Capcom Reveals Japanese-Oriented Lost Planet Spin-Off

It's an interesting idea, at the very least.

According to Andriasang citing a recent Famitsu report, Capcom has revealed Ex Troopers, a Lost Planet spin-off for the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo 3DS. ...yeah, only those two platforms.

Monster Hunter veteran Shintaro Kojima has the reigns on this one, which evidently shares the same world as Lost Planet. However, there will be a distinct Japanese flair here, as we'll receive an anime presentation and a school-themed story. The Famitsu summary describes the title as a "science fiction Justice Gakuen" and between stages, the game utilizes a "manga demo" event system. The latter is akin to what we'll find in the upcoming PlayStation Vita title, Gravity Rush, which also has definite Japanese style. Lastly, Capcom has tapped May'n for the game's theme song.

That's all we know for now, but we wonder what if the concept will work. They're taking a franchise clearly designed to appeal to Western audiences and making it more Japanese. Now, that may mean it only releases in Japan (because Lost Planet 3 may not sell too well in that country), but we're still not certain it'll be successful. Well, cross your fingers.

And this more Japanese take on the franchise will never see the light of day outside Japan - correct?

When I read they weren't going to do it on the 360 I thought the same.

They should go review Namco's financials. When you look at their game sales, see which platform (PS3) accounts for the majority of their business...seems like a smart business would take notiuce of that and cater to the PS3 market as a whole...

Okay, now I'm interested in Lost Planet. Should have done this from the beginning.

Awesome! Japanese companies making Japanese games; this is exactly what they should have done in the beginning. Japanese companies making Americanized games just gives us Good Americanized games from America, and Shoddy Americanized games from Japan. Why buy a worse copy of what you already have? That was pretty much Lost Planet 2's whole problem.

I do hope this makes it to the US. Or at least to an Asia version with English subtitles which I can import :-)

Japanese publishers need to wake up to English subtitles and the fact that we can import their games if they are good enough. It's not necessary to do a full localization and publish here, we can buy from Japan or Asia, as long as there are subtitles. Actually, I think many of the more hard core gamers would prefer that.
