Journey May Be The Front-Runner For Game Of The Year

Could - or should - a downloadable title win Game of the Year?

That may be a difficult question to answer for gaming websites and sources come the end of 2012, as it appears Thatgamecompany's Journey will be in the running for the year's highest award.

Right now, the artistic and innovative gem holds a slight lead at GameRankings for the highest rated game of the year, coming in at 92.26%, just ahead of Mass Effect 3's 92.12%. At Metacritic, it's ME3 with the slight lead; 93-92. But beyond the scores, let's break things down for a minute: The gamer outcry against ME3 was well documented and could very well hurt BioWare's epic RPG when it comes time to vote for Game of the Year. Furthermore, we're already halfway through the year, and the only other legitimate contenders are Max Payne 3, Xenoblade Chronicles, and if you want to take a leap, Diablo III (which also had significant, well-known issues).

In looking at the rest of the year, perhaps the biggest contenders have already been confirmed for 2013: Bioshock Infinite and The Last Of Us. And with every passing day, it seems more and more unlikely that Grand Theft Auto V will hit this year. So what's left? Well, Assassin's Creed III appears to have the best shot at the illustrious award in question, or maybe Halo 4 can take the crown. Another title that might have a chance is the hotly anticipated Dishonored, which looks potentially awesome. That one could be this year's Skyrim if everything goes well; the mixing of genres is borderline ingenious, damnit.

Then again, maybe a game like Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Borderlands 2, Lords of Shadows 2, Resident Evil 6, or Hitman: Absolution can take the world by storm... Call of Duty: Black Ops 2? Oh, I suppose. But at this point, it's by no means a stretch to say that Journey could emerge as the finest interactive experience of the year.

Still haven't tried this one. I've had the demo loaded for a few weeks but I just haven't felt like giving it a shot. I think I need to be in the right mood.

As for whether, or not, this game can be a goty? Sure. I don't give a crap. It's not really a "game" though, right? It's like a walk around in a painting sort of thing from what I gather.

Right now my vote goes to VF5: FS!
It's all game and it's purely awesome =)
DOA5 has a shot at it too, which I do have high hopes for.

I don't think you want to even try the demo with this game. Best to just jump right in, you know it's a AAA title.

It's an experience man. I downloaded VF5 cuz it was free, deleted it within 15 minutes.

DOA5 is going to rock but I'm very worried about how much DLC is going to be held back from us. It's going to be baaaad.

Man you deleted VF5?!??!!? It's such a good fighter, I think at least. I love Dead or Alive too, as it does play pretty similarly to VF, but I give VF the edge because of how well it represents the different Martial Arts.

I too am worried with DOA5 having crazy amounts of held back stuff. Dragons Dogma has had a ton which I feared but its nothing I really care about which is good. If they announce multiplayer DLC for it I will however blow up capcom.

Oh, I'll get around to it eventually. I know it's good stuff. Not really my stuff, but I'll try it out to feel an out of body experience that makes me sit up in my leather chair, my legs crossed, while holding a pipe to my mouth and say, "exquisitely thus. this here is a visionary masterpiece of the ages" =)

But I won't before I try the new BABEL RISING demo. That's right. Biblical games. It's got Highlander's name written all over it. I can't wait to punish them sinners!

Anyway, LV so who do you buy your PC's from? I'm too lazy to build one. But I need a workhorse PC that can crank it hardcore in Max.

VF5 is older than 15 years, in fact I think it's nearly 20 years now. I love that after so many years these games still exist unfettered, unpolluted, un-westernized, with pure unadulterated game play bliss that I grew up with.

Xenris, wanna have at it some time on VF5? I'm not the best VF player in the world, or close to it, but the last guy I fought tonight appeared to have rage quitted... hehe ultimate compliment =p

Tem,

I buy all my parts from Newegg and local computer stores. If you're too lazy to actually put one together (come on! it only takes a few hours) I suggest checking out Newegg. There are always great deals on gaming PCs.

Yeah Tem add me up on PSN my PSN is Xenris :) I'm not a pro either, and VF final showdown actually feels much different from the original VF5 so I have to get used to it. I'm not on my PS3 too much lately because I've been busy, but still add me up and we shall throw down!

