DLC Fighters "Not The Right Way To Go" For Dead Or Alive 5

Some people didn't like Capcom placing unlockable DLC fighters on the game disc. Team Ninja just thinks extra characters are downright "unfair."

The developer told Videogamer that Capcom's strategy of putting "downloadable" fighters on the disc isn't "the right way to go," and says you won't be seeing such DLC for the hotly anticipated Dead or Alive 5. Here's what Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi had to say on the subject:

"We don't feel that it's right for fighting games. We feel like this is a kind of sport, and you don't change the rules for sports. Everybody plays by the same rules. You don't have a 14-player soccer game versus an 11-player soccer game. That's just not fair.

It's a similar thing to if certain people have all these characters and others don't. It makes it an unfair game, and we don't think that's the right way to go for fighting games."

He added that they have "no plans" to sell characters as downloadable content, and as it's already tough to balance a fighting game, extra characters just makes it all the more difficult. Hayashi said balancing a game with 20 characters is a definite challenge; throwing in more would just be a pain. So what's your take on selling extra fighters as DLC?

That's what the creators of Tekken said about Street Fighter X Tekken ... Then look at the DLC characters in Tekken Tag 2... give it time...

I suppose it's what happens when the higher ups lay down the law for their subordinates.
"Spare me your game philosophies, DLC characters are going in. Deal with it!"

@ultimadream, namco never once said there would be no dlc for street fighter x tekken. They didn't make that game, capcom did. They also never said anything about no dlc for tekken tag 2. They did say that the dlc characters would be free though and that they didn't want to charge for that.

What are you talking about? Namco said they wouldn't charge for fighters. They are talking about Tekken X Street Fighter(Namco's version) NOT Street Fighter X Tekken(Capcom's version).

Might want to do a bit more research before you post your cynicism. Just sayin...

Well in the article that Ultima posted Harada says that paid DLC is not entirely out of the question. The examples that Harada posed were costume DLC, though, not extra fighters.
Additionally, regarding TTT2, Ben wrote "you don't have to expect to pay for extra fighters in TTT2". I'm gonna be half full on this topic.

Hopefully this is the truth. Its ridiculous selling characters in a fighting game. I in general dislike most DLC models, however I have seen it done well, I think in a fighting game, it causes so many balance issues its not funny. Speaking of fighting games, Temjin sometime this week we gotta throw down in VF5....if I can pull myself away from Dragons dogma. I have been having problems with PSN lately it keeps kicking me out but if it gets stable and your on I'll send you a message.

I love the idea of DLC characters... but charging for them, and making & planning before hand for character DLC is BS.

I wonder how many pubs will start taking into account the apparant hold off buyers that seem to be cropping up more and more frequently. Those who wait to buy a game for the sake of the expected "complete" edition that comes just around the corner.
Honestly, I'm that guy at times, too. I plan on getting SF x Tekken but not before I get the whole thing.

Never cared for these fighters. When it came to fighting games I never really strayed away from Street Fighter, or the Marvel Vs. games.

The game is looking brilliant. I will be buying the ANZ edition which gives you access to all four downloadable characters from the start.

So pumped for this but happy to wait with VF5:FS taking up my gaming time at the moment.
