Lollipop Chainsaw's "4 Hour" Length Is A Definite Exaggeration

Okay, you may have heard the unfortunate news that Grasshopper Manufacture's latest, Lollipop Chainsaw, is only four hours in length.

As soon as I saw the headline, I was 99% sure it was crap. That certainty arose from two very distinct reasons, and they should be conveyed to the gaming public for the purpose of clarification and, let's face it, reality. Reality is good.

Firstly, the media has a history of saying games are a lot shorter than they really are. I still remember when everyone was saying Heavenly Sword was only five hours long. Later, after spending more than double that amount of time with the game (and no, I didn't replay it; I didn't even replay any stages), I wondered where the number "5" came from. Then I started to notice that it was happening constantly. If a game was really 7-8 hours for normal gamers who play at a normal pace, you'll see some headline somewhere saying the game is only 4 or 5 hours. And of course, that kicks off a lot of backlash.

It doesn't help that critics often have to speed through a game in order to get the review done, thereby skewing the number in question. Personally, I hate doing that and in most cases, I flat-out refuse. Now, the second reason I say the 4-hour news isn't accurate is simply due to personal experience: I won't give away too much, but let's just say that after a solid three hours of play, I'm only on Stage 3 and I have three of the five major bosses remaining. Now unless I can magically take 'em all out in an hour or less - and that seems exceedingly unlikely right now - then once again, the reported length is a gross exaggeration.

I've been known to play slower than most, but I am not going through Lollipop slow. I think I've only died twice and I'm not running around looking for stuff or replaying parts. Oh, and please bear in mind that this article in no way hints at the quality of the title. I'm merely saying you shouldn't believe the 4-hour statement, even if it's feasible that someone could beat the game in that span of time. And be wary of headlines and even critics who give you hour lengths and estimations.

I'm not leery of this title due to its purported length, or rumors regarding its gameplay. I'm just concerned about the content. I've never been one to jump on the objectification of women in video games arguments, but this one seems like it might end up pushing those buttons a little bit. Plus, Suda 51's stuff is always a little weird to me. I'm eagerly looking forward to your review, Ben!

I remember the same thing happened with the Uncharted games (namely the third one). people were freaking out that it was 6-8, but my play through was closer to 10-12 hours in length. You make a good point about critics who are reviewing the game often play through it at a much quicker pace. I don't know if they realize that or not, but to say the game is "______ hours" in length just because they beat it in that amount of time doesn't represent the actual length for someone not trying to meet a deadline.

This game shipped to my house as of yesterday. Weather or not it really is 4-5 hours long doesn't matter to me. It's a unique experience and that's why I love video games. I've heard this BS from critics before, but usually ends up being nonsense. I'll take your word on the length of the game, Ben. I'll take the word of someone who interacts with their sites community over some "critic tool" that doesn't give a rats ass about interacting with the members of their site.

And I thought Homefront was short but this topics always reminds me Celebrity Deathmatch for PS2 ,a game i finish all in 1 1/2 hour.

Don't really care for game length as long as it is fun and enjoyable. Can't wait to get home and play.

I don't know, I certainly would not feel happy playing a game which does not offer at least 10 hours gameplay for the story mode. I certainly wouldn't pay full price for such a title.

Then you're going to miss out on some of the generation's best experiences.

You're defining this as one of the best experiences this gen... So be it :P

Even Uncharted would clock around 10-15 hours along with Dead Space, Assassins Creed and many other action styled games this gen.

When you get games like Asura's Wrath, I just cannot justify the price, sure the content will be packed with intensity but when you complete the game in a day you feel slightly disappointed. I had that with Resistance 3 - Mind you I found the game to be a disappointment over all not just the length.

hmm. It's got a metascore of 69 after 9 critical reviews. It's certainly not tracking like one of this gen's best experiences on metacritic yet. To be fair I did see where it scored 9's in Famitsu. Maybe it's metascore will increase but it looks like it will end up in the 7-8 range. I will reserve judgement until I play it.

I didn't say this was one of the best experiences this generation. It isn't, and I wouldn't say it is.

I was talking about other games that come in at under 10 hours that are pretty darn fantastic.

Where is the UPS man!!! I don't care how long the game is, it looks fun. I understand where the article is coming from, but to be honest it'll only help spread the rumor around that the game is 4 hours long. It doesn't really deter folks from thinking otherwise. Not saying the regulars here don't read the articles just saying the passerby's probably won't and will still have in mind it's short. We'll see. Playing Gravity Rush in the meantime.

I know it seems like every campaign mode is getting shorter and shorter this generation, but 4 Hours does seem pretty exaggerated, that's for sure. Even the MP heavy games have longer campaigns then that, and they for the most part don't really care about how good of a job they do on the SP...

But for a game that focuses on SP only? The campaign obviously needs to be a bit longer, or make the game a PSN title.

This game does sound unique though, Not sure yet if I'll be checking it out, but it is nice to see someone still making a game, for the mere fact that it is just that, a game.

Getting this on Friday. Least it gives me a few days to get to grips with Dragons Dogma.

Although not finding much time to play at the minute with the European Football being on (soccer to you guys across the pond). Glad its on to be honest , then it's the Olympics, with Wimbledon thrown in somewhere and then not long before were back August/Spetember then and footy season starts again.

Anyhow back to the game, really looking forward to this game. I love zombie stuff.

I don't know... maybe whomever said 4 hours was playing on the LC equivalent of DMC/Bayonetta's Easy Automatic or NGIII's Hero mode (if it exists...), while skipping cutscenes, and stocking up on Holy Water/Golden Flutes for bosses... lol.

I won't lie, I'll probably beat Lollipop Chainsaw the same day I get it, but it sure as hell won't be 4 hours.

I wouldn't believe it for a second, considering how many times I've seen critics come out and say "this is a short game". There's already been a couple of examples listed by folks above, but I'd like to add Ghost Recon: Future Soldier to the list. The number of times I've read that it's short and can be beaten in six hours or less... BS. It took me well over double that.

More often I'm finding the practice of offering estimation of length ridiculous. I mean, it may sometimes help to determine a purchase decision, but who does it really help in the long run? If a game is really good you'll be likely to replay it, and that's made all the more likely if it's short as that simply means that you'll be able to get through it quickly, rather than abandoning it halfway through if another game comes along.

Okay, I may be a bit off-base with that statement because I only play one game at a time, but you get my drift, I'm sure.

If its a great game and someone doesnt want a short game and is leery, just wait a bit, no doubt the price will drop, they always do : )

No, it doesn't. The word "exaggerate" simply means to embellish one way or the other. :)

It s Probaly the same guys ( maybe it was just one ) that played resident evil 6 in all videos i saw .

Rushing all over the place , never taking the time to look at the environment and ignore all enemies he can .

I don t think there is much people really taking the time to enjoy a game since i always end up taking about 50 % more time to finish a game .

Kingdom of amalur was a good example of this
