E3 2012: God Of War, The Last Of Us Gameplay = Sony Win
Fancy cinematics and CGI are one thing. Gameplay is quite another, yes?
Sony's E3 2012 press conference has just drawn to a close and although there wasn't anything especially groundbreaking (besides that unbelievable Beyond: Two Souls footage), the gameplay on display is what put Sony head-and-shoulders above the competition. No doubt about it.
The God of War: Ascension action was just plain bloody and fantastic from top to bottom. Featuring the gory flair for which the franchise is so well known, Kratos took on everything from sword-wielding elephants to a massive Kraken-like creature at the end. We also watched him switch seamlessly between his own sword and the traditional Blades of Chaos, which should indeed lead to quite a few combat options.
Then there was The Last Of Us gameplay, which looked absolutely stunning. The urgency and authenticity of the footage is almost indescribable, as Joel and Ellie fight to simply stay alive against weapon-toting guys who react and move quite realistically. Ellie created a distraction to give Joel the edge at one point, and in another example of a super cool mechanic, Joel took one guy hostage and tried to use him as leverage. Plus you've got the combination of the third-person shooting (which looked great) and the melee combat, which appears to be a major aspect of the experience.
Oh, and let's not forget footage for Assassin's Creed: Liberation, which should be one of the PlayStation Vita's most impressive titles to date. Factor in cross-platform tie-ins with Assassin's Creed III on the PS3, and PlayStation aficionados are definitely going to get the definitive AC experience this fall. Wonderbook was neat, PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale looked kinda fun, and four-player co-op in Far Cry 3 looked like a blast. But above all else, the gameplay at Sony's conference dominated.

For once we'll see a game that doesn't concentrate on survival against the root problem. We'll see the effects it takes on everyone with detail and show the strives you'll have to take just to get by everyday and keep your supplies. And you'll have to be rutheless to achieve this... Awesome how through the years we see how darker each new Nauhty Dog franchise gets.
The graphics with all three titles show how much the PS3 hasn't seen it's limits yet. They actually look a slight level beyond Killzone, Uncharted and GoWIII.
--------------------------------------
Microsoft's presentation was...horrible. EA's wasn't great. Ubisoft provided, espeically with their last new sleeper title, Watch Dogs. It looks totally awesome. And of course ACIII which I predict will be the best AC game up to date.

We see Cell parallelism at its finest here. Sony can do no wrong, now I wonder of the XBOX360 crowd would actually understand and appreciate what they would have just seen... quite spectacular...
Again, why do we need a PS4?

Was totally hoping for some Infamous 3 news or Ratchet and Clank PSN game news.
And was it me or did they show some games during the opening montage that you didn't recognize?
This whole E3 seems to be a major let down.

In perspective, I was hoping that Microsoft would convince me that there's really something for me in their console but there's just not. Theirs focused too much on Kinect and media offerings. I'm glad Sony did the complete opposite and dedicated most of its time to what I personally would like to see most: the games.

Beyond: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, The Last Of Us, Assassin's Creed III, Assassin's Creed: Liberation, and Far Cry 3 don't add up to two.
And given the Internet these days, you likely won't find anything "new" at any press conference, as it's almost all technically leaked ahead of time.

If they wanted to focus on the games, I would also have liked to see *less* of *more* games: more snippets and fewer live demos; each takes too long.
Overall, I was pleased but not blown away.

and that smart glass.... I don't like the idea of killing my battery on all my touch devices while watching a movie...
...or going back and forth from my phone (or tablet) to a controller, and back again.
...Or trying to place my touch devices in an optimal spot for viewing while still being able to watch whatever is happening on the TV.
and I don't even like playing pac-man on a touch screen, let alone a game that requires the use of 12+ buttons.
It might all sound good on paper, but it's usability is suspect as far as I'm concerned.

And Microsoft should take some cues from Sony about press conferences - you don't need Joe Montana or Usher to have an exciting conference. Just have the developers get up on stage and show off what they have been working so hard on.

We should create a list of missed rumors or games that have been speculated upon. Was the GaiKai rumor a pure fabrication?
As far as VITA! Sony could/should just do a separate show with a slew of content and announcements. TGS maybe? Do they do any announcements during the rest of E3?