World,

I can sort of see what you mean. I guess that is why I like it, it feels familiar but it has honestly changed enough over the years to feel fresh for me.

mmmh Longbottom leaf is good ;)

LV, well what I mean is having to track down each individual component and checking for what's compatible with what, order them, and look for each package to arrive at my door. I used to work for a computer store (before they went under) and it was easy because I could get everything there with my discount and just assemble it all at home, and if there was a MB or RAM conflict, or whatever, I could just take a few minutes to swap it out at work. Anyway, I think I'll wait a month before I order it or decide on what I want to do.

Sounds good, Xenris ;)

Journey definitely has my vote. It's easily my favourite game of the year. One of my top 5 of the generation.

Thatgamecompany really did something special with Journey, and it deserves the accolades.

Yes Journey should be up for it, there's never been anything like it and there never will be again. You simply can't overstate how good it is.

I didn't know Lords of Shadow 2 was coming this year, anybody got a date on that?

Journey is my favourite game so far this year because of how it made me feel. There just isn't anything like it.

The last part of the game I was literally in tears but didn't realize it until I put the controller down and watched the credits. I wasn't "crying" more my emotions were just all over the place, with the music and the visuals, man almost every
time I beat that game I feel a weird sense of peace and joy.

Well the Oscars and stuff have different categories for feature and short films but I think that's stupid, if a movie or game is truly the best that year then why does length matter?

Its good, but it's a pity Sony did not snap them up. Not lack of will but lack of money I think, when consider the financial woes of Sony at the minute.

To Sony, "ThatGameCompany", will now be known as "ThatOtherGameCompany"...

Level of agreement: 100%. It kind of baffles me, really, that Vita didn't have nearly all PSN downloadables playable right out of the gate. PSN has some mind-blowingly great content that would be PERFECT for Vita/"transfarring" with PS3.

I think Diablo 3 will be the major harvester of GOTYs this year. I've not played it myself (I don't have a gaming pc), but a large majority of my colleagues at work do and they are raving like crazy about the game. They are even taking days off work to play it (we can do that at our workplace).
I've not experienced the same level of enthusiasm for any other title so far this year (yes, they all got at least one console too).

That might be, I've not really paid attention to that whole debate so I don't have any opinion on the matter. But if this were a horse race I'd still put my money on Diablo 3.

I *hope* it will be Dishonored, though. Cause that means we got one heck of a steam punk game coming up, and that'd be utter awesomeness.

More like disappointment of the year , it s good but nowhere near game of the year .

You have to beat it 3 time so you can get to the good stuff and before getting there the loot are unremarkable ( the ones on the first difficulty are tolerable tho since it s the first playthrough )and even once you re in Inferno they are nothing special beside the occasional lucky drop .

The real money auction house will destroy that game and i even felt like before it was out .

Maybe not all will agree but that s how i felt about it .

I've been waiting forever for Sony to offer some kind of package deal that includes Journey and Flower. Damn you, Sony, take a leaf out of Steam's book and push these amazing games a bit more. Anyway, I don't think I'll be able to procrastinate much longer.

just goes to prove my point earlier on how disappointing this year has been!
i mean not to say that journey is a bad game, its not but its FAR too short!
and come on a PSN game seriously should not be winning GOTY over MP3, ME3, diablo 3, ect, ect!

You really dont get it do you? Journey is supposed to be short. Its not a mistake, or financial, time or effort issue from the dev. You literally need to finish Journey in one sitting.

Its an experience, not a game. Nuff said.

Journey is the most important, most profound game of the generation. Download or not, a game is a game.

It has received some of the biggest praise i have ever seen a game get with multiple sources calling it the greatest game of our time....and i, a hardcore gamer for many years, am finding myself unable to disagree. It's my 6th personal 10/10 scoring game. Absolutely perfect. It gave me an experience like no other, something i hadn't felt the entire generation. It moved me incredibly.

It deserves it and more.

"Fastest selling DLC game ever in both SCEA and SCEE regions."

Just because it sold fast doesn't mean it sold a lot. What does fastest selling mean? Fastest to sell 10 copies? 100 copies in a few days? 1000 copies in a week? Who knows? Sales numbers haven't been released so there's no way of knowing how many it sold.

For some reason I still have doubts over AC3. I know it'll be good but will it really be fresh and progressive enough to stand out as something more than just another AC dressed up with a new theme and setting with the critics?
