E3 2012: David Cage Unveils Beyond With Actress Ellen Page
Damn, they hit us with it right off the bat!
Quantic Dream boss David Cage is on the stage right now at Sony's E3 2012 press conference, and he has announced his team's new project that will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3: Beyond: Two Souls. Excited we are.
The concept centers on death; for the first time in a video game, we will move beyond the realm of life and examine what happens "beyond." More details will be forthcoming but we know the main character, Jodi Holmes, will be portrayed by Academy Award-nominated actress Ellen Page. There's no doubt that someone of Page's caliber should lend a whole lot of authenticity to the role.
They're showing a portion of the game right now; it's running in real-time on the PS3 and it looks freakin' incredible. The more we learn about this, the more excited we're gonna be. Quantic Dream is looking to raise the bar in the interactive entertainment industry yet again...and we believe they will. Who doubts these guys?
Holy crap.

I think World, what we are seeing, quite simply, is incredible leaps in code optimisation, where the developers are now much better equipped to actually branch code out across all 7 SPU's far more efficiently and effectively than before.
As the platform matures so do the coding and development tools that are used to develop for it. Having the Cell with this mass amount of parallelism is only effective if one knows how to use it and efficiently branch code across the architecture accordingly...
Therefore we see Cell taking on an increasing amount of GFX and Post Processing work to help its slower cousin, RSX... But its thanks to Cell that all the additional wizardry can be calculated on the fly, such as the virtual camera focus pull, bloom effects, motion blur and anti-aliasing. It wouldn't be possible to use RSX alone...
The massive parallelism of Cell trumps all..
Why do we need a PS4?

Good conference on a whole - nothing groundbreaking but some good showing from Quantic Dream, Ubisoft, and Naughty Dog - the scene in Last of Us held so much realism (genuine fear) even though it was an action sequence.

Those fast trailer clips towards the end of the demo LOOKED incredible, but i my interest completely halted. Heavy Rain was almost ruined for me because of the Hollywood action road it took and awful rushed endings.
The concept of growing with her for 15 years intrigued me completely. But it seems most of the game will be set on her adult life of Ethan Mars-like escape from police which i didn't enjoy in Heavy Rain.
I'm hoping for true character development in the growing up scenes and a lot of Father & Son scenes to really push emotional cinematic storytelling in games.
...Not awful, cringe worthy one-liners like "if you come after me again.....i'll kill you all".
Very intrigued, though. Kara seemed far more interesting on the surface....but Beyond seems to be dealing with a deeper topic....i just hope it isn't ruined by Hollywood theatrics.
The opening cop scene reminded me of an early M. Night Shyamalan production which is a good thing.

I'm interested to see how Beyond blends the story telling sequences with the action ones.

I hope the game doesn't take too much of a supernatural route, I loved the sense of realism in Heavy Rain and would like something similar. But this certainly has me excited, I hope to see the gameplay.