I didn't see the M$ presser but from what I heard it wasn't all that. It seems they rather talk about what you can watch on the 360, milking another Halo game, treating COD Black Ops II as a 360 exclusive and showing off their version of the Wii U remote.
I was watching Morgan Webb and that guy that used to be on Attack of the Show and they were trying to make it sound it was ok the 360 just talked about the other features and not the games. All I know when I brought my PS3 I viewed it as a gaming system and any perks that came with it i.e. web browser and PSN was cool.
To me it's about games and which system has them and once again Sony proves with the PS3 and the Vita it's about the games.

Like I said beforehand, no mention of the PS4 woud make me disappointed no matter what. And I am. I wanted something bigger, and leave disappointed.
Much more interesting right now though, is how little attention was given to the Vita. I actually took for granted a lot more time would be spent on the Vita: Much more games, accessories, the obvious price cut... more *focus*, basically. And enthusiasm. Like a newly launched platform should have.
It felt like the Vita has been out for years already and was yesterdays news. Like the PSP the later years. Like they didn't really care anymore. If I were a Vita owner this would have made me real worried.
Looking at the bright side, there is an immense list of GREAT looking games ahead. So there's plenty to do while we wait for the next leap.

I actually thought there was too much on the vita haha. I don't care for handhelds and it makes me really angry to hear that games like AC3: Liberation, will be a Vita title. That game looked good and I'd much rather play it on my console. And going back now, like Ben said it had a huge unveiling at E3 last year. Even then they stated in this show, in 4 months the Vita has over 40 games, and mentioned all the PS1 classics that are going to be available, and much more including more cross functionality with the PS3, that's a lot to talk about really.

My comment was more a question of what I expected from Sony.
@Ben, don't you even find it just a little bit odd that a brand new hand-held console that launched just a few months ago didn't get more focus? A product that's hardly visible in the media as it is, and now that they got the entire world looking at them had a great chance to give it an extra little push it so clearly need?
Regarding the ps4 I do realize I was being a bit optimistic (or pessimistic, depends on your pov). But I do reserve my rights to be excited about what's inevitably right around the corner. I can't wait to hear more about the ps4!

Sony's deep in the red ink, but they still saw fit to give every E3 attendee a free voucher for Playstation Plus, and they were redeemable for other voucher codes for whatever country they might've been from too.
Yeah, I'm sure it's mainly to hook new Plus customers in after they've gotten a little taste of the high(er) life, but still in all, Sony could've just given everyone only a 3 month voucher & be done with it.
Plus Jack Tretton also stated that starting later today, that Plus members will be getting at least 12 games a month now, and including higher caliber games too.
So that's what I call fan service!!!!!

Needless to say, God of War did nothing for me, and I quit watching after the first or second explosion of gore. Then, while I admire what David Cage does and am a fan of his, I absolutely hate how every character of his since the Heavy Rain tech demo has to have a filthy mouth. They made sure to show that off in the Beyond trailer, and it is, of course, never necessary for good story telling. It's lazy writing and a crutch to appear "mature," and I'm sad to see him continuing it. I'll hold off judgement until we see more, but the whole supernatural concept of the story is not impressing me at this point. And lastly, the supreme disappointment was The Last of Us, whose dialog consisted of almost nothing except f-bombs. No matter what the rest of that game is like, the sheer overbearing amount of unnecessary swearing is what will stop me from playing it.
As for the other half of Nintendo rip-offs and sugary kids nonsense, eh....
If this E3 is any indication of where things may be heading, I don't like it one bit. It's as though you have to choose between the most vanilla and boring pieces entertainment, or you must dive straight into the deepest depths of depravity.
I'm still looking forward to games such as Sly 4, The Last Guardian (assuming it exists), Ni no Kuni, and so on. But it seems like the compelling, well developed video game which isn't dripping in blood and having objectionable content plastered over every surface is becoming an endangered species.

By the logic of "it's what would happen," I suppose that means the game should include hardcore rape scenes, as well. But...it doesn't. Funny, isn't it? Someone made a choice that they did not want to include that piece of objectionable content.
Naughty Dog can make the game however they chose to do so, but when they choose to showcase the game with a scene that is overflowing with content that I find objectionable, I will pass. I'm disappointed that they chose to take that route, when they have done so well in the past without it.

