Jenova Chen: Sony Has A "More Artistic And Adult Taste"

When it comes to artistic, original games, you can't go wrong checking out the PlayStation Network.

And in general, it seems that many gamers consider the PlayStation platform to cater to a more mature audience when compared to the Xbox platform. That argument could quite literally go on forever, but Thatgamecompany boss Jenova Chen made his opinion abundantly clear during a recent VentureBeat interview.

"Sony has a more artistic and adult-focused taste. They care about how grown-ups feel toward their games."

Chen has been responsible for some of the games that would qualify in his argument, as flOw, Flower, and Journey have all been tremendously well-received and cater towards the more adult, cerebral participant. Chen took his stance one step further by saying that the PSN user "is more likely to be interested in artistic games" when compared to the Xbox and Wii fanbase.

PlayStation Home boss Jack Buser echoed Chen's sentiments:

"Our primary PSN audience is indeed more adult, and many of our best-selling titles appeal to this demographic. Many PlayStation and PSN games have themes that require a user to think and feel about a deep, immersive gameplay experience, and we see that exemplified in the success of titles like Flower, Journey, and Heavy Rain. Titles like these can only be found on PlayStation, and our users enjoy the emotional and thematic sophistication of their games, especially with our digital offerings."

I could say something to back these guys up, but of course, that would be viewed as biased. Needless to say, however, there's a reason why many PlayStation fans often consider their platform of choice to be a step above in terms of maturity.

Well of course. Nintendo is for kids. Xbox is for teenagers and kids. Playstation is for kids, teenagers, and adults.

Just to set the record straight. I believe nintendo's the only one out of the 3 whose main focus is E for everyone. It is all in the name/quotes they have been saying ever since this whole thing started. It is even in the systems name. Wii sounds like we which emphasis that it is for everyone.

I know I am on a Playstation site, but it is hard to resist when it is blatantly wrong...

@Coffeya
it's called marketing. It doesn't mean the Wii actually does cater to everyone. I don't know any late teens/young adults who like the Wii.

Heavy Rain and Alan Wake both sold over two million copies. Just goes to show that story driven single player games can rake in good numbers.

Obvi...if you don't own a PS3 you're an uneducated immature caveman who doesn't like to think.

Biased comments like that, will make others wonder who the real non-thinking caveman is. There's lots of reasons why some people don't own one system or another. Doesn't mean it gives you the right to call them all slack jawed yokels.

And I think you owe an apology to all cavemen everywhere...

It seems the only sarcasm forum members can catch is the kind they generate.

Ah, then my apologies, once again, sarcasm and the Internet...they just never seem to mix well.

And wow, Ben you posted just ahead of me....I had to re-edit my post. But I thought you guys had called an end to the forum wars and buried the hatchet. Didn't mean to re-open old wounds....sorry..
This has nothing to do with me posting here or in the forums, and I didn't comment on it just to start an argument. I just saw a post that had a negative connotation to it, and commented on it. And now I have apologized for not seeing the sarcasm in it, which I was not the only one.

Lol, I'm 0 for 2 ....didn't we used to say j/k or something at the end of those...lol. Goes to show, I've been busy and away for too long....I'm going to have to take the time to relearn everyone's personalities all over again. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go remove my feet from my mouth so I can go eat some crow.....

These opinions sync up perfectly with reality. The gaming market is segmented, which is why I hate to see good games attempt mainstream status by trying to appeal across the board.

its not that their audience appreciate it more, its that $ony are the only ones willing to take a risk on these types of things!
so of course when they release there going to sell better, simply because PSN gamers expect them and other gamers dont!
other publishers are much more play it safe they wont delve away from what they know, they always stay in their comfort zone.
you dont go to XBLA expecting games like flower or journey because M$ would not publish them because there too risky.
so of course theres going to be a larger market on PSN!

Nonsense! I'm sorry but the PSN line up does not appeal to 'adults'. Fat Princess... really? I for one am getting sick of this whole independent revolution this gen. Due to the internet everyone feels they have a voice and due to sites like Youtube we're becoming adjusted to accept such amateur work. I for one won't stand for it. Heck, I can appreciate game like Limbo & Journey, the best of the best, but Flower... It's just an indie tech demo...

I bought a PS3 to play the most advanced up to date technology produced games. Not PSN Mini's mobile games like Angry Birds or Flash games like that Bloodrayne title some months ago. Now I am not a graphics whore and can appreciate older gen games, but these are not older gen games... keep it on the internet kids, not on my console.

Just because you can't appreciate certain things, and the minute you see something with color you assume it's for kids, doesn't really prove anything.

Jus small games for people with small wallets I guess, lol. There's tons of little googly games on the psn, but there are a bunch of good games too. And you can usually tell what's good and what's not by the price, with the exception of tekken 4 and gt5, and that stupid, stupid, super rub a dub game. But there really is something for everyone on the psn, you just gotta browse. The art games on the psn are cool for about two or three days, but once completed and all trophies earned it feels pointless to play again bc it's like watching just to see the game's artwork, there's no new objectives or different way to play them. Kind of a waste of money to me that could've been spent on a dynamic theme that serves a daily purpose and still has an artistic outlook.
