E3 2012: Ubisoft's Watch Dogs Unveiled

In addition to Ubisoft making some waves at Sony's E3 press conference with Assassin's Creed: Liberation for the Vita, the French publisher had other big news:

It's the unveiling of a brand new IP, Watch Dogs, which is slated to arrive for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC...sometime in the future. The buzz is that this new project might actually become a next-gen title.

In development at Ubisoft Montreal, Watch Dogs features a story emphasis on cyber-crime and hacking; it's a futuristic setting where a central operating system run by private companies is going haywire. The gameplay clip (watch it below) includes protagonist Aiden Pierce, who is a master hacker and capable of dealing with just about any electronic obstacle. Towards the end of the demo, though, there's the obvious hint that other players are involved in the adventure in a multiplayer element, which remains a little hazy for now.

Said creative director Jonathan Morin:

"Watch Dogs goes beyond the limits of today's open-world games by giving players the ability to control an entire city. In Watch Dogs, anything connected to the city's Central Operating System becomes a weapon. By pushing the boundaries, we can provide players with action and access to information on a scale that's never been seen in a video game before."

This looks really interesting too. Thank goodness it's in third person perspective, else I won't be able to play it.

Hmmm it could be cool but I'm not much for macromanagement (see: FFXIII battle system).

I love those wind effects in the city though.

I'm aware of both. I'm just reiterating Ben's article mentioning a release on future consoles.

On G4 's coverage they clarified at the end that the demo was being run on a high end PC but that it was coming out for this generation.

I can't wait for it to be released as it looked really interesting and I am not talking about the graphics I meant the gameplay options that could be available.

I believe this to be the best of E3 atm, alongside Last of Us.

Has anyone heard about this before the Ubisoft Conference?

Wow, wow, wow. This looks INSANELY good. Look at that environment! The city is *brimming* with life!

And the story, the setting, the tasks, the freedom, the entire concept... Oh man, it's so right up my alley it hurts. It looks like a game I could *live* in for months.

UBISoft has really understood a thing or two about what makes gaming great. Assassins Creed, Far Cry, Deus Ex... Indeed they hold some of the brightest minds in the business.

Ahhh it was *Eidos* Montreal that made Deus Ex, of course it was. I mixed up. Those frenchmen sure know how to make games too then. Seems there are a lot of bright minds all across this business. :)

Best new IP of all of E3 (except for the Last of Us). And it easily stands up there with some of the big name games they showed off.
