PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Official
Once again, the rumors have been proven true.
Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has announced PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, in development at SuperBot Entertainment and scheduled to arrive for the PlayStation 3.
Dubbed the "ultimate four-player brawler," the most iconic characters in the PlayStation universe will throw down in invigorating combat; expect the likes of Kratos, Sweet Tooth, Fat Princess, Parappa, Colonel Radec, Sly Cooper along with many recognizable characters from some of the best third-party franchises around. So...Dante and Ezio, anyone? Said SCEA Senior Vice President of Marketing Guy Longworth:
"PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale delivers a veritable encyclopedia of PlayStation's rich gaming history. This game is a celebration for fans of PlayStation and we are excited to deliver the most comprehensive brawler available."
Players will be able to fight "in a variety of configurations," including versus matches for four, team battles, and special practice modes. When online, we'll face a new set of challenges, and that includes Tournament Mode, Special Event Battle, and Custom Matches. The environments on display and the music that will grace our speakers come straight from the "rich and varied history of PlayStation titles."
Yeah, it's Super Smash Bros. for the PlayStation brand, but hey, there's nothing wrong with that.

just think of it this way
super smash bros has had three iterations: the self titled first game, melee, and the most recent entry, brawl.
now each one of those games has been on a different console, with radically different controller set-ups. this provides no cohesive system of executing commands in the game because its always so different.
yes, the respective button commands may be the same in some cases, but the location of the said button always varies, leading to a adjustment period in which you get owned by a more familiar player
so unless you are a nintendo gamer that has all three consoles (with their respective titles) then there's no way somebody who plays playstation or xbox and has only casually played this game (or one of the others) at a friend's house can easily pick up SSB and play it with someone who is a veteran player, and not get the crap beaten out of them.
with a more approachable control set-up, you open it up to everyone

for example
someone who hasn't played the wii, but is very adept at either the gamecube and/or n64 SSB games. the minute they play brawl they are instantly thrown into the heat of the game with a completely different, and might i add very unconventional controller

You look at FF Dissidia even, that had a great cast of characters and FF tributes enough for any FF fan to pick up and play . I just don't see this reaching the same charismatic value.

I trust that characters like, Jak, Ratchet or Clank, and others will make it into the game.
I personally would like spike from Ape escape. His throw could be catching people in his net and whipping them across the map. Also Dart from Legend of Dragoon would be sick too.

Just try to imagine it like comparing fighting games like Tekken and Soul Caliber. They're both fighting games with 3D graphics and with nearly the same camera view. The only differences are the characters and movesets. This game is like that to SSB. But honestly yes lol, it really does look nearly the same as SSB, but for sure the characters, levels, and moves aren't.
And yes, Crash got to make it!

I guess if you dont have a N64, GC, or Wii, then this game might seem like a good thing, even though I pity you if you dont because your missing out out some of the best games, but I still say if u want SSB, go buy it.
@Fabi
This gen, it seems to me sony is just in copy/pasty mode, if something on another console does well, sony wants to get in on it, and this is just another example of it. O, I'm sorry, did u want another example? *cough* Move *cough*. I think that's what bothers me the most about this game, hell, who knows, it might end up being an ok fighting game, but it will always fell like a cheap SSB ripoff.

So they also said there will be some third party developer characters.
Wouldn't it be cool if they had the 'Souls' series warrior or pyromancer and maybe the Origami Killer from Heavy Rain? Lol... It'll never happen tho :P

Know what I mean?
There are lots of Playstation characters I still want to see. Some PS1 jRPG characters, please!
The HERO from Dragon Quest 8 would make a great Playstation version of Link. lol... seriously! Sword, shield, boomerang, magic... has a spear as well, for an extra add-on.

Why is it that people say this; "so far all it screams out to me is Smash Bros rip off. "?
It's a mash-up brawler, so is Smash Brothers. So, does Smash Brothers own the concept of a brawler? Do they own the concept of a mash-up? Do they own the concept of 4-way play?
Sorry, I don't see the problem here, 4-way play, brawling fun. That's all. So if you're Sony, and you make a brawler, why not use all your iconic characters and mascots to being in the fans? OK, so it's not a unique concept, but then there are not many unique concepts in video games in any case, are there? Most games have their roots in games from 20 years ago and are really evolutions of those concepts with more modern technology.
You know what I would like to see? A top down, w-way action game featuring all the same Sony iconic characters working their way through level after level of adventure and treasure hunting. Kind of a Sony All-Stars meets Gauntlet. "Sackboy needs food, badly...", "Kratos is about to die...", "Cole Mcgrath shot the food!",... Much retro fun to be had.

That said though, Sony's characters and world are very much diverse and different than Nintendo's so that alone is probably enough for this game to be its own kind.

I love God of War, so when Dante's Inferno and Castlevania:LoS was announced I was stoked. I didn't say "That game sucks cause it's a ripoff". Super Smash Bros. is a fun game. So why wouldn't people want more games like it? Time to grow up people.

Wasn't really responding to you or anyone one in this thread in particular. I've just read a lot of BS on internet and we know nothing about the game yet. Just want people to realize every game barrows from another directly or indirectly. I think Dante's Inferno is a prime example. There is always room for more good games in the same genre.
@everyone
So what if it is like Super Smash Bros.? Is that a bad thing if you like Super Smash Bros.?

4-way play has been around in various games since before Gauntlet even. Brawlers are not exactly new either. I'm sorry, but this isn't a case of criticizing Nintendo, I'm simply pointing out that the game play in a 4 way brawler is not really earth shatteringly innovative. Even if this game combines several elements that are similar to a game on another platform, it no more makes it a clone or copy than one FPS being like another FPS makes either a copy of the other.