As far as swearing in games like "Last of Us" and "Beyond: Two Souls" I have absolutely no issue with it. They both offer up reasoning in which you would swear, one being your survival and the other being as you said supernatural might make you say something you normally wouldn't. I definitely don't think it is lazy writing or a crutch, it is just like someone using a ! in a sentence. Swearing has been around since we developed language get over it, or as you point out don't take part in it. I would almost have sympathy for someone with children, but these games are not being made with children in mind, so if you don't like what you hear or see just don't play them.
ProfPlayStation
Tuesday, June 05, 2012 @ 5:45:28 AM
Yes, that is more or less my point. When the meaning is conveyed effectively, there is no need for language that many people do find objectionable. In the same way, there are Japanese games and anime which, in Japanese, have not one single word in them which is considered on the level with 4-letter swear words in the West. Yet a lazy translator can change that into having untold amounts of objectionable language, to no purpose other than to include objectionable language. A Western product is no different, in that a good story does not need "adult" language for it to be good.
Like I said, everyone can buy whatever you want, but I'm disappointed to see things heading in this direction, in that developers feel that they *must* include this content to be taken seriously. If anything, I would expect it to have the opposite effect on non-gamers.

You don't know that the most controversial and potentially offensive parts of basically any piece of entertainment will hit a presentation or commercial? Sadly, it's what the masses want. It's titillation. You can be mad at the game industry for doing the same thing, but it's business.
In no way would I believe all the dialogue from Beyond is just going to be about swearing. You shouldn't, either, based on their previous projects. Same goes for The Last Of Us. Speaking of "reality checks," you should probably acknowledge the difference between the reality of a product and what is shown to audiences to get them interested.

Listen im not sure Amy Hennig handles some or all of the script writing in The Last of Us, but she's amazing at her job (hence the Uncharted games) and if anyone can pull something off and make it believable it's her. And regardless I think ND is capable of that in general (again look at Uncharted). And I fully believe they achieved that in that scene.

Hey, what was all that talk about the next gen system being talked about at this years e3? This website, ign, probably a few others dropped the ball hard on this one. What are you six? The last of us and god of war, Sony wins? Really?
The only game I knew very little about was Beyond 2 worlds. There not telling me anything until I see actual gameplay footage her moving with your controller, even though he said it was in real time though.
Gee, I wonder who will win, 2 predictable consoles sony, xbox, or nintendo, when the majority of there topics just might be their new console.

Either stop insulting this site and everyone else when you post, or shut it. If you actually read a single solitary word of any given article, NOBODY said Sony or Microsoft would unveil their new machines at this year E3. A few unsubstantiated rumors (mostly for the sake of headlines), but nobody in the industry gave them any real attention.

Halo 4 looks pretty cool, but after Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST and Halo Reach, AND Halo Anniversary, I'm a bit burnt out on Halo. Gears Judgement could be good, but it's not a D1P like Gears 3 was. I'm still loving Dance Central 2, and have barely played it, so DC 3 isn't a big deal to me like DC 2 was. Forza Horizon? Meh. Still playing GT5 and Forza 4. Fable Journey? Will wait for reviews. If reviews are glowing and it turns out to be Kinect's killer app, then yeah, why not?
Xbox Smartglass looks like a cool feature, but I doubt I'd use it often. I feel like it pulls me away from the content, not immerse me more, since I'm flicking between screens. I reckon, like the Kinect, it'll be a huge success in the first 3 months then die off.
Only thing about MS' conference that interested me personally was Nike + Kinect Training! Perfect motivation for blending my 2 passions, gaming and fitness!! And it's far more social and community-based than other Kinect fitness titles. I'll definitely be getting my friends onto that one.
Living in Australia, no one here is interested in ESPN, or Kinect integration of services. Netflix isn't even available in Australia!! More than half the services listed at the 360 conference aren't even available here!!!
In Australia, it's all about the games, the tech and the "WOW" factor. Book of Spells was a bit of a "wow" moment, but while I can see a definite market for families and kids, just doesn't interest me personally. Getting JK Rowling on board was a good move to kick this thing off!!
As far as games go, Sony was the clear winner compared to MS. Am still awaiting Nintendo's Press Conference.
Vita, PS All Stars, Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, God of War Ascension, Assassin's Creed 3, Assassin's Creed 3 Liberation, CoD on Vita, all this stuff makes PS3 the go to machine for my gaming needs!! Nintendo a very close second!!
No Last Guardian or new MGS sadly. I'm glad they held off from announcing new consoles, there's still so much love in the PS3 to tap!! Shame 360 had to hit it's peak so early.

