Dark Souls, Ace Combat Fuel Positive Namco Bandai Results

Not all Japanese publishers are facing dark days.

Namco Bandai has enjoyed its best fiscal year since 2008, and this positive performance is due in part to the critically acclaimed Dark Souls.

From Software's award-winner sold 1.19 million copies in North America and Europe (remember that Namco Bandai did not distribute the game in Japan), and in another solid showing, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon topped the million plateau as well (1.07 million). Other notable titles for the publisher were Tales of Xillia (770,000), Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi (700,000), and Soul Calibur V (690,000). Perhaps with slightly better review scores, the latter could've done better given the high-profile status of its name.

All told, Namco Bandai took in revenue of 454.2 billion yen ($5.7 billion), which is up 15% in the year-over-year comparison, and net profits were also up to 19.3 billion yen ($241.8 million). So they're lookin' good for now.

I loved ace combat, but never saw anyone else playing it. I didn't think many others had picked it up, which worried me. It's nice to see that it sold that well.

I have to admit though, it wasn't the same storyline and experience that the ace combats from the PS2 days where, but it was still a solid game.

No, but I see a Japanese version taunting me on store shelves every time I go to a game store here in Korea. I swear, the eyes on the game case follow me around the store...

Hope we get it! Playing Tales of the Abyss on my PS2 right now, and it is one hell of an RPG. I am loving all of it, especially the characters (Jade rules!). Graces f is waiting on my backlog.

I'm starting to close in on the end of Grace F, it feels like the good old days getting hooked into a classic JRPG story. That just doesn't happen much anymore.

Yeah the Tales series are definitely that franchise that has kept its general formula sinse the day the series was born. Symphonia, The Abyss, Graces/F , Vesperia and Xillia are amongst peoples most favorite within the franchise.

yeah,I wish the new ace combat game play could be combined with the classic story telling they used to do. That and the more fantastical aircraft you would go up against. I understand their direction, but think the baby may have been thrown out with the bath water. Still, I am happy to see the series going strong.

I can remember when I heard that ace combat was finally coming to the PS3. I knew I was going to be buying it. But when I played it, I realized it wasn't my old Ace Combat. I was more like Call of Ace Combat. I still enjoy the game, but I could be just as happy playing Hawx (not Hawx 2, they screwed that one up too...) hopefully they'll get back into telling great stories like they used to, but I won't be rushing out to buy the next one, that's for sure.

Hm, Ace Combat is a very touchy subject for me, The new one I mean. I diddn't like the feel or the controls. Controls? What controls, diddn't feel like I was flying at all. I'm soooo loving these companies that have had awesome games in the past, put out a box of crap with a name you've known and loved for a long time. It sells well just because of the name then people realise it sucks. Well it only works once, maybe twice before you go under (ZIPPER) People say this Gen is awesome but if you think about it too much has changed for the worse and games don't feel like they used to.

Dark Souls was a master piece. A mixture of Castlevania and Monster Hunter hahaha brilliant indeed.

Perhaps Soul Calibur 5 would have done better had they not ripped out the soul of the game - pun very much intended - with the removal of certain classic characters including, but not limited to Sophitia, Taki and Xianghua?

Ridge racer for Vita might have been a positive as well, had they not charged full price for an empty game and then sold the cars and tracks needed at a ridiculous up-charge. That up-charging resulting in gamers effectively spending more than they would on a full price PS3 title to get a fairly basic version of Ridge Racer running on the Vita...
