PSXE Contest: So You Think You Can Review Video Games
Yeah, we know. Every avid gamer in existence thinks they can do it. Well, if you're one of many who claim they could do what every professional critic does, now you're chance to make good.
We are hosting an ongoing contest/giveaway that will give gamers everywhere across the US the opportunity to earn both experience and prizes simply by writing game reviews. And the victors will not be determined by us; rather, they will be selected by your peers.
It's really very simple-
1. Write a review for a game (any game), sign up for the site, head into your User CP, amd submit it.
It can be any length you choose, and you can tackle the analysis however you see fit. Your review must pass through an approval on our end, but that's only for spam purposes; we will not edit your review in any way. So if there are misspellings and errors, that's on you.
2. Every Sunday night, we will select the 10 best User Reviews and place them in our weekly poll (on the right of the main page). If there were less than 10 submitted during the week, all will go into the poll. That's where our role ends; then it's up to the community to determine the very best user review. We've got a sharp group, by the way...
3. The winning user review will be highlighted in our "PSXE Poll Update" (also posted on Sunday), and it doesn't end there. You're more than welcome to keep submitting. And if you keep gaining the approval of the community, you will be in line for free games and other goodies. Whatever I've got available from publishers might be coming your way...
Lastly, as we move forward, the best review writers will have the chance of submitting guest reviews to our site, to be published as a real review, which will likely pop up at Metacritic, GameRankings, etc. So maybe you're in college and looking into getting some experience for game journalism, or maybe you've always said to yourself, "Hey, that's something I'd like to do." Well, here you go.
And at the end of the year, an even bigger prize might be lurking for the best of the best...
The only rules are that you must be 18 years of age or older and you must be a US citizen. And feel free to join the community and vote alongside your fellow competitors; it's all about fair play and admitting that maybe, just maybe, there are other people on the Internet who can write a better video game review than you. ;)
Have fun!

lol You and me both man! In the middle of writing I'd think about how great everything's coming together, after submitting it I think about how much I regret it! Almost like that scene in 'A Christmas Story', where Ralphie writes about the bb gun for his class paper and everyone's congratulating him on such a well thought out paper. But in reality, it was C+ worthy! lol

Calling my wife's cousin a liaison might actually make him feel pretty cool. I might do that.
But again, I'm not convinced I would win. I don't have as much time as I did last time the site had a competition for user reviews. Last time we had a competition, I submitted like 6 reviews in one week. lol!

im not going to enter, I have no need.. but if someone of non US citizenship wants to write a review for this site and wants to leave the prizes behind, you and AK should allow them to do so.
if people want to get in to the biz of writing and is using this as a stepping stone then 'prizes' are not the focus here.
I say unless there's another reason that hasn't been explained, this offer to write for the site in a 'user' capacity should be opened up to everyone and the prize should be that they are in print. its hard enough to get in to the industry, so this isn't a bad way.
Ben, I like your stuff, I agree with most of your writings, but I miss AKs input, I miss another opinion. we share our opinions in the forum, and for me its all about freedom of expression and choice, which is something that I believe PSXE has lost sight of on the main page since its been a one man bad with you as the drummer, guitarist, lead vocals and bass. that's no slight on you, I trust you can see what im saying.
I believe we need new blood, but im not talking about paid staff, as that has its own issues. im thinking if people want a foot hold in this and want to impress with their reviews then PSXE should let them, explore the user review avenue, it will be healthy for the site, and who knows? you might find a real gem in the making.
But i can guarantee you that if this is only open to the states than you will be missing out on so many talented writers out there. I personally think that a rethink and tweak of this whole idea is in order.

And the constant implication that the forum is this bastion of open discussion and the main site has "lost sight of freedom of expression and choice" isn't even remotely close to accurate. I wonder how people who basically never participate here and apparently avoid the site seem to know so much about it.
I don't even know what you're complaining about. You want more opinions? This will get you more opinions. Of course it explores the user review avenue, that's what this IS. It's a giveaway at the same time; we never do giveaways outside the US because it's a colossal pain in the ass.
I really don't see the problem. You may notice others, including those outside the US, don't see the issue, either.

But I do agree that Ben running things alone pigeonholes the site and its topics, stifling possible growth that isn't fully dependent on the community.

what I am saying is that although you are but one man with one opinion with which you write well and you speak well and you are a good reviewer, but you are just one man. just one.
PSXE imo should never become a one man site. and that is my "no slight on you" comment, because its not that you're wrong, or have done wrong its just that most people do like other opinions, there is nothing wrong with that.
if you hate/ love a game, I would like to also read maybe another review or angle where someone might have a difference of opinion, where it might be as well written as yours, and as detailed.
No man is always right about everything, no one man can speak for everyone, this is why we need more reviewers.
imo this main page isn't as open as you may think, you form an opinion and people comment on it, thats it... I would like to see new opinions, maybe ones that you yourself could comment on rather than be its author, I like having discussions, but when the discussion is you upholding your opinion while others agree or disagree with you, I feel that it would be nice if there was a change.
that is all that I was saying. so im agreeing with you about this process that PSXE is offering, just not about only letting people in the states write.
as for me complaining, I would like to think that you know me, seeing as I have been here for a while now, and that I dont 'complain' about much. i usually sit quietly and watch and form an opinion, but when i see that there's an opportunity that just isn't being fully recognised, I sometimes have to have my say, so dont feel that im having a pop at you, im not.
I think you have done a fantastic job at what you do, its not easy.. but I do think that it could be easier on you and for you to focus on pushing this site forward in other directions if you weren't always the one man band.
as for people outside the US not thinking its an issue that you consider it a pain to include them, notice that the ones who have expressed that they cant join in but would like to are long term front page dwellers, no they're not going to up and leave, but you also cant say that they dont care either, looks like they want to write plus they like it here at PSXE and so I think could add real value..
and then theres all the people who read but dont join up too...
my opinion is this: we need great reviewers and great writers. The people interested in writing just for a free game, forget them, theyre a waste of time.
Offer this to everyone and offer a possible slot, unpaid of course, but with certain royalties that PSXE can afford to give out. you know there's game expos in all manner of countries these days, games that are out in the EU or JP before the states too, there's people outside the states that can add value and use PSXE as a stepping stone for their own gain, I see nothing wrong in scratching backs. this way you will get people who are passionate about what they do for the right reasons.
..erm, and thats all i have to say :)

There are plenty of additional sites one can check out if you need differing reviews. I for one enjoy the GameSpot video reviews for example. The web is open, and PSXeXtreme has been open pretty much from the start...
Don't see much of an issue... can't say much more!

It might not matter since I probably won't ever win anyways, but is it cool if I participate if I have a relative that lives in the states?
I'm not a US citizen, but if by some miracle I won, I would have a US address to send to, so no customs or funny business!
