Blizzard: "We See Diablo As An Inherently Multiplayer Game"

Still no word on exactly when Diablo III is coming to consoles, but the headlines are everywhere, as the PC version launches next week.

One of the more interesting developer quotes comes from a recent interview in which game director Jay Wilson talks about sticking with the "old-fashioned" isometric camera, and the concept of Diablo as "an inherently multiplayer game." First, concerning the camera:

"Very early on in the process we had some people who argued that we should not make the game isometric, that it would be better technology, more modern, if we made a third or first-person game. I really would have nothing of it. For me a camera is not a technology choice, there's more than enough first and third-person games out there."

We really couldn't agree more. Wilson added that he didn't think the level-up process should be the core appeal; rather, it's more about the "acquisition of items." Lastly, he addressed the controversial issue of always-online DRM, which has been the focus of quite a few arguments in recent months. Said Wilson:

"We see Diablo as an inherently multiplayer game. There were a lot of issues with Diablo II where players would play offline and never realise the game had an online component, which felt wrong to us."

I certainly remember playing Diablo II mostly with friends, although I admit I had a lot of fun playing by myself, too. I'm a little surprised to hear the new title be described as "inherently multiplayer," but maybe I shouldn't be.

If it is handled anything like Skyrim was handeled on ps3 i would not even bother for a console release if it only worked on one console and not all of them.

My only problem with online only is what happens when your internet goes down? My canadian ISP goes down now and again, and while its not that often its still a factor. I remember during the open beta weekend all day saturday my internet was screwing up and it was terrible. Friday Blizzards end couldn't handle the flood of new players, however that is expected as I'm sure that was the reason for the open beta.

Its nice to be able to log in and play without being constantly connected. If there is a hickup with your internet you get booted which in an addictive loot driven game like Diablo 3, well lets just say it can lead to frustration. Sadly thats the reason I cancelled my preorder, Torchlight 2 is cheaper and allows for modding offline play and LAN.

However its a better form of DRM than a lot of other companies have tried. I will pick it up eventually but I don't want to support the model so I will wait.

Online-only for a game like Diablo III is rubbish - if it has a SP mode (which I understand it has), then online-only DRM is a pain in the rear. Just like Xenris says, if you have a bad run with your internet, then seeya later, you can't play the game. I'll wait 'til console, and in the meantime give Torchlight I & II a run. Very much against always-connected DRM for games that aren't online-only (ie, for MAG or Team Fortress 2, no probs, as being online is necessary to play). But I sometimes like to play offline, and at other times I'm compelled to by technology!

I want this on the PS3 so bad! I haven't had a blast with loot grinding since Borderlands and before that it was Diablo 2!

Hey Palp did you try Sacred 2? It has a good loot system and is kinda reminiscent of an older Diablo. I had my find valuables stat over %200 and had a blast just grinding for armors. I have helped dozens of new players by giving them set pieces sometimes full sets too. I still like playing it from time to time.

and forcing them online fixes that?
online DRM is the WORST thing to happen to this industry EVER!
especially if your like me and have a crappy 2 dollar router because its provided by your ISP and cant change it so its constantly resetting itself every 3 seconds!
not to mention the cables are so god dam old whenever we get 1 drop of rain the internet drops out.
because of this bull sh*t DRM in not buying any more blizzard games.
i dont pay 100 bucks for my games so i can sit there having them look pretty not being able to play them because the nets down!
way to turn off a large portion of your fanbase blizzard!

I think I am going to wait for the CONSOLE version of this game. I like to play games like this solo too. I have a feeling they will make the game for solo players on consoles anyways.

End of Line.
