David Cage: "Not Everybody Has To Do The Same Thing"

David Cage and Quantic Dream believe in progression, refinement, advancement, creativity, innovation, ambition, and just about any other positive aspect of the interactive entertainment industry.

And in a recent Gamasutra interview, Cage spoke at length about doing something new and packing an emotional punch. He says he wants to "create many cool experiences for a mature audience," which requires an emphasis on "stories, characters, and emotion."

We certainly saw a lot of that in Heavy Rain, which went over very well with critics and consumers alike. This success gave Cage confidence, and he realized that nobody had an issue with the lack of guns. No shooting, no problem. When asked what the game's performance told Cage and Co. about the gaming landscape, he replied:

"Again, it gave me really a lot of confidence in exploring this new direction in showing there's enough room in the industry for different types of experiences. Not everybody has to do the same thing. The audience is more open than we think, in general. And, yes, they want first person shooters. And, yes, they want action/adventure, and they want all the genres, and that's fine.

But I think if you come with something that is really sincere, that you truly believe in, there's a place for you. It was the case on Heavy Rain. That is the case for anyone who is interested in trying something different. I think we are an industry in desperate need of innovation, so we need more new ideas and more silly concepts. Trying new things is very important."

If we had our way, we'd name Hideo Kojima president of the world of gaming and David Cage vice president in charge of general industry progression in the area of arts and drama. We'd also find spots for Kaz Hirai, Ted Price, Jenova Chen, Kazunori Yamauchi, Fumito Ueda, several dudes and dudettes from Naughty Dog, and Keiji Inafune, just 'cuz he isn't afraid of saying anything. He can be PR.

I really like this guy. I appreciate his desire for innovation in an industry that is currently rewarding the opposite. Keep fighting the good fight man.

Also, in your "World of Gaming Company", can't forget Yu Suzuki at the head of the Shenmue 3 committee. It would be a sin not for this to happen. I can only imagine how great Shenmue would be with today's technology. Someone give me a tissue, I'm starting to drool.

a f*cking men!
seriously, can some scientists hurry the f*ck up and invent cloning machines so we can have more guys like him?
as he said, if you truly believe in a concept and put the effort required into it than there certainly will be a audience for you!
allot of developers seem to forget there gamers too so chances are what they want to play is what we want to play!
i just wish more developers would remember that!

Well yeah "we need silly concepts" and then Time Splitters 4 gets the shaft because the blood didn't flow, spray, shoot out correctly or violently enough during the pitch.

Sometimes it's best just to get on with your work, yo.

Fuckin Time Splitters, man! Do any of you even remember how absolutely, sincerely fun it was to shoot those monkeys!
