The Last Of Us May Earn This Generation's Graphics Crown

With all this talk of the next generation, we have to accept the inevitability of a new round of consoles.

And that means we have to accept that this generation should be drawing to a close within the next couple of years (although developers will continue to produce titles for the PS3, 360, and Wii, I'm sure).

As of right now, what little I'm seeing of The Last Of Us appears head-and-shoulders above the competition in terms of graphical presentation and technical capability. The latest trailer is just more evidence of Naughty Dog's amazing ability to make the PlayStation 3 do things no other console can do. So I think it's fair to assume that the game will look better than anything we've seen before it.

No, I don't believe that's being presumptuous; we know Naughty Dog's history, we've seen how the Uncharted titles have raised the graphics bar with each successive installment, and we know The Last Of Us isn't even close to being done...yeah, it could look better than what we're seeing in the trailers. And even if it doesn't, I still can't think of a worthy competitor outside of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Now, if we include PC in the discussion, it's feasible that Crysis 3 could top everything when it releases next year, and that's a viable point.

But to be perfectly honest, and I really don't give a crap what the PC fans think, both of the last two Uncharted's topped Crysis 2 in the overall visual presentation category in my estimation. And yes, I've seen Crysis 2 running on monster PCs with max settings; it didn't change my opinion in the slightest. But that's a whole other argument. The point is that The Last Of Us may arrive at a time when the generation is drawing to a close, developers are already working on next-gen titles, and let's face it, the Xbox 360 and Wii have long since been tapped out.

The last possibility would have to be a PS3 exclusive in my mind, and I suppose that could be God of War: Ascension, or maybe something off in the future...but Uncharted 4, Killzone 4, and Gran Turismo 6 might all be PS4 titles. So at this point, I think it's very possible that The Last Of Us may go down in history as having the best graphics of this generation.

Thank you Ben. I've been saying that for a while. Yeah... Crysis 2 maxed out has insane particle effects, crazy textures and so on and so on, but as a whole, Uncharted looks more amazing, because of the locations and just what's going on! Like the waves of sand towards the end with the city crumbling apart!

I also get the feeling that the next generation isn't going to impress me much when it comes to graphics, and that has a lot to do with Naughty Dog, Crysis and Killzone.

I agree. I'm playing Crysis 2 right now after upgrading to a new graphics card and I was still thinking to myself what the big deal was. Don't get my wrong it looks great and perhaps among the best in terms of graphics in the fps catagory (I still think Killzone 3 is more impressive though) but the Uncharted games definitley had more wow factor.

what textures?
if you think crysis 2 has high detailed textures go boot up the witcher 2!
crysis 2 only looked so average on PC because crytek is too tight a$$ed and lazy to make a game for the PC and a separate one for consoles.
hell, freaking crysis, a 6 year old game had higher textures than crysis 2!

I don't know how they do it, but I've never seen games with better highly detailed textures than the Uncharted's. Just look close-up at rocks, buildings, pieces of wood etc, it's astounding...

I hope they bring out more games that'll push the PS3 to the max before this generations over. I'm not sure if any games have tested the PS3 limits, if not then I hope to see what it can do before the next set of consoles are released.

Yes sir. From what I've seen (very little) this game already looks better than Uncharted 1, 2, or 3. So yes, I don't forsee any other game coming out on consoles to look better. Maybe Quantic Dream's next PS3 game if it looks anything like that tech demo. GoW will be gorgeous as well, but the animations are never as good as Naught Dogs.

What we are forgetting here is that the full potential of the PS3 have not been tapped. PS2 for years, developers been saying that they've used up the PS2 potential but as new games come out for the ps2 the graphics looks even better then the last. This is likely the case with the PS3. The reason why we have not seen PS3 full potential is because most games are made with a multiplatform in mind, so it have to be compatible with xbox and other console. But theres only a few exclusives for the ps3 and as we can see, with each iteration of the exclusive the better the graphics become. metal gear solid 4 came out almost 4 years ago and the graphic back then was incredible and the developer was saying they were pushing the ps3 to its limits. But now that developers know how to utilize the ps3 power efficiently we will be seeing better graphics with every exclusives.

It'll take the graphics crown for this generation's consoles anyway. And probably for realism; stylistically and artistically, there are better examples.

Naughty Dog should be commended for squeezing so much out of the PS3 and pushing it to the absolute limits. Really shows what you can do with something you know a lot about. They work within their constraints to make something beautiful; now that's an achievement.

Exactly! I was thinking the exact same thing. I said the same thing after watching the first piece of footage of Uncharted 3, and I was still a little annoyed after finally finishing the game the other day that I had seen too much in advance (like the burning chateau + only a few seconds from footage of the sinking ship & plane takeoff) but it was enough to sort of take a bit away from the excitement of seeing it for the first time...

Now, it comes down to strength of character to try to avoid upcoming awesome trailers of The Last of us, including E3, which is usually tricky when you want to watch the Sony Press conference, but I'll try my best...

For me, style is more important than sheer technical prowess. TLoU may feature realistic graphics, but that doesn't make them any less impressive in my eyes. The atmosphere of that trailer really managed to draw me in and I must say that it is very possible that they will walk away with the crown.

It does look astonishing, and I have a propensity for picking out even the slightest technical glitch in visual presentations that are commonly the aftermath of achieving excellent visual fidelity.

The next gen will probably be about stabilizing things at 1080p and 60fps instead of a huge leap in graphics. And that would be okay with me.

Talking on both sides of our mouths, are we? Until you've actually seen the in graphics and not just the cutscenes, then we can talk. FF7 had nice cutscenes in comparison to the actual gameplay.

If you've never scene the actual gameplay of diablo 3, you'd think it looked and played like a dungeons and dragons 3rd person shooter and or action game. But it actually looks and maybe plays like a old school quarter crunching gauntlet with much better graphics, multiplayer, but in dungeons instead of mazes.

I'm sure (I don't know for sure)the fighting system might be a little more advanced than gauntlet. Which kinda begs the question, why can't they put this on the current ps3 and xbox 360?

Well, like Uncharted, the cutscenes are rendered within the game engine. And in Uncharted, they were a pretty good representation of the gameplay. So I think it's safe to say that what you see here, in the cutscene, will be pretty representative of the actual gameplay.

We know what this dev is capable of, we know their visual presentation gets better with each game, and we know as ludicrous said that there is little difference between the cuts and the gameplay so it's enough to speculate on.

I'd hold off until there's actual gameplay footage. Even if cutscenes are rendered live with the game engine, it's easier to do great graphics when it's following a static script. Not that I'd expect anything bad, of course!

Ben, how come you always think GT6 has a better chance of being a PS4 game than a PS3? I'm just curious how you always come to that conclusion. Personally, from what I follow, it's more likely a PS3 title.

I actually think it's inevitable. The development time of the GT games is getting longer and longer, and there hasn't been the slightest whisper of GT6 yet. Furthermore, given Yamauchi's perfectionist drive, I think he might want the added power of a new piece of hardware for his new vision.

We also can't forget that they do plan to continue to support GT5 for quite some time.

i dunno about that, theres still pleanty of games to be released after this that could move it on.
i doubt GOW because that will be out in march, this probably will release later.
but theres still whatever GG decide to release, whatever QD decide to release, whatever the 2nd team ND has decides to release, and so on and so on.
a bit early to be calling it quits now..........
