EA's Battlefield 3 Steals "A Significant Share" From CoD

Well, they accomplished what they set out to do.

EA never once lived in a fantasy world where Battlefield 3 could actually outsell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. But they did want to grab more of the FPS market share, and according to their latest financial update, they did just that.

The publisher announced that BF3 has managed to sell 15 million units since launch, and they expect the blockbuster to hit 18 million by the end of this fiscal year (March 31, 2013). Just bear in mind that these numbers are based on units shipped; they aren't the sell-through stats. Even so, EA CEO John Riccitiello confirmed the game's success:

"We did what we said we’d do with Battlefield. Battlefield 3 took [a] very significant share from the leading competitor on its way to being one of the biggest selling titles in EA history. There will be exciting new developments for the Battlefield brand as FY13 progresses."

Although Activision's Modern Warfare 3 exploded out of the gate and set new sales records early, it has yet to top Black Ops in the overall sales category. A sign of a possible slide...? And with Battlefield really doing well in the shooter world, maybe EA is taking the right approach; chipping away at the mammoth beast until it falls...

I just dl'ed BF3 for my PC. The SP really is full of action and I can understand why psx gave it the best sound FX for 2011. Cod sure seems unstoppable right now, but it can't last forever, can it?

I've usually loved the campaign modes in the bad company games, but I got to say I just couldn't get into this battlefield. I know that it's not a bad company, but The campaign lacked something I can't put my finger on, but it was enough that I don't want to go back and play it again. And the online, well I gave it a couple of tries, but I just couldn't seem to enjoy it.

It is a nice looking game, but it is missing something, for me anyways, that makes me want to go back and play it over and over...

Im sure lots of call of duty fanatics were a contributing factor to BF3 15 mill in sales. Myself included.

I think Jimmy is correct. There is very little evidence of an actual erosion in COD sales. MW3 still broke records and went on to become the fastest selling COD title to date. If EA really captured a "significant portion" of the COD market then there should be some decline in COD's numbers but there isn't. Gamers buying both would go a long way towards explaining why COD sales remain intact for the most part.

I'm another one of them but the reason people couldn't get into the campaign is because it is short xD. The sound effects are so eargasmic especially in 5.1 :)

Now that you mention, I think you're right. I remember playing the campaign and thinking, "huh, that's it?"

Which is weird because everyone says the campaign in Starhawk is supposed to be short, but I'm having fun with it...but I also bought Starhawk with the impression that is was mainly an online game. Maybe I need to start adopting that mentality for fps's now too. Because there's been very few this generation that have had compelling campaign modes in my opinion. The few that I can think of have been mostly PS3 exclusives.

Still playing and loving BF3. Though I don't play nearly as much as I used to as I'm with my 4 month old all week. Gaming is more of a treat now when I get to play :)

I hear that, I don't have the time either with my 4 yr old. However we do play Lego and Disney Universe games. But I am unable to play MY games until he is asleep which is tough, very tough when games like StarHawk are now available!

10 million, 15 million. You're damn right it's a considerable share of the market. But what does that ultimately mean? As long as you're the biggest, you have a target on your back so even if the double shot of Battlefield and Medal of Honor does manage to topple Call of Duty, you can bet your bottom dollar that THQ will try to turn Homefront into a contender and who knows what other companies will spring up trying to catch a piece of this unimaginative pie.

I'm quite happy to say that the only FPS on my radar this year is Bioshock Infinite and I see nothing that has the potential to change that.

this is EXACTLY why they were recently voted worst company!
just because you create some of the best games out there and am swimming in money does not mean you can act like a 6 year old spoiled brat!
christ, what ever happened to professionalism?
if i was to say half the sh*t EA says to my competition id be fired so fast my head would spin so quickly it would generate its own gravitational field!

The competition can only help both devs. Also, it's great to be able to enjoy both great franchises. They both have a lot to offer and I am glad I contributed to both sales figures.

Personally I think the two games are too different to really be in direct competition. COD I can get the hang of after a few rounds, while I had a really hard time getting into the gameplay of Battlefield. It's difficult and demands much more of cooperation, knowing the classes and strategies.

I wonder if some of the FPS players start out with COD then move to Battlefield? It make sense right, COD is basically pick up and play where as battlefield takes more skill, and don't want to be in the middle of the map or u going to get pawned.

Blank Jones... Ever heard of shareholders?!? May seem petty but shareholders love to hear this type of stuff. I'm a total BF3 fan and i'm glad to see another game other than COD to be doing really really well. Because it really is a great game as long as you put the time in to be great. Good games deserve to be rewarded and BF3 sir, is a great game. I'm still trying to figure out why you even play video games. Absolutely nothing pleases you and you have nothing positive to say about anything, ever! I just don't get it...

Well if you think about it, just how many people have bought every CoD since MW1? Thats at least £200 on the games alone, putting aside all the DLC some of thoses people paid for. Plus an extra £40 if thoses people are going to buy Black Ops II. Maybe people are finally spending they money on something a little diffrent (Although BF3 is still an FPS) instead of paying for pretty much the same game just newer maps and an updated story.
