Activision Formally Announces "The Most Ambitious CoD Ever"

The debut trailer is already here, and now we've got the official press release.

Set in the year 2025 in what is called a "21st Century Cold War," Call of Duty: Black Ops II boasts advanced weaponry, robotics, and drone warfare, along with "new graphics technology," branching storylines and non-linear missions for the single-player campaign. In short, "the most groundbreaking and visceral" CoD experience yet.

This is no joke. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg calls this new entry "the most ambitious Call of Duty ever." His statement is bold and plenty encouraging:

"We are bringing disruptive innovation to the franchise and we are doing it on several fronts. We're pushing the boundaries technologically, graphically, and from a narrative and gameplay perspective. At the same time, we need to stay true to the epic realism, authenticity, heart pumping adrenaline, and cinematic action that so many people love and expect from a Call of Duty game. Treyarch's vision for Call of Duty: Black Ops II will redefine the Call of Duty franchise for the future--both literally and figuratively."

Treyarch boss Mark Lamia added that Black Ops II will deliver something fans of the franchise "have never seen before." He says we should expect a solid and entertaining campaign, which will feature a "thought-provoking story" and even a few "meaningful choices" that should affect the outcome (a little RPG goodness, eh?). As for the multiplayer, Lamia says it will embrace "all skill levels and play styles," which should expand the already vast reach of the franchise's online appeal. Finished Lamia:

"With Call of Duty: Black Ops II, we're all in and we won't rest until we've launched nothing less than the best Call of Duty we've ever made."

It doesn't take much to make it the most ambitious Cod though.

Well now... those are some statements regarding CoD! Roll on hype machine, but will it look and play better than Killzone 3.

Killzone 3 is my bench mark for shooters. If Activision are proporting that a new engine is in the offing, then just maybe, they will have something I am interested in.

With Dust514 coming out, and the next Battlefield to be announced, there is still much disruptive competition for CoD... therefore it is going to have to be something very very special indeed...

Q!

Ummm, you could just go to the games web site to find out. Its an MMO FPS with direct interaction between Dust players and PC players on Eve online. Its not out yet but the closed beta that finished up a few weeks ago. The game has had plenty of previews and editorials on other sites.

I know similar things have been said b4 but this has got me pretty excited. If they add meaningful and progressive changes to the series, it may rekindle the fire for some disgruntled fans

Meaningful choices? CoD players could think that choosing between a shotgun or a machine gun is a meaningful choice.

On one hand, I don't want to get this because they seriously need to update the game engine, but on the other hand, even with the criticisms, it's a lot of fun to play. Decisions, decisions....

That's how it goes these days... Developer announces a new game and the very next day they say that *enter game name here* is their most ambitious game yet... Of course if they said "this game isnt as good as the last one" who'd buy it right?

I was just wondering why do they even need to hype it, it will outsell everything (combined) anyway

Wringing every last drop out of a 5 year old game engine isn't exactly pushing technology.

7 year engine I think. Pretty sure its a heavily modded version of the CoD 2 engine. But it gets confusing when you read about it. Because apparently it started out as a heavily modded Quake 3 engine...which just blows my mind.

I highly doubt that. Call of Duty 4 will forever be king of Call of Duty series.

Yea CoD4:MW is one of the best shooters this generation, I'd go as far as one of the best games this generation. So yea that'll be tough to top. If they do it, then the consumers win. But nobody would admit to that, I don't think.

While call of duty can use a new refined engine, the same old one still looks good.

It does look good. It definitely still looks better than a lot of games that release. But it goes without saying, it's well past time for a new one. It would make the games better in more ways than one.

Maybe they can afford to license Epic's Unreal 4 engine next time for what's left of Infinity Ward to work with.

I get the odd feeling that xbox was in the driver seat of this latest incarnation....it basically looks like halo had a bastard child with black ops and produced Blops2. Having been an avid player of all previous COD games this one is just....well...it completely misses the mark. MW3 is a regurgitated lazy piece of work and paired with ELITE it is just plain pathetic. From prestige badges to just blanket ricochet it had "we just don't give a crap anymore" written all over it. I had high hopes for a Black Ops 2, but watching that clip was like a kick in the stomach. Change is good, don't get me wrong, but to completely step out of the box and into a dirty kitty litter box....not good and that's exactly what it appears Treyarch/Activision has done.
