PS3 News: Sony Announces PlayStation Eye - PS3 News

Sony Announces PlayStation Eye

The EyeToy didn't exactly catch on amongst avid gamers, and probably wasn't the smash success Sony wanted it to be. However, it did manage to open our eyes to a whole new world of interactive gaming, and they're not about to drop the little unit from their repertoire just yet. In fact, they've given it a makeover and dropped the "toy" from the title; we give you, the PlayStation Eye.

Sony Computer Entertainment made the announcement this morning, and we learn a few things about the revamped little tool. It still doesn't have HD capacity, but they've increased the resolution capability to 640 x 480 at 60 frames per second, or 320 x 240 at 120 frames per second. Sony has also included a built-in microphone for when the unit releases this summer.

To kick things off, the camera will be bundled with the EyeCreate editing software that will let you edit video, photos and audio clips and save them to the hard drive. You can really get into the process, too, as new features like slow-motion and time lapse will be available. This sweet new toy (oops, we forgot...no "toy") should be an intriguing add-on for the PS3, but we don't yet know how much it will cost, and the only release date offered is "this summer." But when more details come to light, we'll be sure to let you know.
