"Megatron" Edges Cam Newton For Madden 13 Cover

It was a fight to the finish but in the end, the Detroit Lions finally get a player on the cover of a Madden game.

Nearly 20 million votes were tallied during this year's ESPN fan vote for the new cover athlete, and in the end, Detroit wide receiver Calvin Johnson pulled out the win, just beating Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton.

It has been one hell of a year for "Megatron." He signed an 8-year deal with the Lions that could be worth up to $132 million, which makes him the highest paid player in the NFL. And now he lands on the cover of Madden NFL 13, which is quite the honor and well-deserved. Of course, Detroit fans are hoping the "Madden Curse" doesn't totally ruin their 2012 campaign; if Johnson is hurt, that means the team's chances at a playoff run are, for all intents and purposes, shot. But hey, that curse is just a bunch of hooey, right? ...right?

Well, just stay healthy, Cal.

Lived in Michigan my whole life and have always been a lions fan even through the loss streak! lol. They are a well put together, strong team now and god forbid if the madden curse is real and ruins the one shot they've had in forever!

As a Lions fan, I am happy Calvin won (he is a great person on and off the field) but yeah the whole curse thing... Well Ben, I am pretty sure Barry Sanders was on the cover in 2000, so Calvin is #2 for the Lions.

Not a Lions fan but I like Megatron so I don't want anything bad to happen to him. Plus I may pick him up for my Fantasy Football Team.

Man this is good and bad..even as a Chiefs fan I like what Megatron does for the Lions. Dude is a flat out beast of a receiver. This is bad b/c that damn Madden curse is continuing it's streak.

not anymore... screw the "curse" there were many times last year when Megatron was hit in midair (once by two people) and I said there was no way he was getting up... and he did... I'm not worried.... go LIONS!

I'm glad to see CJ make the cover, Ben Wallace got on the cover of NBA 2k5, Justin Verlander is on the cover of MLB 2k12 and now CJ is on the cover of Madden. PS @Mike Rlz I think Pavel Datsyuk is still alive to make the cover of NHL 13. For fellow Lions fans remember nothing happen to Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald.
