MGS5 To Boast More In The Way Of "Infiltration And Espionage"

"Infiltration and espionage." The cornerstone of the Metal Gear Solid franchise.

And according to what master Hideo Kojima told a French source (as cited by IncGamers), Metal Gear Solid 5 will feature more in the way of both infiltration and espionage.

He also confirmed that the new game is running on the FOX engine and although he was intrigued by the idea of "social interaction" (as seen in last year's Deus Ex: Human Revolution), he didn't say if something like that would be seen in MGS5. Oh, and those of you who are erroneously thinking that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is some sort of blight on the franchise, Kojima reminds you again that it isn't a Solid Snake game "and it was never pitched to the public as a Metal Gear Solid title. It's a spin-off, plain and simple.

Lastly, did you know Kojima wanted to kill off the legendary icon in MGS4? ...that woulda sucked.

Yes. I believes he's metioned this several times in the past. He said all of his staff was against the idea so he eventually gave in.

Thought so. Just didn't want to post spoilers (the comments are full of 'em)

My friend already spoiled Snake's demise for me about a year ago. What a shame. :(

Hopefully, if it's a sequel to MGS4, there will be a new main character other than Snake. But after the way the story went with that game I'm not sure what else could remain for there to be a feasible plot. A prequel would also be pretty cool.

Honestly, I'd love to play as Meryl in the next game. Whoever I play as, though, I hope it follows MGS4 and doesn't go back in time. I want to play/interact with Solid.

Yeah, that's 2 for Meryl!!!!!!

I've constantly said in numerous threads that I wanted a Meryl back-storied game ever since "Rising was announced.

Dial down the melodrama and get a better editor, and I will gladly buy the game. With the way story presentation has progressed this generation, Kojima has some catching up to do. The looooooong cut scenes became a tad abrasive on the second play through.

Oh, thank you for telling me about a feature available in most games. Now that you are being so helpful, was it the left stick to move Snake or am I doing it wrong?

My point was that Kojima's story presentation is clearly obsolete, compared to the advances we have seen this generation. Don't tell me that a hell of a lot of cut scenes weren't badly edited and the some many conversations were much, much longer than they needed to be.

That's kind of what I'm hoping happens moving forward -- New heroes, new villains, etc., and let the Solid Snake story rest. I won't spoil anything here for the three people who may not have finished MGS4 yet but they could EASILY move on without Snake in future installments.

Ooh, I keep forgetting about that. The boss, her unit and her protege winning World War 2 for the allies? That could just be unbelievable. I'd really love it if MGS5 jumped back in forth between that WW2-timeframe and the post Peace Walker/pre-Metal Gear era, to show just how far Big Boss had fallen, from being a hero to a monster over the course of his life. man, I wish I could pitch this story to Konami :)

Nah telly's idea was separate to Jawknee's, and I'd actually like to see another prequel, I preferred MGS3 to the others, just because of the setting. And the boss fights were amazing, who could say they didn't enjoy the End's fight? Epic as.

FOX engine = multiplat

Unless my memory is off Rising was definitely pitched to the public with the name "Metal Gear Solid: Rising". I like how he's distancing himself from it though, just in case things go south.

I think it would be cool to have some limited social interactions in a Metal Gear game just as a tactic for infiltration. I'm a big fan of social engineering.

Metal Gear needs a hero replacement badly. Snake is too old, what is he gonna do kill enemies with a cane?. Sunny and Meryl are perfect. I would love a prequel to the first Metal Gear cast. Psychic mantis, sniper fox, ocelot, meryl, otacon, etc. It probably had the most memorable cast in video game history.

I still don't see where they can go with a Metal Gear Solid 5. Look at what's happening with Rising - before it was set between 2/4 and it looked down to earth and good. Then when it was set after MGS4 the sort direction just went haywire. Fact of the matter is MGS4 is a conclusion, there is nothing more to tell, I don't want any Metal Gear Game to be set after 4 as I think it will flop. Snakes time has finished it is hinted at the end of MGS4 he'll die soon & I like it left at that. Then there is Raiden who also earnt his peace which is now being slaughtered with Risings new direction.

There is not really much they can do with Metal Gear now, a story to tie up MGS3-MG1 (Which Portable Ops & Peace Walker both failed to complete!) or a remake of Metal Gear 1 & 2... There really is nothing left for the series, leave it be.

I strongly suspect that's what MGS5 will be, actually -- the last little blindspot on the big boss/solid snake timeline, after peace walker, leading up to and including the original Metal Gear. Let's be honest, too, a full-on remake of the original NES Metal Gears with current tech would be AWESOME as well.

Still, as I've noted many times, I also hope there is a Metal Gear "Next" with entirely new characters. Maybe it even takes place in the Metal Gear universe but has a different title, a la Prometheus? Just a thought but interesting to think about.

No worries pal, I think it will be set within that time, but I can't help but feel a bit annoyed. Portable Ops and Peace Walker just waste our time with nothing to offer the series - I still question whether Portable Ops is canon.

Can't deny the premise sounds epic though you start playing as Big Boss and then is makes a transition into a remake of Metal Gear with Solid Snake, especially if they actually managed to keep it a secret before release like they did with Raiden in MGS2.

Many people talk about having a new story set within the same universe as Metal Gear I personally would not want that, I would just want Kojima to work on a fresh franchise instead. But I would accept a prequel as long as it is not set post MGS4 I really cannot express how wrong that would be.

I had a friend who always thought Snake died, he went and skipped the credits didn't he! Haha I'd never skip any cutscenes ever, especially in MGS, pffttt!

And to the above who is complaining about Kojima's editing and long cutscenes etc, for me it still stands up there as the masterpiece of this current generation so far in terms of overall story and how MGS4 brings it all together, once you get hooked into the story there is no going back. I can appreciate at times they may feel a touch long, but you really can't say 'Kojima has some catching up to do' in terms of story progression. He's the one who set the benchmark in the first place.

I wish he killed him off. I mean yea one of my fav and for most people too franchises but I would like him to work on a new IPO just like Naughty Dog. Too many publishers relying on same old because it will be a success (ex: E3 2012) but too scared to try new things. At least we got ND. I'm sure next MGS will rock but I'd like to see something new from the Boss.

It's nice to see Kojima still kicking around ideas. He's one of the few creators left in the industry that I trust to deliver a mature story and setting, along with some common sense about what's in good taste and where to draw the lines when it comes to violence and such (i.e. not how Rising is turning out). The latest Revengeance trailer turned me off from that product entirely. As long as Kojima the director, I have full assurance that anything he makes will be a tasteful, quality product.
