Tomb Raider Reboot Needs More Time, Delayed Until 2013

Well, it didn't have a fixed launch date to begin with, but we had hoped it would release this year.

Many are hoping to see a return to epic form for Lara Croft, as Crystal Dynamics is currently preparing a slick Tomb Raider reboot. Unfortunately, as announced in the Eidos forums today, the anticipated title has been delayed until 2013.

It seems the original release window of Q3 2012 wouldn't have given the developers enough time; studio boss Darrell Gallagher explains the reasons for the delay as follows:

"Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest-quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game's release date by a few months, from fall 2012 [spring in Australia] to the first quarter of 2013.

We're doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game, and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice, and I guarantee it will be worth the wait."

So you don't feel too disappointed, they did toss up a new screenshot. That seems like a poor consolation prize but hey, the last thing Lara needs is a mediocre attempt at rejuvenation, right? Besides, as usual, the fall seems to be pretty well stacked with potentially fantastic experiences, so we'll live.

Well, obviously this is not as disappointing a news as the Bioshock delay, but still... It was on my "one to watch" list.

Oh well, we still got Far Cry 3, Borderlands 2, Dust 514, hopefully GTA 5 and what now seem to top the list: Dishonored. Still a strong autumn, but we need no more delays now.

hmm, another one...well this was my 2nd most (after AC III) anticipated title for this year, after Bioshock was delayed to next year.
I can wait as there are plenty of good games coming this fall.

I think this is a win win win, they get more development time, we get a better game(theoretically), and they don't have to compete with yet another ridiculous fall.

Far too many games were coming out anyway, also, more development time is never a negative. Smart choice.

Good and bad I guess. We're all interested but it's going to need to work hard to stand up to Uncharted so please by all means take your time. I wanted to play it but I couldn't do a day 1 this year for moneys sake. Maybe next year things will change.

Games are fleeing 2012, I think too many were syncing up with a release around Cod time.

I'm problems grabbing at straws here but does anyone here believe that publishers are aware of a holiday release for GTA 5? I'm hoping so. The Tomb Rader reboot looks and sounds intriguing so I'll definitely purchase it but GTA would actually be first priority. Sorry if inquiry is off topic.

I think they just fear cod taking all the money.

Could this be a symptom of Mass Effect 3 ? Whereas the game company's saw a problem of fan expectations and are now trying to make sure it doesnt happen to them ?

They have a right to take their time, they did an amazing facial and game play lift to the original tomb raider without changing too much that old fans didn't feel alienated from their memories, for that they can take all the time in the world, but go duke nuke'em on it lol