come on $ony you have teased us like little school girls, and this is all you show us!?
come on i was expecting a trailer at least 3 times that length!
$ony had BY FAR the weakest conference this year!
spent WAY too much time beating the chest and whipping the ruler out.........
if theres 1 company in the industry that is so up themselves its $ony!
than the time they did not spend beating it out, they wasted on that crappy book game!
yeah that is totally why i have sunk thousands into playstation products, so i can play a crappy wii wannabe!
guess i should not be surprised they only had 1 new game, everything else we pretty much knew was coming and even that was a bit of a disappointment!
i really wanted to see it take off from the kara tech demo!
where are the games sucker punch, GG, insomniac, the other ND team, ect, ect?
come on $ony you cant turn up to E3 with such few content!
they spent more time showing those crappy book games then they did their biggest franchises!
plus where the hell were the vita titles?
no soul sacrifice, no killzone, no sly 4, no LBP.
not to mention they did not have a gameplay trailer for the biggest 2 vita games, AC and COD!
been announced for 18 months now and we STILL dont have a single gameplay trailer for either!
not to mention what happened to the plus upgrade?
typical $ony, ross was on twitter last week hyping it up like the second coming!
again $ony hype a announcement up like the second coming and than just release the smallest crappiest thing they can!
gotta love the north america part too!
sigh $ony gives EU the finger YET AGAIN!
we pay MORE, wait LONGER, and we STILL get given the finger!
so disappointed, this has to be THE WEAKEST E3 conference in the history of E3!
hell, the history of press conferences!

I was also really surprised by the lack of a price drop for Vita/PS3 and the complete lack of game reveals for the Vita. A CoD and AC isn't going to do it for me.

Also, what about the report of Gaikai service coming to PS3 (and why not PSV) for at least PS2 games?
Finally, did they reveal any dates for Beyond and The Last of Us?
Oh well, here's hoping for more surprises throughout E3 and if not the Tokyo Game Show!

I guess I was disappointed that they had very few things we didn't expect and also seemed to be missing things we would liked to have seen (more new Vita stuff).
I also cringed when the announcer joked about being able to keep the wonderbook thing a secret (unlike the Vita last year) so it could be the big reveal. It took probably fifteen minutes out of the hour and a half presentation, but it felt quite a bit longer and didn't seem to work that well. I sort of wish they had kept it a secret quite a bit longer.
I also don't see how you can declare a winner before Nintendo gets their chance. I realize that many of us don't like to consider them the competition, but I bet that Sony does. Without Sony or Microsoft announcing anyting next-gen, I think it sets up pretty nicely for Nintendo to have a big show.

halo, gears, forza, fable, tomb raider, splinter cell, black ops 2, all the awesome XBLA games, make a bad show?
had allot more games, and allot better games than $onys did!
it may not of been the best conference they have had, but everything they showed there bar the stupid silly music and movie crap was freaking awesome!

Sony will be getting tomb raider splinter cell and black ops, so they didn't have way more and way better games. If you like Halo, gears and forza more thats cool. But Microsoft really only has those three IPs that they can rely on, where as sony has dozens of awesome IPs.

WHOLE point of E3 is showing games, and M$ showed more games AND better ones!
$ony showed 6 games most people will get excited about.
beyond, the last of us, AC3, ACL, FC3, and GOWA.
they did not even show off sly 4!
WTF!?
there was a MASSIVE reaction at E3 last year when it was announced!
why was it not there?
dust 514 is one of the most innovative MMOFPS games out there when it releases its going to be MASSIVE!
so why wasent that there?
M$ showed COD BO2, splinter cell 6, resident evil 6, south park, fifa 13, madden 13, their smart glass tech, fable the journey, halo 4, gears of war liberation, forza horizon, tomb raider, dance central 3, Ascend: New Gods, Lococycle, Presenting I.R.I.S, Matter, and Wreckateer.
thats 18 games most xbox fans will be excited for.
does not take a calculus genius to figure out 18 is a larger number than 6!
not to mention M$ was the ONLY ones who did not waste any time showing boring crap!
EA had some boring disappointing games, ubisoft did, ninty did, $ony did, M$ was the only ones that showed 100% awesome!
worst game they showed was dance central 3 and 2 was a freaking awesome game!
as i said M$ showed MORE, and BETTER games!
what the hell, ill run with your logic too, M$ showed more EXCLUSIVES too!
$ony had that all stars game, ACL, beyond, GOWA, the last of us and thats it!
sorry that crappy book game does not count were talking about games 99% of fans will want, not 1%!
M$ had halo 4, gears of war liberation, forza horizon, Ascend: New Gods, Lococycle, Presenting I.R.I.S, Matter, Wreckateer.
thats 5 exclusives from $ony, versus 8.
yeah, you were saying?

