Capcom Details Crossover Multiplayer Feature For RE6

Resident Evil 6 could be a global experience, if you so choose.

Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi has given us the lowdown on a feature they're calling "Crossover." It was fully explained during a recent Q&A at the PlayStation Blog, where we learn about how other players can join your adventure in real time and assist in the monster-slaying process.

"The concept of this feature is to have people joining you in real time and seamlessly, so whenever you happen to be at a point where you get to China as Leon, for example, somebody else in the world who’s playing roughly at the same time and they’re also about to get at that point or they’re already there as Jake, he or she will join you. So the idea is more to have a surprise about who’s going to play with you. If want to play with your friends, we recommend, first and foremost, playing with them within the storyline on the co-op, so you’ll be Jake and your friend is Sherry, or you’ll be Leon and your friend is Helena."

There is a setting for only playing with friends and when playing alone, you'll be asked if you want to let live players join your game. If you'd rather tackle everything alone, AI will simply control the other three characters. However, in regards to how your friends will actually enter the game, that will have a lot to do with how many of your PSN buddies are currently playing. As Hirabayashi described it:

"Yes, you have chapters and, if you pick a specific one and tell your friend to play at the same one, you can increase the chances of getting your friend in there. So let’s say both of you only have each other as their only PSN friend and the setting is to play with friends only, then it’s a 100% chance you’ll be playing with each other [laughs].

But let’s say we both are popular and have 100 PSN friends each, and we both choose to play with friends only; there’s still a chance we’re going to play together, but the idea of the design is meant to this kind of scenario. You can manufacture a situation to play with a specific person, but we don’t see it as the main idea behind the Crossover concept. If players want to play with friends, they can do it in Resident Evil 5-style: two friends playing a scenario in co-op."

Resident Evil 6 is slated to arrive in October and it'll be interesting to see how the long-time fans react to this cooperative feature. It's certainly a nice addition but we have to hope the AI is competent, right? We also wonder about varying connection speeds in different regions...sounds like a complicated setup.

This feature doesn't interest me one bit. What about the rest of you? For those that actually enjoyed the co-op play found in RE5 are you wanting this?

I did enjoy RE5. But I only did coop with my sister or my closest friends. Playing with strangers cooperatively doesn't work for me.

I am pretty laid back with games and RE hasn't yet turned so bad that I won't play it. For many, RE is just crap now and I can see where they are coming from. This coop feature seems rather unique so hopefully it turns out well.

My regular coop buddy and I had a great time with RE5. I'm a big fan of coop play but I play exclusively with friends, never strangers.

So this feature here is of no interest whatsoever. We always turn off "public access" in the settings, it's the first thing we do.

Why would you want to destroy your horror experience with such a focus on this stuff? Devs are deluding themselves if they think that this sort of focus doesn't affect the way the single player story mode is laid out. Dead Space 3 is following this pattern too. It's like it's okay I just want a horror experience from these people not a backslapping zombiefest. That's what Dead Island is for.

Well, I'll be digging into Silent Hill Downpour tonight so hopefully that will deliver some of the goods.

It baffles me that with the failure of the Dead Space 2 multiplayer(It was considered a failure by me and friends. Im not sure that idea applies to all of you), hey still pushed for a coop game.

You get it for $20? I'm a few hours into it so far and it's interesting how you're able to use a ton of random things as weapons. Graphics are way better than Homecoming's.

I had to spend 30 but I sold Killzone 3 for $15 so it's all good. I'm gonna play it right after I'm all caught up on today's politics in 15 minutes :)

Lucky, I've got some questions for him to take live.

Downpour is looking pretty good so far, an actual storm brewed up outside while I was playing :) I like how you can peek inside doors before committing on going through. And it feels so weird to be able to walk around and figure things out for myself without having my hand held the whole time. Feels good too.

I love the immersive nature of online co-op:

"Hey, if we both stand in the corner it looks my gun is poking you in the bum."

"Yah hehe it does. Shoot me and see if it does any damage! Nah, it doesn't..."

"Let me throw a grenade! Maybe that will!"

"Oh shit! You idiot!"

"Ah well, back to the last checkpoint..."

"Hey man, Sherry is pretty hot now! I want some of that. Luckily it shows her during this loading screen."

That kind of frivolity took up atleast 95% of my time while playing Resident Evil 5 xD

Haha! Yeah, well, uhm... I do recognize that scenario, yeah. Two coop buddies stumbling around in a game tend to stray off into nonsense now and then. But that's part of the charm too. :)

I'd imagine so, that's how other games handle this feature.