@Dustinwp, Gotcha. I know too many Nintendo fanboys are having a seizure. I'm thrilled as a Nintendo fan. I love Smash Bros. Now I can play it with my favorite Sony characters. :)

This ridiculous idea that Sony just "always" steals from Nintendo has always been false; just another silly claim from the Ninty fankids. I'm sorry, but while there are examples, in terms of gaming overall, Sony is the one making strides in interactive entertainment. Not Nintendo. Gimmicks don't count. Evolution and innovation do, and Nintendo hasn't really done either for a long time.

Power stones and SSB are similar games, you have items that drop down from the sky, four player brawling, floaty jumps and interactive maps. But your right in that they play differently, this is largly due to one being 3D and one being 2D.
But I think you were saying that All-stars is heavily influenced by SSB which I do agree, I think some people interpreted that as you calling it a clone/rip off or not good for some reason.

It was just like Super Smash Bros, though in 2D form with a slightly larger map (in terms of scrolling by the screen when moving), allowed up to 8 players (4 vs. 4) and featured character customization in terms of looks and stats.

Also, my excitement for this game has officially skyrocketed. I've always wanted something like this on a Playstation console.

I originally liked the idea, but I am envisioning myself playing it, and let's say I am playing as Cole. I have to face a Raccoon thief?
Ok, I am not going to bury this thing totally until I see it in action. But, these are not iconic characters in the same mold as Link, Mario, or even Kid Icarus. Adults play SSBB for the nostalgia, and kids play it cuz it's fun.
I had my hopes up for something like a Golden Eye 4 person multiplayer where you have serious characters with their own abilities playing on maps unique to all their franchise games. Give me Cole, Kratos, Dante, Ezio, Nate (ok, he will be at a disadvantage =)), maybe throw in a Big Daddy from Bioshock.
They probably didn't go that direction since that concept has been done to death, but it would be fun to be Kratos or Cole scaling the buildings of Rome chasing after Ezio.

"So hey have you heard about Sony's version of Super Smash Bros.?"
"Nah... what is it?"
"It's Playstation All-Stars Battle Royal!!"
"Playstation All-Stars.. what?"
In this day and age, we like to shorten what we say, and there is absolutely nothing I can think of to shorten this one. PASBR? Title Fight, or Playstation Title Fight seems more straight forward and less cheesy. Previously, "Heroes on the Move" seemed better than the final name, "Playstation Move Heroes." Sony's getting a bit cheesy with these title names... of course, imo.

All these announcements are making people wonder just what will Sony reveal at E3 this year. Just like last year they announced big titles prior to the show. With all this activity the probability of a 2012 E3 PS4 reveal just went below 5%.
Imagine... Big Kaz takes the stage to announce "PLAYSTATION ALL-STARS: VITA" with FULL Cross-Platform functionality with PS3. If he doesn’t do I will so if PSAS: VITA is not already in development then SONY will have no choice but to make it happen because an announcement like that would create BUZZ of Epic Proportions!

Do you believe that really? Do you mean it in a way that you think it will be a system seller? When I hear "boon for the PlayStation Brand", to me means that it will really push the brand forward. I don't see how this game could do that.
To me, this just seems like it will be a fun title, that will be lucky to sell 500,000.
Playstation Move heroes sold a little over 100,000 I believe.
Maybe there is a thirst for this type of game that you see, and I just don't. In no way do I represent the gaming populous, but I think it could be somewhat fun for a bit, however I tire of these types of games quickly.

My statement comes from Sony's perspective. If they handle this property properly it can and will make their characters more visible in this ever expanding gaming industry. Opening the audience of all titles to each other. Also if a VITA version is announced SONY can really say that they are living up to the Cross Platform Gaming feature. Imagine having a quick match with up to 3 opponents located anywhere on the planet on a PS3 or VITA all while on a bus or train ride or just sitting in the park. You know, all the things the VITA is made for.
Maybe I should have said the this game "MAY" be a boon instead of "will" be. It all depends on what Sony does with the property. Particularly if the 3rd party support is healthy.

this is EXACTLY why $ony has not posted a FY profit for years!
stupid decisions like this.
i wish $ony would stop trying to steal a piece of nintys pie its NEVER going to happen!
there in the mindset that hey ninty is releasing all these kids games and are making a mint so if we make them we will make a mint too.
WRONG!
ninty is making a mint of these kids games because that is what they have been doing since the companies creation!
ninty is known for kids games, $ony is known for the opposite!
going to $ony for kids games is like going to ninty for GOW!
ninty would NEVER release a game with scenes half as graphic as GOW!
$ony need to stop being so god dam greedy, be happy with what they have, and bring back some old franchises their fans might actually want!
something the majority of their fans will want, not something 0.0000000000000000001% of their fans want!
how did medievil moves dedmunds quest sell?
how did that fitness game sell?
how did ape escape for the move sell?
how did playstation move heroes sell?
how did R&C all for one sell?
poorly?
hmmmmmmmmmmmm, i wonder why!!!!!!!!!!
this is whats REALLY pissing me off with $ony this gen!
they cancel amazing looking games like 8 days, the getaway 3, heavenly sword 2, awesome projects that their fans would love and would push the industry forward!
things they SHOULD be doing, things that will make them a good profit get canned!
things that will sit and gather dust like facebook, twitter, crappy kids games, things that will make them the smallest profit get front row centre.
no wonder there bleeding money like a asian dude in a quentin tarantino film!
its, its almost like $ony WANT to go bankrupt!