I'm well aware that 6 is a smaller number than 18, thanks for showing that you are a hostile rage filled internet punk, that uses the power of online anonymity to harass people ;)
You had a really awesome time watching usher dance...right that was just filler dude. They showed more games, better is subjective but the "better" games your listing are multiplat so who cares?
I don't care if Xbox wants to show a bunch of garbage looking xbla games, Ascend looks like a trash God of war rip off, lococycle what did that trailer do, just showed a bike again pointless filler because they think quantity = quality. Wrekateer is another garbage looking kinect game. The gears trailer was short and pointless, as were most of microsofts trailers. Halo 4 was the only good demo and honestly I think master chief has had his run, probably why bungie didn't want to make any more.
Msoft has four real exlusives and they are all getting tired and old, not to mention fable kinect looks laughably bad.
Also lol at smart glass tech.
See I can have the same condescending tone as you ;) So what I am saying is yeah Sony had a better show. If I want to watch Usher dance I'll throw on much music.

2009's E3 for it's amount of top, top exclusives (GOW3, UC2 & Heavy Rain), & 2010's for it's presentation; the opening sequence went really well with the music, and overall I found it enjoyable to watch. Guess as a gamer I'd have to say 2009 though.
This year and last year however, have been a bit of a downer. Not saying I expected much from this year - infact, the only thing I WAS looking forward to was The Last Of US. So, I guess I'm happy in that respect. However, the GOW:A gameplay looked same old, same old - which I'll admit isn't a bad thing in the slightest, but...I don't know. Was just expecting something more 'grand'; I killed Cronos - whom is the size of the empire state building - in GOW3, so why should I be impressed by this?
I'm not excited by Beyond just yet, it'll probably click for me abit later (t'was the same with Heavy Rain). Pretty much forgotten the rest of the show - though in fairness, I did watch it half-asleep at 2AM (damn time-zones).
....buuuuuut despite all what I just said, I'm still preoccupied with some of 2011's releases - LBP2 & UC3, mostly - so I'm not hugly intrested in new games. I'll probably be playing these two well into 2013 to be perfectly honest... :P

I'm so stoked that Splinter cell is coming back to the PS3 and returning to its roots. Conviction felt to forced, and the levels felt like levels and not actual locations.
AC3 was obviously awesome as well too. However I think Ubisofts star was Watch dogs, that game looks mighty cool.
However Sony inches ahead for me because of The Last of Us demo. I literally was like Holy F!@% at the end when the guy says no DONT, and then BLAM!!!! Seriously it was awesome.

Blacklist looks nothing like the older Splinter Cell games. For about the first minute of the game I seriously thought it was some CoD trailer about the Afghanistan section. It wasn't till he put on the goggle I was like, "Wait a second..." At which point I watch with sadness as Sam Fisher ran through a camp gunning down everyone and calling in an airstrike.

I will admit I miss the old Splinter Cell games, but Conviction to me was really really trashy. Like I said the levels felt like levels, not actual locations. This game looked more organic to me.
Just because it has a middle east section doesn't mean its all going to take place there. It just looked much better than conviction and like it was trying to return to sams roots a little.

Sony & Nintendo got the handheld integration move in right direction. games on Ps3 smh..... incredible. it makes me think what more could we see of Ps3 if multi plat developers spent more time on Ps3 architecture. if it wasnt for Xbox live microsoft wouldnt have a heartbeat. I wanted to know more of GtA5, Rockstar run on own schedule though. overall Ps3 some serious & its applying pressure hope the competition can bench press.

Seems Nintendo and Microsoft kept it safe as MS had Halo 4 and a new gears game and Nintendo has a new Mario game and they teased the WiiU but there was NO price or launch date. Holiday 2012 could mean on Black Friday or right before Christmas!
Also is the system gonna be $250 or will it be more?
With my PS3 I don't have to worry about hardware cost I just have to pick up games!
