Poll Implies That PS3 Owners Aren't Too Interested In Mobile Gaming

The state of gaming is always a hot topic these days, especially considering the emergence of portable gaming via smartphones and tablets.

And in a recent poll conducted by DealNews.com, we get a few interesting stats: The Wii isn't exactly seen as a hardcore gamer's machine, unsurprisingly the Xbox 360 is the #1 console of choice, and most would agree that someone is a gamer if they exclusively play on the 360, PS3, or PC.

But another interesting result arrived as part of this poll, in which 1,551 readers participated. It comes from the question that asked people how much they'd be willing to spend on a mobile game; 32% of PS3 owners said they'd only buy a mobile game if it was free. We could conclude from this that PS3 fans are thriftier than other gamers, or maybe we could assume that PlayStation followers are the most hardcore of the bunch and kinda scoff at mobile gaming. By the way, for the record, even those who primarily played games on mobile devices didn't consider themselves "gamers."

But perhaps above all else, it definitely implies that 1/3 of PS3 owners simply aren't too interested in mobile interactive entertainment, yes? I mean, if we're only willing to play something if it's free...we really can't care much about it, now can we?

I can go with those statements Ben. I'd never buy a mobile game..EVER. I've downloaded tons of free games but end up playing for 10 mins or so and then uninstall. I'm don't particularly like handhelds too much either..I just can't get into "games-on-the-go" like I was when I was a kid. Rather sit in front of the flat screen rather than my android screen or handheld..To actually buy a mobile game though...I'll pass.

I've bought quite a few mobile games, and those have been pretty good for their use.

I have no idea how many hours I've spent on games like Wordfeud, Uniwar, Landrule and Draw Something but at a couple of bucks each they sure do offer an insane bang for the bucks.

I think it's about time that us "real" gamers stop being so darn snobbish and acknowledge mobile gaming for being the additional gaming arena that it is. We should also stop comparing them to PC/console games cause they are not supposed to be that. They are mobile games.

I guess I don't really get why most "hardcore" gamers wouldn't be caught dead with a mobile game. If it's fun, so what? If a developer makes a game that engages me on some level, I feel I should reward their efforts by buying their games. Most mobile games are what, $0.99? I'd gladly pay that for a game that can keep me entertained wherever I am. Yeah, sure, I still love my GTAs and my Uncharteds and all those games, but what's wrong with a casual game for when I'm not at home?

It all depends on the mobile device or game. IF it's for my Vita I'd buy it if it's something I like. My phone on the other hand I don't really play games on. I get bored quick with casual games. I mainly download free games on it for my kids to play. I use it for internet, talking, FB, twitter, music, and other apps that are non-gaming.

If it's for the PSP or Vita, then yeah, I'd buy it.

For all other mobile devices, then....NO.
(plus the fact that I hate Cellphones)

Hardly a surprise. Who can be a hardcore mobile gamer after playing the PS3 great games?

The only games on the go that I play on the phone are quick games like air hockey and angry birds while I'm waiting in line or for somebody.

Saying "I would buy it if it was free" really doesn't make sense now does it? I think what's really going on is 32% of PS3 gamers know there are free mobile games that are fantastic, so why pay? The other 68%? They know about Kairosoft.

Yeah now that I think about it one of my favourite mobile games, "Landrule", is indeed free (if you want to you can support the developer by buying additional maps) and is a great recreation of the good old classic board game Risk.

another reason its a stupid comparison, allot of mobile games offer free versions which are the same games just shorter like demos.
most play these mobile games only for a short period of time, so why pay for a 6 hour game when your only going to use it maybe a hour a week?

I have no problem spending money on iPhone games. $0.99 for something that can keep me mildly amused for 5-10 minutes a couple of times per month is by far not the worst way I've ever spent a dollar.

Mobile games are a waste of time to me and I have no interest in them. Little 5 minute experiences are not what I look for in a game.

The only mobile game I would pay for would be if Wizards of the Coast brought Magic Duels of the Planeswalkers to mobile devices. Being able to play magic on the go would be great. I don't get much time with my PS3 anymore thanks to my daughter always hogging it with Netflix.

Yeah, funny how much longer a battery last when you don't use it.

Personally I just use my Vita as a mp3 player. The battery last much longer that way.

I buy iPhone games from time to time, but most of the ones I try are free, then quickly deleted. I always like to have a few little games like sudoku, solitaire, and tetris with me. Paying a dollar or two for these is no problem.

I don't understand how so many of the people here hate mobile games so adamantly. There is a big difference between these little time wasters and real console games. I don't know if they feel that their console games are threatened by Angry Birds or what.

just goes to show the ignorance of people!
in fact mobile games give you a hell of allot more value for money than what console, hell even vita games do!
N.O.V.A 3 for instance, a game that has console quality graphics, a 6+ hour campaign mode, awesome multiplayer, AND it only costs 6 bucks!
youd be paying a hell of allot more than that if it was a PSN game!
hell the PSP mini port of the original nova if i remember right is 10 bucks!
and that was a pretty average game...........

The N.O.V.A Mini game is $4.99 on PSN. If only the sequels were available on the PSN I'd be playing the hell out of those on my Vita, and I take that thing everywhere.
As a person who has played Dead Space, Battlefield Bad Company, and fighting games for my ipod touch, I can say that I'd rather play games like that on a mobile platform that has a thumbstick and physical buttons. My thumbs can't take using another touchscreen to move a character anymore.

I for one have not based my gaming decisions based on willful ignorance.
