would be much appreciated.
5) Final Fantasy Tactics. I put it on here with trembling fingers. It ranks as one of the greatest games of all time in my book, but I'm not sure if I actually trust today's Square to make a sequel.
