Would FFVII's Return To PC Hint At A Return To Consoles?
Sorry. I just had to.
With the news today that Square Enix may intend to re-release the classic Final Fantasy VII for the PC complete with achievements and cloud saves, one has to wonder...
From a financial and resources standpoint, this is probably the easiest thing for the company to do; it isn't a remake and all they're doing is reissuing the same game they produced back in 1998 (it hit the PlayStation in '97). Adding the achievements, cloud saves, and a lame little feature that lets you increase your stats "with the click of a button" isn't complicated. But that's not the question here. The pressing question is- "Why even bother?"
Maybe it's a cost-effective way to further gauge the burning fan desire for an actual remake. Although PS1 classics are not often overhauled due to the sheer amount of time and effort involved, it has happened (and the Oddworld remake is coming, too). We're getting Final Fantasy X HD - which is much appreciated - and that also might serve as another gauge. It just seems bizarre to re-release FFVII for the PC out of the blue, especially when the company's primary focus this generation has been to move away from their JRPG roots.
Yes, it's easy and quick. So maybe they're just viewing this as a fast money-maker. But I'd really like to believe that, logically speaking, this is almost like a trial... And then we can finally talk about the drop-dead-awesome FFVII remake for the PS4!

Ben, I think you're on to something. I personally believe SE really DID intend at one point to remake FF VII this gen, but FF XIII was such a quagmire they had to spend way more time and effort getting it and it's spinoffs up to par. Could it be that SE realizes they could a) win back every fan they ever lost and b) make TONS of money by just doing it already? Maybe this IS a harbinger of things to come...

Earth: "Hey Square Enix your new games aren't so great, how about a remake of the greatest game you ever made?"
SE: "Nah, we don't want a billion dollars."

On that note I really dont think a FFVII remake is worth it. Squeenix will screw it up and the way the game is and was is lighting in a bottle

god its really starting to get out of hand!
were NEVER going to get a remake of FFVII so can we please just get over it!?
as for the "new" port, what for?
i really wonder at times who makes these financial decisions at $E.
i mean seriously, is this going to sell enough to really warrant the extra time into it?
wouldent that time be better put into something your fans do want, i dunno how about that versus 13 game that was only announced a short SIX freaking years ago!
sadly looks like its time to realise thats never coming too!
if its not at TGS this year its officially done and dusted!
pushing up daisies.....

I don't want to hold out for a FF VII remake, I really don't, but if this is SE just testing the waters so to speak, I think it might just make me the happiest person on earth....
But seriously....SE either needs to remake FF VII, or just forget about it completely.
All this hoping and waiting and letdowns is just making my heart hurt =(

A totally odd move I'd say. I'm still sore about holding off of beating my original PSX playthrough of FF7 (held myself back from finishing off Sepheroth) because of the impending SUPERIOR PC release, brought to you by... EIDOS??
Sadly it turned out to be Buggy Fantasy 7 with game breaking glitches.
