Would FFVII's Return To PC Hint At A Return To Consoles?

Sorry. I just had to.

With the news today that Square Enix may intend to re-release the classic Final Fantasy VII for the PC complete with achievements and cloud saves, one has to wonder...

From a financial and resources standpoint, this is probably the easiest thing for the company to do; it isn't a remake and all they're doing is reissuing the same game they produced back in 1998 (it hit the PlayStation in '97). Adding the achievements, cloud saves, and a lame little feature that lets you increase your stats "with the click of a button" isn't complicated. But that's not the question here. The pressing question is- "Why even bother?"

Maybe it's a cost-effective way to further gauge the burning fan desire for an actual remake. Although PS1 classics are not often overhauled due to the sheer amount of time and effort involved, it has happened (and the Oddworld remake is coming, too). We're getting Final Fantasy X HD - which is much appreciated - and that also might serve as another gauge. It just seems bizarre to re-release FFVII for the PC out of the blue, especially when the company's primary focus this generation has been to move away from their JRPG roots.

Yes, it's easy and quick. So maybe they're just viewing this as a fast money-maker. But I'd really like to believe that, logically speaking, this is almost like a trial... And then we can finally talk about the drop-dead-awesome FFVII remake for the PS4!

'cough'

If the bitmaps are high res I'll but it. If they're not... anyone try looking at a 320x240 jpeg on full screen computer monitor? mmmmh, pixel'lish.

A totally odd move I'd say. I'm still sore about holding off of beating my original PSX playthrough of FF7 (held myself back from finishing off Sepheroth) because of the impending SUPERIOR PC release, brought to you by... EIDOS??
Sadly it turned out to be Buggy Fantasy 7 with game breaking glitches.

Somebody released an unofficial high-res patch for the old PC version and it was awesome, it would be really sad if the official SE re-release didn't even look that good.

I still own FFVII for PC and boy is it a terrible port. Why would anyone buy this latest PC port when it's already available in so many other areas?

Options I would assume. I would not mind buying it for PC if it's a stable port.

Do you already own the game? I don't know anyone wanting to play FFVII on their PC that hasn't already.

I don't see why not, I know a lot of people who buy multiple versions for different platforms.

I thought someone laced the water supply with hallucinogenic drugs when I saw Final Fantasy VII trending worldwide on twitter...

Ben, I think you're on to something. I personally believe SE really DID intend at one point to remake FF VII this gen, but FF XIII was such a quagmire they had to spend way more time and effort getting it and it's spinoffs up to par. Could it be that SE realizes they could a) win back every fan they ever lost and b) make TONS of money by just doing it already? Maybe this IS a harbinger of things to come...

I hope this is some kind of test market but I suspect it's just another cash grab. They want the proceeds from their best game to help them out of the hole they've dug, but they don't want to admit that everything about it (except maybe dated graphics) is better than what they are putting out now. Making the remake would be like admitting failure to Wada (who is a failure).

Earth: "Hey Square Enix your new games aren't so great, how about a remake of the greatest game you ever made?"

SE: "Nah, we don't want a billion dollars."

FFVII PC was a mess! I got to the Chocobo races and had it continually lock up. I moved on but really enjoyed the game. I have been holding off buying this off the PSN. I hope they do a remake but not for the PC. Hopefully we haven't heard the whole story yet and it's a multi platform release. SE is such a screwed up company :(

I'm still surprised that til this day no developer has stolen the materia system for their game or try something very similar for gameplay. Its just so perfect to me..

On that note I really dont think a FFVII remake is worth it. Squeenix will screw it up and the way the game is and was is lighting in a bottle

Oh I'm sure they would ruin it somehow, but that doesn't solve the problem of why they don't cash in on the obvious.

If they would just do an HD upgrade to FF VII(for the consoles) they would bring enough money to pay off all debts, fund the next couple of games, and sit pretty for awhile, but I guess not every business is in it for success.

The sad part is how they think it would be a bad thing to update these titles, Wada please just quit already.

Come guys, dont you all get it? Squareenix is in the crap hole. They do want to do a remake of ff7 but they're in a financial bind. Whats better way to make money? Re-release a hit game with minor upgrades. Use that money to finance a FF7 remake. Its obvious... well I hope this is the case.

Their financial bind isn't that bad. They turned it almost completely around in the last fiscal year, in fact.

Not that I would mind, since it's all the fans have been asking for.. Though how about remaking FFV and FFVI first for their 20th anniversary coming up (later this year and in 2014)? You know, have them warm up the classics since not many even know about FFV to begin with and then have them drop the bombshell of FFVII :)

seriously, what has to happen till people will LET IT GO!?
god its really starting to get out of hand!
were NEVER going to get a remake of FFVII so can we please just get over it!?

as for the "new" port, what for?
i really wonder at times who makes these financial decisions at $E.
i mean seriously, is this going to sell enough to really warrant the extra time into it?
wouldent that time be better put into something your fans do want, i dunno how about that versus 13 game that was only announced a short SIX freaking years ago!
sadly looks like its time to realise thats never coming too!
if its not at TGS this year its officially done and dusted!
pushing up daisies.....

How odd. I started playing through FF VII again (just up to the bit in Wall Market...poor Cloud xD), and then this article pops up.

I don't want to hold out for a FF VII remake, I really don't, but if this is SE just testing the waters so to speak, I think it might just make me the happiest person on earth....

But seriously....SE either needs to remake FF VII, or just forget about it completely.

All this hoping and waiting and letdowns is just making my heart hurt =(

If they did finally make a remake, it would prob end up like FFXIII with Cloud in it instead. A rumor was said a while back that SE haven't already tried bc they thought that creating each town, each house (you can enter), and each landmark in 3D perspective would take too long. But now, with games like red dead redemption, skyrim, and fallout, it doesn't seem impossible. Plus, they already have some animations ready if they use the same ones from the Advent Children movie. Kind of like quantic dreams new game that uses CG in-game gameplay. Idk, i think it's possible if they would just do it.
