Stahawk MLG Involvement, All Map Packs Confirmed As FREE

For all of you who really don't like to pay for new map packs (yeah, you), maybe you should pick up Starhawk.

Not only is the multiplayer wicked awesome (review coming in less than 24 hours), but it was just announced at the PlayStation Blog that all map packs the developers produce will be completely free.

Sweet, right? Furthermore, Major League Gaming has taken an interest in the title's intriguing and addictive blend of third-person action and real-time strategy, which has resulted in a competition that will hand out $20,000 in prizes. If you're interested in participating, visit the MLG tournament page to get started. There's also a live stream for the MLB Starhawk exhibition featuring pro gamers Tsquared, Hastr0, and GoldenBoyFTW! If you missed it, you can check it out here.

So yeah, MLG attention and all the map packs confirmed free. Plus, the game is getting plenty of critical acclaim out there, so all in all, not a bad launch day for Starhawk. I'm kinda bitter about the single-player campaign, but you can read more about that tomorrow.

These guys did a great job supporting Warhawk, but free maps for Starhawk? Woohoo!!

Just grabbed this game today, Like Ben said, the campaign is kind of meh...more of a warm up for the online, but the online has always been where it's at for these guys. If you liked Warhawk I recommend this one. It's Warhawk on 'roids. And a pretty solid online experience. Not to mention the more people who pick up on here means more people for me to try to co-op missions with. I haven't tried those yet.

This is great news, i wish more developer/publishers would do this. Although i suspect this move may be to try to persuade more ps3 owners to buy starhawk. And although ign did give it a 9.0 its at currently on metacritic with 14 reviews at 77% not exactly critically acclaimed. I liked the beta but ima wait a bit till starhawk goes on sale since im honestly in no rush to play it.

These guys know what they are doing. The game is phenomenal and now we get free DLC!! Bravo!

I just played Starhawk for 3 hours and it's unbelievably fun! I had so much fun! The TPShooting is very good and the control was spot on.

The dog fighting was really well done. I used lock on missiles, machine guns and flairs to distract incoming missiles. There are icons floating around the space stations that give you more missiles or fix your ship if you are damaged.

The base building......why the hell hasn't this been done before!! How addicting is this game! So far I am playing only the SP on Mercenary. The game just reeks of love and fan service. The graphics are amazing to me. I really enjoyed the look when I was in space.

Once I beat SP it's off to MP. Well done Lightbox, well done!

I try not to be the spelling police (and it's hard) but Ben your brain went to MLB in the link up there instead of MLG.

That's pretty awesome for players to get free maps, they should be careful though or they will create coddled entitled gamers that will ruin us all!

Yeah, that's because I tend to skim over links without actually checking them. No idea why.

Fixed now.

I have no intentio to buy day 1 but knowing this ( free maps ) i ll get it at first price drop instead of a lot later .So more money for them so they are making more money because of the free map nonetheless .

I am not getting the game but am very happy to see them do the free DLC map packs. Too many people out there think that because it is a business that you "have" to charge for everything and that simply is not true. The game will gain quite a few buyers because of this decision which is very smart on their part.

Thumbs up to you Lightbox.

Couldn't agree more. I wasn't going to get this game until later in the year. But now...how can I not get it today? :P

i hope they continue this with weekly events contests gaming with the dev nights and such.
so many awesome exclusive MP games released this gen but all have fallen flat on their face because of the lack of developer support!

Whooooohoooo! Finally someone is doing what PC games have been doing since the late 90's. I wasn't going to buy this until later on in the year, as I have dragons dogma to look forward to soon. Honestly I will pick this game up today. I can't not support these guys for doing this.

I did not get into this game that much and was not impressed at all at the beta. To be honest, I miss the old Warhawk. Too bad Mag was doomed to die.
